Book Cover Redesign Contest!
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This summer, we’re asking our teens to see if they can redesign those book covers to make them EVEN MORE APPEALING. Choose a favorite book and make a new cover for it – illustrate it, collage it, photograph it, whatever art medium you like!

You can submit your finished artwork either to librarian Rachel in the Youth Services department, or online via an email to rmoir@mywpl.org. Be sure to include your name, age, school, the title and author of the book you are redesigning, and a phone number or email address where we can contact you! We will display the entries in the teen room starting at the end of August, and our panel of judges will pick one lucky winner – who gets their choice of either the program Clip Paint Studio pro (formerly known as Manga Studio) or a $25 VISA giftcard! Deadline is August 19th at 5:30 pm.

Urban Planning with the People
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

This interactive presentation and discussion will explore ways that cities such as Worcester can include citizens in early stages and throughout the urban planning process.

Dr. Tom Conroy is the Chair and Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Worcester State University.  An urban historian by training with a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, both his scholarly work and community-engaged scholarship focuses on the idea of urban exclusion historically and contemporarily, and ways to redress it.  Urban exclusion refers to the variety of processes whereby people are disenfranchised in and by the cities in which they live and work.  He has recently co-authored "In Search of Opportunity:  Latino Men’s Path to Post-Secondary Education in Urban Massachusetts" and is a co-creator of the CitySpeak Initiative, a research- and arts-based approach to urban planning and community development.
