This month, we are reading The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive - until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.

On the eve of triumph, his plans are upended by charismatic businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), who believes he and his partner, the upstart genius Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), have a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify America: with AC current.  As Edison and Westinghouse grapple for who will power the nation, they spark one of the first and greatest corporate feuds in American history, establishing for future Titans of Industry the need to break all the rules.  (Rotten Tomatoes)

Perseverance: A Personal Journey from Auschwitz to Pittsburgh
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Join us for an intimate book talk about character and triumph in the face of murderous adversity.  We welcome author Lee Kikel to speak about her father’s miraculous journey from concentration camp prisoner to Pittsburgh family man.

In the decade before his arrival in the United States in 1950, Mieczyslaw Goldman saw his home destroyed, his family torn apart, his health ruined, and nearly everyone he had ever known murdered in the death camps of the Third Reich.  His survival of the years in the ghetto and Auschwitz, his long and slow recovery, and his attainment of a somewhat normal life are miraculous.  Perhaps even more miraculous is his refusal to let his experience destroy his faith in God or his love for humanity.

Told in his own words from audio recordings he made decades later, and supplemented with his daughter’s memories of their happy life in Pittsburgh, Perseverance is a story which no reader will ever forget.

**Special refreshments will be served and copies of the book will be available for purchase following the talk.**

Stop by the Second Chapter Cafe to watch a different film each week!

This week's selection is Little Women!

Writer-director Greta Gerwig has crafted a film that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author's alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig's film, the beloved story of the March sisters --four young women each determined to live life on her own terms-- is both timeless and timely.  The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.  (Rotten Tomatoes)

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood: A Special Screening
11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

"That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life.”

Take a stroll with us to Tinsel Town in the 1960s for a special screening of Quentin Tarantino’s latest masterpiece, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood!

A cinematic love letter to the films, television, and pop culture of the fifties and sixties, the movie follows Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), an aging actor who feels as if his best roles, and best times, are behind him.  It isn’t long before his life takes a turn for the worse when he inadvertently comes into contact with a group of outcasts from a nearby commune calling themselves the Manson Family.

We’ll have a light luncheon fit for any A-lister (or their stuntman), so come be our leading star!

Matinee in the Cafe!
1:15 PM

11521_sh-movie-matinee

Stop by the Second Chapter Cafe to watch a different film each week!

This week's selection is Just Mercy!

Based on the powerful true story, this film follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice.  After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation.  One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian (Oscar winner Jamie Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them.  (Rotten Tomatoes)

Run time: 136 minutes

June 9th at 2:00 PM - Staying Well in the Gilded Age

If you got sick, accidentally injured yourself, or just plain didn’t feel well in the 19th century, your health care options were limited. Your options were, nevertheless, interesting.  From folk remedies to controversial treatments, learn the many ways our ancestors sought to cure what ailed them.

November 10th at 7:00 PM - A Well-Appointed Table: Dining at the Turn of the Century

It has been said that dining is the privilege of civilization.  A person’s standing in turn-of-the-century society could be measured by the way they took their meals.  This presentation takes a look at the ritual act of eating across cultures while paying special focus to America’s Gilded Age—a time when dining reached a pinnacle of refinement!

December 8th at 2:00 PM - Victorian Holiday Traditions

Do you know when the first Christmas card was sent? Or why many people keep a bucket of water handy when they lit their Christmas trees?  Explore the origins of these and many other Victorian holiday traditions.

Mystery Book Club
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Are you thrilled by a good mystery?

Join our Mystery Book Club! We meet once a month to discuss the hottest whodunnits. New members are always welcome.

This month, we are reading Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

In a small town in Virginia, a group of people know each other because they’re part of a special treatment center, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions from infertility to autism. But then the chamber explodes, two people die, and it’s clear the explosion wasn’t an accident. A powerful showdown unfolds as the story moves across characters who are all maybe keeping secrets, hiding betrayals. Chapter by chapter, we shift alliances and gather evidence: Was it the careless mother of a patient? Was it the owners, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? Could it have been a protester, trying to prove the treatment isn’t safe?

So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away. Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew.

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Calling all Junior Conservationists! Register for our new children’s summer series of workshops sponsored by Whitehall Committee for Environmental Action (WCEA). Class 5: Watershed: Where does our rainwater go?

Junior Conservationists will use a model to follow stormwater from our homes to our waterways, and practice doing your part to keep the ecosystem clean!
