Darby Library Microscopy Club
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

BIOLOGY: The Study of Living Organisms.

In May of 2017, the Darby Free Library was one of only 75 libraries in America to be awarded the prestigious, NASA@MYLIBRARY Grant. Its purpose is to teach the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.) to our patrons.

As part of our grant, we initiated a Microscopy Laboratory to introduce and to investigate the vast field of biology and its many sub disciplines, like medicine, botany, and zoology, to our students and patrons.

Nothing beats "Hands On Experimenting and Learning." There is absolutely no substitute for observing scientific specimens live through the eyepiece of a microscope. It is far superior to looking at a dry picture in a textbook. The students are much more interested and learn more.

Our students are having so much fun that they don't even realize that they are learning. Our students can't wait to get their hands on the microscopes and view biologic specimens, and to go outside into our yard and pick their own specimens to observe. We teach them the fundamentals of the Life Sciences, across the biologic spectrum, and the science of light microscopy; that is, how to properly setup and use a light microscope.

Some students have already evinced an interest in becoming medical researchers and physicians.

All are welcome to attend our exciting sessions, students and interested adults.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN!

One of the most important things parents can do, beyond keeping kids healthy and safe, is to read with them. That means starting when they are newborns and not even able to talk, and continuing well beyond the years that they can read by themselves. Study after study shows that early reading with children helps them learn to speak, interact, bond with parents, and read early themselves. In addition, reading with kids who already know how to read helps them feel close to caretakers, understand the world around them, and be empathetic citizens of the world!

The Darby Free Library is pleased to present a program titled, " 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten." The goal is to read 1,000 books to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler before your child starts kindergarten.

Start by signing up at the Darby Free Library for a free book and supplies to help you to keep track.
And, yes, you can repeat books.

Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in a young child’s growth and development. The overall goal of Family Place Libraries is to develop and institutionalize a family friendly environment by transforming libraries into community centers for literacy, early childhood development, parent education and engagement, family support and community information.

"A multi-week program for toddlers and their parents/caregivers, this fun, informal, play-based program provides a rich environment of toys, books and art activities. Families have the opportunity to spend time together, make new friends, and talk one-on-one with a different community resource professional each week. Check out this video about the workshop."

Great Adventure Awaits!

Join us the second and fourth Wednesdays every month from 4pm-6pm as we explore vast kingdoms and galaxies far, far away. We'll learn the basics of table-top gaming systems, compare with Live-Action systems (aka LARP) and experiment with new systems as they are released. Build your own hero and enrich their backstory. Solve complex puzzles, evade dangerous traps, and wage epic battles! What fate will befall you and your companions? Roll the dice and see.

Role-playing is a great way for young adults to build social skills, work as a team, practice problem solving, mathematics, and to learn ethics.

Ages 10-13, register via email to mateen@delcolibraries.org

Curious, but not sure if you want to play? Come visit and watch a game, or play a stock character from our vault.

Fridays in December 2018; 10:30am-11:45am

Geared towards infants-preschoolers (ages 0-4). REGISTRATION IS REQUESTED as space is limited to 20 families! Your registration saves your family's spot for all 4 weeks! Include the total number of adults and kids that will be attending weekly.

"PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat, or bunny!) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other settings where they can feel comfortable and confident — and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble."

MFL is a participating library in PAWS for Reading program! We have enough spaces per visit for 12 kids/readers. We recommend ages 5+ or any one who can read aloud.

Readers are limited to 10 minutes of reading aloud to a pet, but can read on their own or enjoy the library while waiting. Register for each individual child you will be bringing (do not include yourself or caregivers in the number).

If you register but do not show-up without notice, you will forfeit any future sign-ups for this program. Those unable to sign up are welcome to come and take any open space that may happen from no-shows!

This program is sponsored and made possible by Media Veterinary Hospital!

Darby Library Astronomical Society
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

** The Darby Library Astronomical Society **

We are pleased to announce the inception of the Darby Library Astronomical Society!

In 2017, the Darby Library was one of only 75 libraries in America to be awarded the prestigious NASA@MYLIBRARY GRANT. In compliance with the spirit of this grant, we are aggressively promoting the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to our students, patrons, and underserved elements of our community.

Last year, we instituted a Microscopy Laboratory and  a Geology Laboratory. These programs are conducted every Thursday at 4:00 PM. The Microscopy Laboratory investigates the broad topic of biology and its many subdivisions. The geology lab investigates the constituents of our planet, Earth.

We are now introducing the Darby Library Astronomical Society, whose purpose is to introduce the majestic universe in which we live to all.

Our universe is incredibly beautiful. Everyone would have a telescope if he or she could see the delicate beauty of Saturn's rings, the craters and mountains on the Moon, or Jupiter and its Galilean Moons, with their own eyes.

Nothing beats the experience of seeing these wonders, live, in real time, with your own eyes. These celestial wonders come alive! The experience is much more profound than viewing sterile, photos of the Moon, or other astronomical phenomena in a text book.

We at the Darby Library intend to show our community all of these wonders, and more! We intend to make the Darby Library the center of astronomical observations in Darby Borough.

Unfortunately, star gazers are at the mercy of the weather, Mother Nature, so we cannot set a definite day and time for our observations. However, generally we will observe on Thursday evenings at about 5:00 PM. Telephone the library to confirm when observations will begin.

Additionally, when special astronomical events occur, like Lunar Eclipes, or heightened sunspot activity, we will provide a front-row seat to these phenomena.

All are welcome. It's your universe, come and see it as never before!

RIPPLES OF LOSS: An Experiential Workshop to Explore Grief and Resilience
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Please join us for an interactive workshop where we will safely navigate the ripples that often follow an initial loss – like lack of confidence, uncertain purpose, and fear of intimacy. We will also explore things we can let in to live a more wholehearted life while still grieving in a healthy way –  such as community, curiosity, and creativity.

Facilitated by Bonnie Neubauer, a Certified Creative Grief Support Practitioner. She is a widow who has dedicated this new part of her life to helping others express their losses and ultimately reach a place where their lives, once again, have meaning.

It is possible to transform after a loss. This supportive workshop will set you on that path.

The workshop is free and will be held in the 2nd floor meeting room. (There is no elevator.)

Registration is required.
