In celebration of Black History Month, we are proudly hosting a special panel discussion “Shaping the Future – Together”.

This program is presented by the Congress of Black Women of Canada, Oshawa/Whitby and Ajax/Pickering Chapter, Welcome Centre Immigrant Services, Cultural Expressions Art Gallery Inc., and the Whitby Public Library.

Registration is required and open to 16 years and older.

Numbers, Rhymes and Storytimes at Central
9:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Numbers, Rhymes and Storytimes is a half hour program for children aged three and four that helps to expand language, number familiarity and encourage school readiness.

It is held on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. beginning January 14 and runs for six weeks until February 25 (there is no session on Febrauary 18 because of the Family Day holiday.) 

Registration begins on Wednesday, January 9 at 10:00 a.m. Register online, in person or by calling 905-668-6531 ext. 2010.

The child must be the required age before the program starts.

Due to space limitations, a child may register in only one English storytime.

Toddler Time at Central
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

Toddler Time is for children aged 19-35 months and their caregivers. It is designed to enhance language development through stories, songs and movement in an engaging familiar setting. 

It is held on Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m. beginning January 14 and runs for six weeks until February 25 (there isn't a session on February 18 because of the Family Day holiday.)

Registration begins on Wednesday, January 9 at 10:00 a.m. Register online, in person or by calling 905-668-6531 ext. 2010.

The child must be the required age before the program starts.

Chess Night at Central

All ages and skill levels are welcome. Improve your skills, have fun and meet other local chess enthusiasts.  Join members of Durham Chess for an evening of casual play.  Choose from two time controls: one 40/40 min game or two 20/20 min games. Meet in the Local History room on the second floor.

Monday is Murder at Central

Are you a fan of mysteries? Do you like your mysteries hard boiled? Cozy? Thriller?

Personally, I like mine with a cup of tea and the murder off stage.

Why don’t you join us once a month when we can share a pot of tea and some suggestions of new titles, and a few old ones, that you may want to try.

We are meeting the fourth Monday this month because of the Family Day holiday on the 18.

English Reading Buddies at Central

This program pairs children (Grades 1-3) who would benefit from additional reading support with a high school volunteer.

English Reading Buddies meet for an hour each week to read stories and play literacy-based games. This 7 week program is offered at the Central Library on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. starting February 5/6, 2019 and ending the week of March 26/ 27, with one week off at March Break.

The Central Library's Teen Café is a safe space where youth in grades 7 to 12 can hang out, create, play and do homework. Snacks will be provided. This program is hosted by the Central Library’s Teen Advisory Group. No registration required, just drop in.

Family Storytime at Central

Families listen to stories and sing songs together in a playful environment.

It is held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30–7:00 p.m. from January 16 until May 29.

Children meet weekly on a one-to-one basis with a teen volunteer to practice their French reading and also play literacy-based games. This 7 week program begins February 7th, 2019 and ends March 28th with one week off at March Break.

At Central:  Two 40 minute sessions every Thursday Session A  4:00-4:40pm and Session B  4:50-5:30pm.  You may only register your child for one session.

English Conversation Circle at Central

Do you want to practice your English language skills? We can help! Conversation Circles give Newcomers an opportunity to practice their English conversation skills in a welcoming environment and to learn about Canadian culture, with the help of volunteers from the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD).  Participants from all over the world, with a variety of language abilities, come together to discuss topics, have questions answered, share stories, learn about library resources, and so much more!

3D Printer Orientation at Central

Learn the basics of 3d printing, including how to prepare a 3D design file for printing, as well as how to properly and safely use the 3D printer to print your own 3D object. Patrons must attend an orientation workshop before using the 3D printer.
 
To get the most out of this workshop, registrants should already be comfortable with basic computer functions, like browsing the internet, and downloading files. 

Participants must be in grade 7 or older and have a Whitby Public Library card in good standing to attend this workshop and use the 3D printer.

Evening Fiction Book Club at Central

This Month’s selection is the New York Times bestselling novel The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Library Journal says, “This fast-paced story offers courageous heroines, villains you love to hate, and dramatic life-or-death stakes. A compelling blend of historical fiction, mystery, and women’s fiction, Quinn’s complex story and engaging characters have something to offer just about everyone.” 

The Whitby Central Library Evening Fiction Book Club meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7 pm in the Children's Program Room. 

There will be a copy of each month's selection available for the first 12 registrants. Waitlisted registrants who have read the book are welcome to attend the meeting.

Gather around the fireplace while you socialize and stitch! This is an informal circle open to those 18+ for knitting, crochet and needlepoint; all skill levels are welcome! Please bring your own supplies.
