The Center for PostNatural History

Image result for postnatural history museum pittsburgh

This will be a thought provoking, unique museum to visit founded by Richard Pell, an associate professor of Electronic and Time-based Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. Their website defines PostNatural History as 1) The study of the origins, habitats, and evolution of organisms that have been intentionally and heritably altered by humans. 2) The record of the influence of human culture on evolution. Advancement of knowledge relating to the complex interplay between culture, nature, and biotechnology. Our mission is to acquire, interpret, and provide access to a collection of living, preserved, and documented organisms of postnatural origin.”

We, humans, have been manipulating plants, animals etc. for centuries and this is the first museum devoted to documenting these alterations. The subject matter is broad covering topics such as GMO crops (Monsanto corn), Military technology (Biosteel goats), evolution, agriculture, transgenic animals for research, selective breeding among others. Topics are covered in a professional, neutral fashion.

This tiny museum has sent exhibits to tour Europe and has been featured on NPR, National Geographic, and the highly regarded Nature journal among others.

Address: 4913 Penn Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15224

Admission Fee: None, donations to the museum are welcome.

Introduction to Watercolors
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Image result for watercolors

In this 4-session series taught by Melissa Tai, you'll learn basic techniques and explore the medium in a relaxed environment. Bring a photo or small object for inspiration. We will discuss composition, perspective and color. Each class starts with a demonstration. Pursue your own interests, at your own pace with my guidance and support; I emphasize learning rather than finished projects. Supplies are provided but feel free to bring your own if you'd like. The series is $75 and a preregistration payment in-person is required.

In order for this class to run, we'll need a minimum of 5 students to register. If we don't get enough students and you've registsered, you'll be refunded your payment.

Instructor Bio: Melissa is an adult taught artist.  She has studied under many accomplished artists.  A life-long creative, she has always found vents for her creativity: writing, crafting, gardening, cooking (no recipes here), and the list goes on.  For professional endeavors, she chooses watercolor.  She loves to take advantage of the flow and freedom of wet into wet.  Then allow it to dry to get more detailed.

Melissa can be found teaching at a number of venues in and around Pittsburgh.  She fancies herself very approachable, recognizing that there are many ‘right’ ways to do things.  Artistic marks are like signatures, unique to the individual.  She likes to introduce creativity to those who either think they can’t or just haven’t experienced the joy yet.  If you are comfortable with your creative chops, she can offer a new project or perspective that will open your eyes to fresh opportunities.

Introduction to Watercolors
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
