A Will for the Woods
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

What if our last act could be a gift to the planet? Determined that his final resting place will benefit the earth, musician, psychiatrist, and folk dancer Clark Wang prepares for his own green burial while battling lymphoma. The spirited Clark and his partner Jane, boldly facing his mortality, embrace the planning of a spiritually meaningful funeral and join with a compassionate local cemetarian to use green burial to save a North Carolina woods from being clear-cut.

With poignancy and unexpected humor, “A Will for the Woods” portrays the last days of a multifaceted advocate – and one community's role in the genesis of a revolutionary movement. As the film follows Clark's dream of leaving a legacy in harmony with timeless cycles, environmentalism takes on a profound intimacy.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

On December 30th, 2003, Joan Didion and her husband John Gregory Dunne had sat down to dinner at home after spending the day with their daughter Quintana, who was in the hospital struggling with pneumonia and septic shock, when Dunne suffered a massive heart attack and died. The Year of Magical Thinking, which won the National Book Award for nonfiction in 2005, is Didion's memoir of the year that followed Dunne's death. A portrait of a 40-year marriage, Didion's book is a lyrical and haunting story of grief.

The Long and Fascinating History of Toilets
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Contrary to popular belief, Thomas Crapper did not invent the toilet. But who did? Better yet, when did people first start using toilets? And were they anything like the toilets we know today?

Presenter Kimberly Worsham will explore the long and fascinating history of toilets, from ancient Mesopotamia to today. We will walk through the not-so-short history and learn things like: why we should be grateful for Queen Elizabeth I, how toilets have been useful in wars, and the best reasons to visit Japan and Malaysia.

We will also learn about how even in current times, toilets are not as common as we often think they are, why that is, and what is being done about it - from Cambodia to San Francisco. Of course, we will also tastefully touch on how you can better your toilet experience in your own home and on the road. The class will be partly interactive, so bring all of your most curious questions and taboo tales.

Kimberly Worsham is a water & sanitation (WASH) specialist in the development industry. She is currently Manager of Monitoring and Evaluation for Safe Water Network. She discovered a passion for toilets early as a child who always needed to inspect restaraunt facilities, but was reminded of that love while consulting in India, and has continued her love by working on it in Australia and Cambodia. She's also a board member for the water organization NYC H2O. In different lives, she has worked in local government, corporate marketing, and even taught math in Rwanda. She received her MPA and B.Sc in business at NYU, and a Masters in Integrated Water Management from the University of Queensland as an International WaterCentre Scholar.

Join us to celebrate our 137th year! After refreshments and a brief business meeting, we will enjoy a performance by Jennifer Munro, an award-winning storyteller whose sense of humor permeates every story she tells. Jennie has been telling stories since 1987. However, the real adventure began when she started creating her own stories. Some of her stories are based on the unusual characters in her life, others are myths and fairy tales informed by personal experience, while others are old stories disguised in modern garb. No matter the source, Jennie's stories are witty, uplifting, and often poignant original stories that explore the triumphs and foibles of the human condition.

All are welcome!

Mystery Book Group: Let's Kill All the Lawyers
3:00 PM - 4:15 PM

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" is one of the few memorable lines from Shakespeare's Henry the Sixth, Part 2, uttered by Dick the butcher, a character no one remembers. In this series, we won't kill any lawyers, but we'll meet a few of them who act as detectives in some highly regarded series.

This month: Open and Shut [2002] by David Rosenfelt
Whether dueling with new forensics or the local old boys' network, irreverent defense attorney Andy Carpenter always leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plan. But Andy prefers the company of his best friend, Tara, to the people he encounters in the courtroom. Tara, a golden retriever, is clearly smarter than half the lawyers who clog the courts of Passaic County. However, just as it seems Andy has everything figured out, his dad, New Jersey's legendary ex-D.A., drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a fortune of $22 million that Andy never knew existed . . . and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall. Struggling to serve justice and bring honor to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons-and an astonishing family secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for good.

Women in American History: Amelia Earhart
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

In this series presented by Mark Albertson, four pioneering women will be featured for their contributions to America in the 19th and 20th centuries. These women made their marks in a variety of venues: political, social, racial, human and civil rights, literature, and aviation. Each woman, in her own way, advanced not only the course of women, but society itself. This series will highlight the lives and achievements of these four extraordinary women.

Noevmber:  Amelia Earhart
An intriguing aspect of the Amelia Earhart story is that there is no closure; speculation as to her exact fate persists to the present day.  Amelia Earhart helped blaze a trail in aviation for women.  She was a vehement proponent of Women’s Rights who informed her betrothed, publisher George Palmer Putnam, on their wedding day that she would not be constricted to medieval conventions pertaining to marriage.  Amelia Earhart and other female aviators of the period served as inspirations for those intrepid women who crossed the Atlantic in World War II, delivering aircraft to the Allied air forces in the European Theater of War.

December: Eleanor Roosevelt
The quintessential American liberal, Eleanor Roosevelt transformed the Office of First Lady.  She was the first First Lady to address a presidential convention; she gave 348 press conferences during her 12 years in office; she published more than 60 feature articles in the nation’s leading periodicals; she wrote a daily newspaper column, “My Day,” from 1936 to 1962; she was a significant reason the Black Constituency shifted from the Republican to the Democratic Party; and she co-authored the United Nations’ Declaration on Human Rights.  Harry Truman would later observe that Eleanor Roosevelt was not only First Lady of America, but of the world.

This month: The Lincoln Lawyer [2005] by Michael Connelly
Representing some unsavory characters in his work as a defense lawyer, Mickey Haller takes on his first high-paying and possibly innocent client in years, but finds the case complicated by events that suggest a particularly evil perpetrator.

This Book Club is moderated by Carole Shmurak, author of 11 books and Professor Emerita at Central Connecticut State University.
