Fake News: Its Challenges, Consequences & Rise

In cooperation with the Camden Conference 2020, the Library will present a program entitled: “Fake News: Its Challenges, Consequences, and Rise.” Martin Gagnon, former journalist and current reference librarian, will provide participants with tips on how to look critically and analyze digital, television, and print media resources. Through videos and slides, the session will examine the history of misinformation and the psychology of irrationality brought about by biases and social forces. This insightful presentation will also examine the role of technology in the creation and spread of “fake news” and suggest helpful resources to verify images and fact check news stories. Prior to his work in the public library profession, Gagnon was a journalist for newspapers in Maine and New Hampshire. In 2017, in collaboration with many other partners, he participated in a media literacy initiative in Chicago which was a project of the American Library Association (ALA). His presentation at York Public Library is part of the Camden Conference Community Events Programs. The 2020 theme for the Camden Conference is “The Media Revolution: Changing the World” and the Conference itself will take place in Camden on February 21-23, 2020. FMI: www.CamdenConference.org

Meditation Meetup

In our harried world, wouldn't it be nice to just slow down and...BE? In partnership with area practitioners, the York Public Library offers a program to help you do just that.  Each Wednesday evening, we are pleased to offer a drop-in guided meditation from 5:30-6:30PM in our Community Room on the lower level of the library.

Weekly sessions will be led by a rotation of practitioners, including:

  • Jerry Mayfield is a 20-year practitioner of Sahaja Yoga meditation. He regularly leads are classes for Adult Education programs and will soon resume teaching at Yoga by Donation in Portsmouth.
  • Maia Rizzi is a licensed Clinical Hypnotherapist.  She will lead guided visualizations to create healing energy, thereby calming and focusing the subconscious mind to connect with the body. She has practiced this work for over twenty years in the United States, the Caribbean, and Asia.
  • Avi Magidoff belongs to the 43rd generation of the LinJi Meditation School, and has been a student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh for more than two decades. He practices acupuncture in Portsmouth, teaching mindfulness, meditation and acupuncture in North America, Europe and Asia. “In each session we practice sitting meditation as well as walking meditation for calming the mind as well as developing, concentrating and observing our habitual patterns so as to gain insight and free ourselves of those patterns. We shall then extend the space created within ourselves to daily life through telephone meditation, eating meditation, etc.”

All ages and abilities are welcome. No prior experience needed. Please dress comfortably. The library has a very limited number of meditation cushions available on a first come, first serve basis. If you have your own cushion, please bring it with you.

As always, this program is free and open to all
