Taste Buds Cookbook Group: Appetizers
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Now we're cookin'! Do you love browsing through cookbooks, trying new recipes or cooking techniques? Hang onto your spatula because here’s a group for you. We have a new theme each month and group members can bring a prepared dish from either one of the cookbooks chosen, or their own! Join the conversation and if you choose to bring food (never required!), here are some things to remember:

  • Food should reflect the current or an upcoming topic.
  • Be enough for 4-6 people to sample a bite. (More is always welcome!)
  • Bring the recipe to share.

It doesn't matter if you're new to the kitchen or can make a soufflé with your eyes closed. Either way, everyone has fun.

Big Ideas Book Discussion: Being Mortal
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Being mortal : medicine and what matters in the end / Atul GawandeModern medicine has transformed our lives, but what is its role in the inescapable reality of aging and death? Dr. Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End has spent more than a year on the New York Times Best Seller list and fostered countless conversations about medicine and end-of-life issues. Author Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting those who are sick and the dependent elderly. He explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified. A palliative care professional from Lutheran Hospice joins our discussion. We’ll also watch part of the PBS Frontline documentary, Being Mortal. All are welcome for this one-time community discussion.

Tuesday Night Books@Arvada

We're discussing the novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Blackman. Ove is the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats and unexpected friendships.
