Block Party
10:00 AM

Children of all ages are invited to our Block Party!

Whitehall Public Library received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to implement a series of Block Play Parties for young children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant. Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building.

In addition to the wooden blocks the library received a variety of figurines, animals and other props for the children to use with the blocks.  Kids are only limited by their imaginations!  The libraries also received professional resources about block play and children’s development for parents. For young readers, the library has books about building, tools and more.

Block Parties will be held on the following dates:
• Saturday, February 25 at 10:00 am
• Saturday, March 25 at 10:00 am
• Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 am
• Saturday, May 20 at 10:00 am

Registration is not required. Bring a friend and enjoy us for a morning of building fun!

Oh Deer! : Landscaping in Deer Country
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Is there anything we can do to discourage deer from feasting on our plantings? In this program, we’ll discover the facts about these “wild neighbors” and learn to use that knowledge to our advantage when planning our landscaping. Plants highlighted are those recommended as deer resistant in Western Pennsylvania by Master Gardeners.

Learn about the use of deer repellents and ask and have your gardening questions answered by Penn State Master Gardener Coordinator, Philip Bauerle of the Penn State Extension.

This community education presentation is brought to you by the Whitehall Wildlife Committee and the Whitehall Public Library.

Shimmies, Shivers, and Vibrations: A Revealing Look at Belly Dance
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

As part of our focus on Women's History Month, the library presents an ancient dance form that highlights the female form and brings with it the cultural flavors of countries like Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey. Described in the 1800s as la danse du ventre, this “dance of the middle” is a celebration of female expression driven by fluid movement, curving patterns, and alluring dress.

Amethyst, a local dancer and belly dance expert, will lead an introduction to the dance’s history —rooted in folk art and village parties— and perform moves from a variety of styles of the form.

Join us for what will certainly be a moving afternoon dedicated to women, dance, and the power of the hips!

Designed as an interactive presentation open to all, you may choose to participate or simply observe from your seat.

Block Party

Humane Harrassment: Living with Nuisance Wildlife
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Learn about the animals that are usually considered “nuisance wildlife” and the best ways in which to live in harmony with them. We will discuss methods to get the animals to leave your house or neighborhood on their own accord, without having to resort to trapping or other lethal methods of removal. Using these “Humane Harassment” techniques is often much safer for everyone involved, and include many procedures for avoiding conflict situations with animals!

This community education presentation is brought to you by the Whitehall Wildlife Committee and the Whitehall Public Library.

Please be sure to register for this free program.

Presenter: Alexis Fitzgerald is the Manager of Humane and Wildlife Education for the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center (ARL). After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolution, Alexis has been working in the environmental education field. Alexis started volunteering at the ARL Wildlife Center in 2011 before being hired in the Education Department. She visits schools, libraries and other community organizations to educate individuals about the animals in the world around us.

ARL+WPHS

Both the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center and the Western PA Humane Society have rich histories of caring for animals of all kinds in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Since the organizations merged at the beginning of this year, we are able to care for even more animals, domestic and wild. We now have two open door shelters and one wildlife center. The Shelters take in well over 20,000 animals annually with the goal of placing those animals into good homes. We offer adoption services, pet training and even a low cost clinic for the community. Our Wildlife Center cares for native PA wildlife with the goal of releasing healthy animals back into the wild. The Wildlife Center treats over 3,500 animals annually.

Block Party

The Battle of the Philippine Sea: A Talk About the Turkey Shoot
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join Naval Intelligence Officer Paul Taylor (Ret.) for a discussion about one of the largest naval air conflicts in world history, the Second World War’s Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Providing a tense step-by-step timeline of the two-day battle, as well as its critical role in severely limiting the Japanese Navy’s power, Mr. Taylor will highlight the famous aerial portion of the conflict that came to be known as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.  His talk will also cover the particular aircraft and famous people involved in the struggle.

Refreshments will be served.

Bio:  Paul A. Taylor graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in Geological Engineering in 1959 and was accepted into Officers Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island.  He later attended Naval Aviation Orientation School in Jacksonville, Florida, before entering Air Intelligence School in Virginia.

As an intelligence officer, Mr. Taylor qualified for flight status as a Naval Aviation Observer (NAO) and served as a tactical coordinator.  During service in the Atlantic Fleet, his task group participated in several incidents including: the blockade of the Dominican Republic after the assassination of its dictator, Rafael Trujillo; the astronaut recoveries of Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and John Glenn; and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

He was awarded the National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba), and the Navy Expeditionary Medal (Cuba) for service during the missile crisis.
