Awake at the Library: Human Library
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Our 3rd session in our Awake at the Library series where we're focusing on Compassion, Connection and Community: the Human Libraryan initiative coming from the Consumer Health Coalition for social change based on the power of a person’s story. Designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and reduce stigma through dialogue, this project supports the idea that people, like books, are rich sources of knowledge with the ability to change the lives of those who engage with them. Similar to the way a reader learns and grows through reading a book, folks listening to a community member’s life experience learn and grow. Through the Human Library, people share their experiences living with and in recovery from behavioral health issues with individuals and community groups. The Human Library project originated in Denmark and has grown tremendously as people all over the world invest in the power of individual's stories.

Film Noir Lecture Series
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Image result for film noir classics

Film noir is a mode of filmmaking that defined a short-lived moment of Hollywood films. While most of the films from this period that are now considered classics, were B movies at the time, the sharp eyes of French critics who saw them after WWII helped crystalize the stylistic elements that pushed them to become part of one of the most recognizable American film genres. Presented by Dr. Anthony Hayt, this six week course, will explore the defining aspects of film noir including its stylistic roots in German Expressionism; its thematic roots in American hardboiled fiction of the 20s, 30s, and 40s; and its legacy throughout the last 70years. We'll be watching and discussing: Double Indemnity (1944), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Chinatown (1974), Blade Runner (1982), and Blue Velvet (1986) all on the library's newly installed top-notch AV equipment.

Dr. Hayt received his Masters in English from SUNY Buffalo in 2006 with the thesis ‘In a Lonely Place: The Rubble Between Binaries’ and his PhD in English from the University of Oregon with the dissertation Remade in Our Image: Gender, Melodrama, and Conservatism in Post-9/11 Slasher Remakes. He is the author of the article ‘Moving Past the Trauma:? Feminist Criticism and Transformations of the Slasher Genre.’ His academic interests include Feminist Theory, Gender Theory, Genre Theory, Horror Film, Independent Film, Popular and Hollywood Film. After teaching at the university level for nearly a decade, he is now the co-founder and Head of Business Development of Maaterra Biotechnology.

Awake at the Library: The Immigrant Experience
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for the 4th installment in our Awake at the Library series where we spend the evening focusing on Compassion, Connection and Community. This month, we're talking about what it's like to immigrate to the US. We have some wonderful stories to share from those who came to the US long ago and some more recently. Immigration is a topic many of us read about these days, but few of us know intimately. Tonight you'll have a chance to expand your understanding of what might draw someone to the US and what it's like to move here from a very different country. We'll have some food from the countries represented (food is always a good bridge toward understanding!) and, as always, a time for deep conversation.

Awake at the Library: OnBeing
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Our 5th session in our Awake at the Library series where we're focusing on Compassion, Connection and Community; we're going back to where it all began, with the OnBeing Podcast. We'll listen to one of the most thought-provoking episodes and follow it up with an engaging conversation emphasizing generous listening, adventurous civility and hospitality. Join us!

"Love the questions themselves, as if they were locked rooms of  books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." - Rainer Maria Rilke

NEXT MONTH: We'll be talking together about homelessness. An art exhibit, Walk on By, will be on display at the library and we'll have a chance to hear from one of the artists as part of our conversation.
