The reconstructionist

Join us for our Thursday Morning Book Group and meet author Nick Arvin. We will be discussing his book, The Reconstructionist. At a loose end after college, Ellis Barstow drifts back to his home town and a strange profession: reconstructing fatal traffic accidents. He seems to take to the work immediately, and forms a bond with his boss and mentor, John Boggs, an intriguing character of few but telling words. "Car accidents are by far the most commonplace manner of premature death in America, and it's rare to find someone who hasn't been affected by one. It's surprising, then, that so little has been written about it in American fiction... This has changed with the appearance of a remarkable new novel, The Reconstructionist." ~ The Denver Post

Big Ideas Book Discussion: Being Mortal
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Being mortal : medicine and what matters in the end / Atul GawandeModern medicine has transformed our lives, but what is its role in the inescapable reality of aging and death? Dr. Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End has spent more than a year on the New York Times Best Seller list and fostered countless conversations about medicine and end-of-life issues. Author Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting those who are sick and the dependent elderly. He explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified. A palliative care professional from Lutheran Hospice joins our discussion. We’ll also watch part of the PBS Frontline documentary, Being Mortal. All are welcome for this one-time community discussion.
