Color Me Happy
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Coloring for Adults is here at Newtown Public Library! Drop in, pick up some colored pencils and color for your own well-being on coloring pages, all supplied by the library or bring your own. But why coloring?

Coloring actually has been shown to have many benefits for adults. According to WebJunction, many libraries believe that coloring supports health literacy, pointing to research that indicates that it de-stresses and lessens anxiety in adults, and can be especially beneficial to people with brain damage or dementia. Coloring also invites creativity and stretching imagination muscles from childhood that may have gone dormant while fulfilling the responsibilities of adulthood.

Coloring creates social connection, both as a way for the library to connect with the community, and for community members to connect with each other, overcoming isolation and loneliness. It’s also a chance for library staff to help patrons informally with books they might enjoy or information they may be seeking, or simply to introduce people to the other programs and services the library and the community at large offers.

And finally, coloring is just fun! Please join us and see how coloring to happiness helps you.

A Talk About Racial Justice and Civic Engagement w/ Dr. Jennifer Wyse

Conversations about race can be difficult and sometimes turn contentious. Why is such an important topic so hard to talk about? Perceptions and understanding of race are directly impacted and formed by the society and culture around us. This lecture will explore views of race, how society impacts our understanding of it, and how it has evolved over time. This talk will lead into and frame racial justice movements including Black Lives Matter and the NAACP.

Dr. Jennifer “Jen” Padilla Wyse is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Widener University. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Virginia Tech with a concentration in social inequality (race/gender/class) and Africana Studies.

An Evening with Dotty Brown: Author of Boathouse Row
7:30 PM

Radnor Historical Society is our partner for this event. Former Inquirer reporter and rower Dotty Brown delves river-deep into the history of the city’s rowing culture and the landmark clubhouses built to further it, as well as some of the city’s most enduring characters. It is the first book to lift the curtain on the little-known culture and history of Philadelphia’s iconic 19th century landmark, revealing stories of passion and perseverance along with hard-won victory. With more than 160 photographs, Boathouse Row chronicles the “waves of change” as various groups of different races, classes, and genders fought for access to rowing on the Schuylkill River and the sport itself. Books will be available for purchase.  This event takes place at the Radnor Township Building, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

"PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat, or bunny!) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other settings where they can feel comfortable and confident — and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble."

MFL is now a participating library in PAWS for Reading program! We have enough spaces per visit for 12 kids/readers. We recommend ages 5+ (or any one who can read aloud).

Dates for PAWS for Reading:

Wednesday, April 5 @ 6:30pm

Saturday, April 8 @ 2pm

Wednesday, May 3 @ 6:30pm

Saturday, May 6 @ 2pm

Wednesday, June 7 @ 6:30pm

Saturday, June 10 @ 2pm

Readers are limited to 10 minutes of reading aloud to a pet, but can read on their own or color while waiting. Register to reserve a spot for your young reader using his/her name. Click "Add Guest" to add spot(s) for siblings. Click on the dates above to go to that date's registration page.

The 10-minute time slots will be done on a first come, first to sign up on site at the library on the day of the visit.

If you register but do not show-up without notice, you will forfeit any future sign-ups for this program.

Those on our wait list are welcome to come and take any open space that may happen from no-shows.

Reform for Fair Districts
7:30 PM

Swarthmore Public Library & Fair Districts PA present:

Gerrymandering: a panel discussion

Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:30pm

Fair Districts PA will feature:

Rep. Leanne Krueger-Braneky, PA State Rep.

Peter Mardinly, Fair Districts PA

Ben Geffern, Public Interest Law Center

Fair Districts PA is a coalition of citizens and organizations who believe that in American democracy, elections should represent the will of all the people, not just the politicians, and should provide citizens with meaningful choices in electing representatives.

When partisan politicians manipulate voting maps to keep themselves and their parties in power, they shape election outcomes before the first vote is cast. When that happens, voters feel they have no voice, and legislators feel less need to listen to constituents.

Fair Districts PA believes that Pennsylvania needs to reform its redistricting rules and make the process of drawing districts impartial, transparent and accountable - promoting competitive elections and partisan fairness so our government truly is of, by and for the people.

Author talk - Table for One
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Kevin J. Wilson used to write restaurant reviews on his website phillyrestaurantreviews.com until tragedy struck. His mother passed away in 2011. Then, both his brother and sister passed away during the same week before Christmas in 2013. He was beset by extreme grief and serious depression. He wrote the book Table for One as a self-healing memoir that pays tribute to his family members, and aims to help others who have also experienced great loss. Kevin's book reflects the unbreakable bond between food and family.

Kevin's book Table for One will be available for purchase and signing by the author.
