Darby Library Microscopy Club
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

BIOLOGY: The Study of Living Organisms.

In May of 2017, the Darby Free Library was one of only 76 libraries in America to be awarded the prestigious, NASA@MYLIBRARY Grant. Its purpose is to teach the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.) to our patrons.

As part of our grant, we initiated a Microscopy Laboratory to introduce and to investigate the vast field of biology and its many sub disciplines, like medicine, botany, and zoology, to our students and patrons.

Nothing beats "Hands On Experimenting and Learning." There is absolutely no substitute for observing scientific specimens live through the eyepiece of a microscope. It is far superior to looking at a dry picture in a textbook. The students are much more interested and learn more.

Our students are having so much fun that they don't even realize that they are learning. Our students can't wait to get their hands on the microscopes and view biologic specimens, and to go outside into our yard and pick their own specimens to observe. We teach them the fundamentals of the Life Sciences, across biologic spectrum, and the science of light microscopy; that is, how to properly setup and use a light microscope.

Some students have already evinced an interest in becoming medical researchers and physicians.

All are welcome to attend our exciting sessions, students and interested adults.

***CANCELLED*** Understanding Cash Flow - A Business Survival Guide
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Sales and earnings are not enough to survive, just ask W.T. Grant who had consistent earnings growth, yet went bankrupt. Ask Bernie Madoff, whose Ponzi scheme would have gone on had it not been for the lack of new cash inflows. In fact, the number two cause of business failures is not knowing the difference between earnings and cash! Additionally, understanding the value of time in the cash equation is critical to business survival. This seminar, presented by Chester and Delaware County SCORE and Tom Faughnan, will help you to better understand the differences between cash and earnings as well as provide some suggestions as to how to maximize cash.

Dr. Steve Phillips, from the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archeaology and Anthropology, returns to the library with another fascinating lecture. This time, Dr. Steve will explore the sciencebehind ancient Egyptians mummies. He'll discuss how the mummification process developed through time, how mummies were actually made, and will explore why they hold such a fascination in popular culture. A number of illustrations in this talk are images of actual ancient Egyptian mummies, many collected as part of Dr. Phillips's own research in Egypt.
