Join us for a pairing of fine prose and food! We welcome local author Bob Hartley to dish about his new crime thriller, North and Central. Set in the Windy City of the 1970s, a time of blizzards and disco and John Wayne Gacy, the novel spins a yarn of corrupt cops, street toughs, and a bartender on his last legs who may become a criminal to make ends meet.
As a way to evoke the mood of the book, we’ll have a Chicago-style pizza party with deep dish slices for everyone!
Are you tough enough to survive the grit and grime of an epic Chicago winter? Find out and fill up!
Refreshments will be provided and copies of North and Central will be available for purchase following the talk.
Bio: Bob Hartley was raised on the West Side of Chicago. He holds an MFA in fiction from the University of Pittsburgh. His first novel, Following Tommy, was published in 2012 by Cervena Barva Press to extremely favorable reviews. He has been, among other things, a writer, actor, singer, teacher, bartender, mail room clerk, and washer of soap molds. He currently makes his living as a respiratory therapist and lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two children.

This program is open to all who are interested in military history and World War II. Veterans and non-veterans alike are welcome to join this lively group that meets on the last Wednesday of every month to discuss military conflicts and history.

He’ll talk about how his life compares to Auggie’s story in Wonder. Nick will answer all of your questions and wants you to know that no question is a bad one.

Just in time for its 125th anniversary, the library and The Frick Pittsburgh bring you a dynamic picture presentation of this “wonder of wonders”. We’ll look back at the six-month event that defined the Gilded Age as well as set the stage for a new century—the World’s Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893.

The Butterfly Project with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh
The Butterfly Project is a call to action through education, the arts and memorial making. It uses the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry and cultivates empathy and social responsibility. Participants paint ceramic butterflies that are permanently displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, with the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies around the world—one for each child who perished in the Holocaust, and honoring the survivors. Registration is required.

Allegheny Park Rangers present Skins and Skulls!
Rangers will lead students in exploring the native animal species of our county by looking at our extensive collection of animal skins and skulls. Students will have the opportunity to touch all of the specimens and discover animal traits on their own through questions, answer and observation. This class is for children in grades 1-5. Reuse-a-Palooza!-Creative Reuse!
Reuse-a-Palooza is an exploratory art activity where participants are invited to create with a large array of playful, reclaimed materials. Participants exercise their creative muscles and learn, hands-on, about reuse. Materials are set up buffet-style and each participant collects the materials they wish to use. Each worktable has a kit of essential tools for making. Teaching artists provide examples, inspiration & encouragement, and assist with material selection and assembly on an as-needed basis.This class if for children in grades 1-5.
