Hang out in the library and knit with your friends!  Come to the Upper Darby Municipal Library to learn how to do basic knitting.  We will be using round looms which are easy to use to knit hats.  We will also have knitting needles available for those who are interested in taking on a challenge or already know how to knit.  The yarn, looms, and knitting needles will be provided.  Any finished projects can either be kept by the participant or be set aside for donation to a community organization.  This program is open to grades 6-12.  We will meet every Monday from October 2nd-December 18th from 3:30 - 5:30 pm.    Call 610-734-7649 to register.

Join us to listen and learn about some of the greatest composers and their symphonies of the past 300 years!

In this Great Courses video lecture series, music historian Professor Robert Greenberg guides the listener through a survey of the symphony, from it's inception as a classical form to the modern era.  You will learn about the composers and the masterpieces they created, some well-known and others overlooked and in need of our attention.  

Each week, we will present two lectures, 45-minutes each, with a break for refreshments in between.  You may attend any lecture(s) on its own or come for the entire series. Our lectures will cover the following topics:

The Parent-Child Workshop is a multi-week series that involves infants & toddlers (ages 0-3 years) and their parents/caregivers; features local professionals who serve as resources for parents; emphasizes the role of parents as the first teachers of their children; facilitates early intervention; and teaches strategies for healthy child development and early literacy. The workshops are informal and basically a free-play day, with weekly professionals in the room to answer any questions you may have pertaining to your child's development in their specialized field.

You must be able to commit to at least 3 weeks of our series.


By registering you agree to attend the following 4 weekly classes:

  1. Week 1 = Early Literacy (Mr. Jason)
  2. Week 2 = Child Development (Riddle Hospital)
  3. Week 3 = Nutrition & Occupational Therapy (Penn State Extension & CHOP)
  4. Week 4 = Speech, Hearing and Language Development (Riddle Hospital)

T'ai Chi Chih

Start off 2018 with T’ai Chi Chih!

This 8-week series will be taught by Kathleen McAllister,  an accredited instructor dedicated to helping students of all ages reduce stress and regain balance through this "user friendly" moving meditation.   If you’ve taken the previous classes (not a requirement) you’ll learn some different tips and tricks this time.

T’ai Chi Chih is a gentle moving meditation practiced by thousands of people around the world and designed for a lifetime of movement.  T’ai Chi Chih can be adapted to any physical condition and modified to a seated practice. Wear comfortable clothing to class.

Class size is limited.  Registration is required for each session you’d like to attend.  If you find you cannot attend a session after you’ve signed up, please let us know as soon as possible so someone on the waiting list can have your spot.

The daily struggles of a mother and her autistic son are the subject of Cheryl Borelli’s memoir Dear Nicky, Love Mommy. 

Ms. Borelli will visit the library to speak about how she came to write the book. Her son Nicholas, age 18, has severe

 autism. This book is a memoir of their life and experiences from Nicky's birth through adolescence. Cheryl shares her

 personal journal, as well as letters to Nicky. She hopes to help and inspire others. by sharing her

journey through depression and grief, and by offering support to others who feel alone in their day to day struggle.

Copies of Cheryl's book will be available for purchase and signing, although purchase of the book is not required for attendance.

This is a Civc and Social Literacy Program of the PA Forward Initiative.

Come to HTFL and practice reading to the best listener—A dog! Therapy dogs come to the Library to meet with young readers and listen to children read a book of their choice.  
 
Within a week from the program date, you will be assigned a 10-minute time slot for your child to read with one of the therapy dogs.  Please plan to arrive a few minutes before your time begins.  
 
If you DO NOT receive an email within a week from the program date, you are on the wait list!  
 
This program is free and open to children in grades K and up.  Registration is REQUIRED through Eventkeeper for each month you participate.

Each week features 80% repetition of nursery rhymes and songs to help build recognition and familiarity and includes developmental tips for interacting with your child to enhance early literacy skills.  Held at the RML REcollection at 167 W. Pre-walker Circle Time

Exclusively for our youngest patrons who are not yet walking. Join us for an award winning program for babies! This gentle yet lively story time features bouncing and tickling rhymes, peek-a-boo games, short books, nursery rhymes, and music while the young babies sit comfortably close to their caregivers without the distraction of more mobile babies. The story time is about 15 minutes long followed by a playtime featuring a variety of age appropriate toys. This program is not appropriate for older babies or siblings who are walking.

See plants in a new way in this video lecture series from the Great Courses, as Professor Catherine Kleier invites us into the uniquely satisfying world of plants, and the joy of celebrating and learning from the secrets of living nature. We will show three 30-minute lectures each week:

T'ai Chi Chih

Start off 2018 with T’ai Chi Chih!

This 8-week series will be taught by Kathleen McAllister,  an accredited instructor dedicated to helping students of all ages reduce stress and regain balance through this "user friendly" moving meditation.   If you’ve taken the previous classes (not a requirement) you’ll learn some different tips and tricks this time.

T’ai Chi Chih is a gentle moving meditation practiced by thousands of people around the world and designed for a lifetime of movement.  T’ai Chi Chih can be adapted to any physical condition and modified to a seated practice. Wear comfortable clothing to class.

Class size is limited.  Registration is required for each session you’d like to attend.  If you find you cannot attend a session after you’ve signed up, please let us know as soon as possible so someone on the waiting list can have your spot.

Classes will be held on the following Thursdays from 12:00—1:00
