Awake at the Library: Citizens Toolkit
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This year, we're launching a new discussion series called Awake at the Library where we'll focus on Compassion, Connection and Community. We're kicking things off with a visit from Public Source: a local nonpartisan, nonprofit, digital-first media organization dedicated to providing public-service reporting and analysis, convening communities of shared interests and connecting civically engaged citizens with local decision makers.

Our first discussion: Fake News. In today’s world of increasingly partisan and vitriolic politics, the words fake news get thrown around a lot. But what does the phrase mean? What is fake news and where does it come from? Who creates it and how does it spread? How can you know what you’re hearing and reading is accurate and true? This discussion will take you inside the wild world of fake news and give you the tools you need to combat it.

Awake at the Library: Human Library
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This year, we're launching a new discussion series called Awake at the Library where we'll focus on Compassion, Connection and Community. We're kicking things off with a visit from Public Source: a local nonpartisan, nonprofit, digital-first media organization dedicated to providing public-service reporting and analysis, convening communities of shared interests and connecting civically engaged citizens with local decision makers.

Our third discussion: The Human Libraryan initiative for social change based on the power of a person’s story. It is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and reduce stigma through dialogue. We believe people, like books, are rich sources of knowledge with the ability to change the lives of those who engage with them. Similar to the way a reader learns and grows through reading a book, folks listening to a community member’s life experience learn and grow. With the Human Library, we organize events where people share their experiences living with and in recovery from behavioral health issues with individuals and community groups. The name Human Library comes from a project started in Denmark that has grown tremendously as people invest in the power of people’s stories.

Hygge (pronounced Hue-ga) is the newest buzzword in relaxation and lifestyle. Hygge is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or a moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out and about, ordinary or extraordinary, as cozy, charming or special. We're ready to get our Hygge on here at the library. Of course, we want to learn a little about it too. Join us for a full-on night of Hygge with Eva Robinson from the Royal Danish Consulate of Pittsburgh. We'll be getting cozy with various gentle and soothing things like candles, cocoa and blankets so be sure to wear something comfy (slippers are encouraged!) Adults 18+ for this ultra-delightful evening. The fire will be lit so join us to learn something from the culture that boasts the happiest people in the world!

We'll have paper, pens, pencils but feel free to bring your own supplies if you have some you especially like working with. This is a casual group of people who enjoy doodling. We might try some intentional, assignment-based doodling but this will be a laid-back group for chatting, scrawling, sipping a cuppa and chilling-out on a cold winter night at the library. We'll meet 4 consecutive Thursdays - come for all or some. 18+ for this group.

Awake at the Library: Human Library
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This year, we launched a new discussion series called Awake at the Library where we're focusing on Compassion, Connection and Community. We kicked things off in January with a visit from Public Source where we talked about fake news. In February, we had a rousing discussion about

This month, for our third discussion we're looking to The Consumer Health Coalution and their Human Library Project, an initiative addressing the stigmas around mental health th rough dialogue. Through the power of a person’s stor, the project builds a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes. The organization believes people, like books, are rich sources of knowledge with the ability to change the lives of those who engage with them. Similar to the way a reader learns and grows through reading a book, folks listening to a community member’s life experience learn and grow. With the Human Library, they organize events where people share their experiences living with and in recovery from behavioral health issues with individuals and community groups. The name Human Library comes from a project started in Denmark that has grown tremendously as people invest in the power of people’s stories.

Join us for what has become a potent international movement.
