Wallingford Reads YA Book Club: It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

All teens and adults are welcome at this book discussion where we discuss Young Adult Literature. Lauren Rumi.  Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk.

Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life, Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does.  That’s when things start to get crazy.  At his new school, Craig realizes that he isn't brilliant compared to the other kids; he’s just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping—until, one night, he nearly kills himself.  Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include people from all walks of life.  There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.   Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness. For a novel about depression, it’s definitely a funny story.

Bring Your Ideas to Life With Arduino
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

In this activity, you will have a hands-on introduction to Arduino programming. Arduino is a very popular microcontroller which is widely used by engineers, hobbyists and even artists. Arduino allows you to obtain signals from sensors (such as buttons, knobs, light sensors) and control physical devices (such as LEDs and motors). Combining this with other modern tech skills (basic circuits, 3D printing, laser-cutting), one can create control systems, fun robots, interactive visual displays, etc. Arduino projects can be as simple as creating blinking patterns for an LED, and as complex as building your own RC drone from scratch.

Instructor José A Riofrío received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Elizabethtown College in 2003, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 2005 and 2008, respectively. At Vanderbilt, José focused his research in controls, mechatronics and mechanical design. From 2008 to 2011, José worked in the Fluid Power industry designing servo-pneumatic control systems for various motion-control applications, such as packaging, automation, and animatronics. In the fall of 2011, José returned to the academic world and became an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at Western New England University, where he taught various courses in solid mechanics, mechatronics, and first-year engineering. In the fall of 2015, José joined the faculty at Quinnipiac University (Hamden, CT) as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Mechanical Engineering, where he also teaches Circuits and Controls.

Wallingford Reads YA Book Club:
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

All teens and adults are welcome at this book discussion where we discuss Young Adult Literature. Jennifer Nash will moderate.  Author Natasha Friend will join us for discussion!  Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk.

For Quinn McAvoy, losing her hair the summer before eighth grade was the beginning of the end.  Suddenly she was Pluto: a has-been planet, too dwarf-like and unimportant to hang with the other celestial bodies.  Quinn gets a second chance when her family moves across the country a week before her freshman year.  No one in Gull’s Head, Massachusetts, know that Quinn has alopecia, the autoimmune disorder that took the hair she never really thought about—until it was gone.  No one knows the wig she’s wearing isn’t her real hair.  All Quinn wants is to blend in with the crowd.  When the popular girls mistake her as one of their own, Quinn plays along, until a boy in a wheelchair, who’s been hurt even more than she has, turns Quinn’s carefully constructed world on its head.

5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Do you like to sew? Join people who enjoy quilting and sewing at a casual “drop in” program anytime from 5:00-9:00 p.m. in the Collaboratory the 3rd Wednesday evening of each month. Meet people to share ideas with and get inspired for your next project! Bring your unfinished projects, either hand sewing or machine. There are portable sewing machines (or bring your own) and lots of sewing supplies and tools provided by the library for your use including rotary blades, thread, needles, pins, cutting mats, cutting table, scissors, rulers and more! While you are here you can view the Baby Lock Crown Jewel III long arm quilting machine, the Bernina Artista 200/730 embroidery machine and also the Juki Exceed 600 computerized sewing machine (these machines require a training appointment with a staff member and will also need to be reserved when you want to use them). Stop by for 10 minutes or for the full 4 hours for a fun evening of sharing and learning!

Babysitting Course for Teens
10:30 AM - 2:30 PM

Many new babysitters face fears when it comes time to begin babysitting.  Will I know how to play with the children?  What happens if they get hurt?  How do I change a diaper?  This four hour class is designed to prepare teens to feel confident when accepting a babysitting job.  It covers topics such as interviewing tips, getting paid, how children play, ages and stages, communicating with children, basic care, changing diapers, and handling emergencies. At the completion of the course, participants will take a brief quiz and certificates of completion will be distributed.
