CBHI Family Forum
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

CHL is an non-profit organization located in central Massachusetts. Community Healthlink is committed to promoting, restoring, and maintaining the physical health, mental health and dignity of adults, children and families in Central Massachusetts who are experiencing mental illness, addiction or homelessness.  Community Healthlink’s services are grounded in the principles of recovery and the belief that every person has the right to choose his or her own recovery path. Community Healthlink uses evidence-based practices and relevant state-of-the-art research aimed at improving the lives of our consumers.

CHL has been asked to host 4 family voice forums over the next year in order to hear from the families we serve, specifically for families who are currently or have been involved in CBHI (Child Behavioral Health Initiative) services. Family Voice Forums are an opportunity to hear from caregivers and young adults regarding their experience with the behavioral health system. Their input provides a critical understanding to the areas of strength and need within the service delivery system. Older youth and caregivers who have had experiences with any of the CBHI services are encouraged to participate. The feedback and themes generated from these meetings will be shared with MassHealth and other stakeholders.

Vegetable gardening is something everyone can enjoy, from the novice to the experienced gardener.  It can be a way to bring fresh food to your table, teach children where food comes from, or even a way to beautify your yard!  We’ll look at different types of vegetable gardens and discuss layout, variety choices, and growing techniques.

Gretel Anspach is a Lifetime Master Gardener, and education coordinator for the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association. Gretel helped to establish and maintain two food production gardens that have provided fresh produce to the Marlboro Food Pantry for the last five years.

Volunteer to Become a Special Education Surrogate Parent
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Are you interested in supporting students in your community?  You can help by volunteering to become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) for a student in state care that requires special education supports and whose parents are unknown or unavailable. These children depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education.

SESPs serve as appointed decision makers that have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend and participate in special education team meetings, approve or reject Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and if necessary, file complains or appeals. On average, the time commitment is only 30-40 hours a year.

RTSC hosts FREE Orientation Trainings throughout the state where you will learn about the role of an SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP. Register to attend this training or visit our website at www.fcsn.org/rtsc/ to view our current training schedule for other opportunities.

Registration is required.

You can register online at http://fcsn.org/rtsc/orientations/ or contact Danielle Hardin at dhardin@fcsn.org or 617-399-8342. (PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CONTACT PHONE NUMBER.)

Urban Planning with the People
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

This interactive presentation and discussion will explore ways that cities such as Worcester can include citizens in early stages and throughout the urban planning process.

Dr. Tom Conroy is the Chair and Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Worcester State University.  An urban historian by training with a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, both his scholarly work and community-engaged scholarship focuses on the idea of urban exclusion historically and contemporarily, and ways to redress it.  Urban exclusion refers to the variety of processes whereby people are disenfranchised in and by the cities in which they live and work.  He has recently co-authored "In Search of Opportunity:  Latino Men’s Path to Post-Secondary Education in Urban Massachusetts" and is a co-creator of the CitySpeak Initiative, a research- and arts-based approach to urban planning and community development.

Free Tai Chi classes with Master Jim Keenan are now available at the Main Library during the summer.  These classes are designed for all ages and all fitness levels. Just wear loose fitting  clothing and comfortable shoes, and you’ll be good to go.

Free Tai Chi classes with Master Jim Keenan will provide basic Chinese exercises for cultivation of health and inner well being. Participants should wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes. While previous taiji practice may be helpful, no previous skill is required. Sessions will be suitable for all ages and physical conditions and allowances will be made for participants who must practice while seated.

Jim Keenan is an internationally recognized master who has been teaching taiji and Chinese internal arts for 45 years. He trained in multiple styles of taiji under exceptional Chinese masters like Zhang Luping and Chen Meili. His background in Chinese language and culture has allowed him to bring additional insight to Westerners as they learn and feel the personal benefits of these ancient health and self defense practices. Mr. Keenan is known for his high level of skill and in-depth knowledge. He is also patient and kind and will ensure all participants have the opportunity for an invigorating and uplifting experience practicing this wonderful ancient Chinese art.

Zumba is an hour-long, high energy, calorie-burning fitness class that uses pop and Latin music to create a dance-party atmosphere. Low-intensity and high-intensity moves are easy to follow for all level participants who can set their own pace. It is an effective and fun cardio workout that melts fat, strengthens core, and improves flexibility.

Alina Khaspekov is  a certified Zumba instructor with over 3 years experience teaching Zumba and Zumba Tone classes. I love music and dancing. I love seeing smiling faces after each class, love watching everyone learning the moves, improving, feeling more confident, and having fun.

Guided Meditation
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Mindful meditation is simple and can positively impact our health and sense of wellbeing. The hardest part is making time to practice. Whether you are learning for the first time or have been practicing for years, feel free to join these one-hour guided meditation practices. These mini-retreats begin with a brief explanation of the style of meditation to be practiced in that session. There will be a few minutes for question and answers then the rest of the time and then practice will begin. Registration is required. Please call 508-799-1655 x3 or visit www.mywpl.org to register.

Led by Ginny Wholley, an experienced leader and coach who was trained by the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness, founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Wholley has decades of personal practice and teaching yoga and meditation.
