Friday Night Flicks at Fowler presents Midnight in Paris (Fowler)

Join the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library for a screening of Midnight in Paris (USA, Spain 2011).

Summary: Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni star in Woody Allen's romantic comedy about a family on a business trip in the City of Light. As a young couple engaged to be married experiences a profound transformation during their visit to Paris, an idealistic man with a romanticized view of the city finds that there's plenty of truth to that old adage about the grass being greener on the other side. Michael Sheen, Mimi Kennedy, and Kurt Fuller co-star.

Mindful Creative Writing (Main)

Energize the creative force within! Whether you journal for pleasure, dabble with fiction or non-fiction, or hope to publish your work, writing mindfully can move you toward a new dimension of self-expression. In this session, we’ll tap into your imagination to observe the world with greater inspiration and focus. Discover practices that generate new work, celebrate your authentic voice, and express your ideas with greater confidence.

Lara JK Wilson, MA, GCMS - A meditator for over thirty years, Lara’s practices explore how mindfulness and the creative process benefit health. In addition to completing a Master’s Certificate in Mindfulness Studies at Lesley University, Lara is an award-winning author of short stories and a Grub Street instructor and former board member with a master’s degree in literature from Harvard, Lara advocates incorporating mindfulness in all levels of education. She has developed mindfulness curricula for schools in the north and south, led mindful wellness retreats, and designed personal practice with hundreds. After experiencing the power of mindfulness during eighteen months of cancer treatment, Lara established Be Well Be Here, a non-profit collaborative mindful wellness center in Concord, MA. Join the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library for a screening of Lost in Paris (France/Belgium 2016).

Summary: Filmed in Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon's signature whimsical style, and stars the filmmakers as a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical French vagabond. When Fiona's orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her elderly Aunt Martha who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom, the affable, but annoying tramp who won't leave her alone. (In English and French)

Author Talk: Whitney Scharer, The Age of Light (Main)

A captivating debut novel by Whitney Scharer, The Age of Light tells the story of Vogue model turned renowned photographer Lee Miller, and her search to forge a new identity as an artist after a life spent as a muse. Arriving in Paris in 1929, Lee catches the eye of the famous Surrealist Man Ray and convinces him to take her on as his assistant. Man Ray turns out to be an egotistical, charismatic force, and as they work together in the darkroom, their personal and professional lives become intimately entwined. Lee's journey takes us from the cabarets of bohemian Paris to the battlefields of war-torn Europe during WWII, from discovering radical new photography techniques to documenting the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents. Through it all, Lee must grapple with the question of whether it's possible to reconcile romantic desire with artistic ambition. Told in interweaving timelines, this sensuous, richly detailed novel brings Lee Miller-a brilliant and pioneering artist-out of the shadows of a man's legacy and into the light.

Mindful Read and Be Well during National Library Week (Main)

Reading heals us! Join us for a literary conversation that explores reading as a mindful wellness practice. How does reading help us untangle struggles in our own lives? How do stories enhance our understanding of human nature, increase empathy, and lead to shifts in perspective? We’ll look at aspects of bibliotherapy, and discuss why reading not only relaxes the ruminating mind, but sparks joyful human connection.

Learn more at BeWellBeHere.org

Mindful Transitions: Change as a Great Adventure (Main)

Life is full of change: school years end, kids leave for college, parents age, health concerns arise, careers shifts, unexpected events unfold – oh my! How can we face life’s transitions without feeling utterly overwhelmed? One way is to experience life as moments of possibility through mindful wellness practices. As Roz Zander writes in The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life, we can “draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view.” Join us to discuss cultivating new practices that reduce anxiety and help us thrive. Launch your adventure toward possibility and contentment!
