Resin Jewelry

Resin jewelry is beautiful, customizable in an infinite amount of ways, and easier to make than it seems! We will be using resin, molds, dyes, and small objects to make earrings and pendants. Please note: This is a repeat program. Please do not register if you have attended previously.

Introduction to the Laser Cutter

In this class we will be learning how the laser cutter works, what you can make in it, and how you can design your projects. This is an instructional course and not a craft program, so we will not actually be making anything in the class, but you will learn the skills you need to make your own awesome laser cut creations!

GoT Inspired Dragon Eggs with Deb Jaffe

Bring your inner Khaleesi and learn to make these GoT inspired dragon’s egg boxes.  Use polymer clay, metallic foils, pigments and your own imagination to make your egg uniquely your own. You will uncover the tricks of making a useful hollow “box,” realistic scales, and lizard textures. What will you store in your dragon egg?

Star Wars Can Luminaries

Celebrate your fandom in honor of May the 4th, the official Star Wars holiday!  Learn how to make a lantern out of tin cans, a hammer, and nails.  Several methods can be used to transfer your Star Wars design onto the can.  Your luminary will be complete with a battery powered tea light.  All materials provided.  Open to all in grades 6-12.  Registration is required.  May the Force be with you.  Always.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The WPL TAB is a group of library-loving Teens who meet a few times per year with the Head of Teen Services, Jennifer.  We discuss issues related to teen use of the library, suggest materials to buy, recommend ideas for programs, and help plan the summer reading program.    Of course we spend a lot of time hanging out, laughing, playing games and snacking too!  We are always looking for more teens to share their ideas with us.  Open to all in grades 6-12.  Registration is appreciated.

Cricut Paper Flowers: Make Potted Paperwhites

Suminagashi- Japanese Paper Marbling for Teens

Suminagashi or “floating ink” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful.  It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century.  Learn this ancient art and create your own beautiful paper.  All materials provided.  Open to all in grades 6-12.  Registration is required.

Talking TED

Join librarian Cindy Haiken to watch and discuss a popular TED talk. New discussions are held on the second Thursday of each month. In May, we will watch and discuss Jill Bolte Taylor's "My Stroke of Insight."

Spring Bike Tune-Up
9:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Get your bike in shape for summer! Hopefully all you’ll need is a little air in your tires, but Wallingford resident and bike commuter, Jared Liu, will be on hand to demonstrate simple repairs to empower you to work on your own bike. The workshop will focus on anything needed to get your bike going, and will likely include repairs for: wheels, drivetrain, fit, and cables. 

Drop in on a first-come, first-served basis. Weather permitting, we will meet outside on the sidewalk by the rear entrance. Child and adult bikes welcome.

Bring your project and share inspiration, conversation, and ideas with other handcrafters. This is a drop-in group for adults and teens. Bring your own supplies and a portable task light if you need one. Basic tools and some supplies are available at the Library. 

We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the Collaboratory. No registration necessary.

Open Sew

Do you like to sew? Join people who enjoy quilting and sewing at a casual “drop in” program anytime from 5:00-9:00 p.m. in the Collaboratory the 3rd Wednesday evening of each month. Meet people to share ideas with and get inspired for your next project! Bring your unfinished projects, either hand sewing or machine. There are portable sewing machines (or bring your own) and lots of sewing supplies and tools provided by the library for your use including rotary blades, thread, needles, pins, cutting mats, cutting table, scissors, rulers and more! While you are here you can view the Baby Lock Crown Jewel III long arm quilting machine, the Bernina Artista 200/730 embroidery machine and also the Juki Exceed 600 computerized sewing machine (these machines require a training appointment with a staff member and will also need to be reserved when you want to use them). Stop by for 10 minutes or for the full 4 hours for a fun evening of sharing and learning!

Handmade Sketchbook or Journal Workshop
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Learn how to make a soft cover sketchbook or journal. We will sew the pages through the spine of the book cover to create a decorative exposed sewing. This stitch is called “Longstitch.” You will learn the bookbinding basics, and discover how to use a bone folder and awl.

Kindness Grows With Art: A Collage Workshop
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

In the spirit of playful exploration and mindfulness practice, discover ways to express themes of kindness with imagery. We will explore simple mindful meditation to cultivate creativity. We will experiment with cut and paste collage and simple paints to create a personal piece of art.

Art making is relaxing, contemplative, and nourishes our natural creativity. No experience is necessary to enjoy this workshop, just a willingness to let go and see what emerges!

Instructor Judith Bird is a fine artist, Expressive Arts Educator, and muralist. She teaches workshops and individual session in Expressive Arts and creativity. She assists her students in a process of self-exploration that uses inner imagery, color, symbolism and art, to nurture creativity and promote relaxation.

Quilling: Victorian Paper Filigree

Quilling is a decorative art form going back at least a few hundred years, where all sorts of objects are decorated with intricate designs made using simple tools such as long strips of paper, a toothpick, and a little glue. In this workshop, we'll learn a few basic ways to shape the paper and create a card suitable for gifting.
