Wallingford Reads YA: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

All teens and adults welcome at this book discussion where we discuss Young Adult Literature. Lauren Rumi moderates.  Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk.

In the not-so-distant future, life on Earth is ugly.  The science fiction novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline takes place in the midst of a major energy crisis and catastrophic global warming- just for starters.  Thank goodness for OASIS- a giant online virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be.  Protagonist Wade Watts, like most of the population, escapes daily into OASIS in search of the key to the fortune left by its creator, James Halliday.  Locked in hidden puzzles within the virtual playground, Halliday leads the world on a hunt, 1980's style.  "Ready Player One" is now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

The Military History of the Vietnam War
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This program is part of the One Book, One Wallingford series.

Professor Ben Kiernan, PhD, the A. Whitney Griswold Professor of History, Professor of International and Area Studies at Yale University, and author of Viêt Nam: A History from Earliest Times to the Present (Oxford University Press, 2017) will discuss the military history of the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War from 1954 to 1975 was in fact three wars: the guerrilla war in the lowland villages of the Mekong delta and coastal plain of South Vietnam, a largely conventional war in the hills and forests of the Central Highlands, and an air war fought mostly over North Vietnam and Laos. The combination of all three theaters turned a civil war in the South into a major international conflagration.

Mystery Book Group: Native American Sleuths
3:00 PM - 4:15 PM

When author Tony Hillerman submitted his first manuscript to an agent, he was told, "It's a good mystery, but lose that Indian stuff." Fortunately, he didn't listen. The Leaphorn/Chee series ran from 1970-2006, comprising 18 books; his daughter Anne is now continuing the series. In addition to the Hillermans, we'll read three other authors whose detectives are Native Americans in upstate New York, Minnesota, and Wyoming.

This month: Dance for the Dead [1996] by Thomas Perry
Native American guide Jane Whitefield takes on two clients--Timmy, the young heir to a fortune, whose adoptive family is murdered, and Mary Perkins, accused of stealing millions from S&L banks--whose cases become strangely intertwined.

Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk. This Book Club is moderated by Carole Shmurak, author of 11 books and Professor Emerita at Central Connecticut State University.

The Reason You're Alive by Matthew Quick

68-year old Vietnam vet David Granger is a right-wing, steak-loving heavy smoker with a home arsenal of guns, a liberal son and an adored seven-year-old granddaughter. He dresses in camouflage, is loudly and repeatedly profane and goes on rants about the government. But when his surgery for a recently-diagnosed brain tumor triggers memories of his poor treatment of a fellow solider during the war, Granger is determined to right this wrong. New York Times bestselling author Matthew Quick's timely new novel is a compassionate story of a complex man trying to find his way in a divided America.

World War One Digitization Day
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Stories, photos, letters, documents, and souvenirs help bring the story of World War One back to life. In an effort to help preserve these memories and this significant part of our history, Wallingford Public Library will be partnering with the Connecticut State Library to hold a WWI Digitization Day. Wallingford area residents and their family, friends, and neighbors are asked to find their WWI related items and stories that might be tucked away in drawers or trunks so they can be included in this important archive.

Connecticut State Library’s Remembering World War One Digitization Days, funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, give Connecticut residents an opportunity to have their WWI photos, letters, keepsakes, and stories preserved for future generations. During these events, State Library staff record the stories and digitize the photos, letters, medals, keepsakes, or objects saved by the men and women who served over here and over there. Their stories and digital images are then made freely available online and will be preserved in the Connecticut Digital Archive so that their efforts and sacrifices are never forgotten.

For more information about this event, visit ctinworldwar1.org/digitization-days.

The Remembering World War One Digitization Day has been made possible in part by the Connecticut State Library and a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor.

Created in 1965 as an independent federal agency, the National Endowment for the Humanities supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation. Additional information about the National Endowment for the Humanities and its grant programs is available at www.neh.gov.

This month: Thunder Bay [2007] by William Kent Krueger
Leaving behind a stressful law enforcement career in the hopes of becoming a private investigator in his small Minnesota hometown, Cork O'Connor is asked by an Ojibwe healer to help him find the son the man fathered years earlier, a case that culminates in an attempt on the Ojibwe's life.

Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk. This Book Club is moderated by Carole Shmurak, author of 11 books and Professor Emerita at Central Connecticut State University.

Revitalizing Public Health Nutrition: Strategies for the Future
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Food insecurity is the inability to consistently access or afford adequate food.

Food insecurity is prevalent problem across many communities in the United States. It impacts a student’s ability to learn in the classroom, a parent or grandparent’s capacity to provide the essentials for their family, and the overall health of a community. Why then, do we find that participation rates in low income nutrition programs are declining, despite the need for this aid?

Professor Michael Puglisi, PhD, RD, assistant extension professor in UConn's Department of Nutritional Sciences, will talk about the way nutrition guidelines and education have evolved over generations. Together we’ll explore the new initiatives that show potential for shaping the future of nutritional assistance programs, including strategies that target nutritional education, mindful eating, and stress reduction.

This program is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), UConn, and the Wallingford Public Library.

This month: The Girl with Braided Hair [2007] by Margaret Coel
Thirty years after Liz Plenty Horses goes into hiding following accusations of betraying the militant American Indian Movement to the FBI, Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley investigate when the skeleton of a murder victim turns up on the Wind River Reservation.

Where's Your Walden? Using Thoreau's Technique for Enhancing Your Own Local Refuge in Nature
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This program is part of the Gray-Wulff Environmental Series.

Where do you go to "re-create"  yourself?

For many people, it's a an ordinary but beautiful place in nature where we find temporary refuge from human society. Typically it’s a local park or land trust -- a landscape of rock, water, sky, and woods inhabited by plants and animals living free from human affairs. Henry David Thoreau found his refuge at Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts, where he overnighted for two years between July 1845 and September 1847. The result was Walden, the literary fountainhead of America’s environmental consciousness, visited more than half a million times each year.

When writing the first-ever, The Guide to Walden Pond (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018), author Robert Thorson learned how Thoreau enhanced and deepened his sense of place. His technique was to keep it local and to merge history, landscape, nature, and literature into a single aesthetic.

During his talk, Professor Thorson will bridge Thoreau’s technique with his own own and help you find yours.  After the talk, there will be time for questions and discussion, followed by a book sale and signing.

Robert Thorson is Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut.

This month: Spider Woman's Daughter [2013] by Anne Hillerman
When one of her colleagues is gunned down, Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette Manality helps her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, find the shooter and discovers a link to a cold case involving Jim's former partner, Joe Leaphorn.
