Revolutionary Princeton, 1774-1783: The Biography of an American Town in the Heart of a Civil War
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The story of Princeton between 1774 and 1783 is a microcosm of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans during the Revolution, struggles intensified by Princeton’s geographic location within the State which saw more military activity than most and on a road constantly used to move troops and their supplies. Life in Princeton connected to just about every aspect of the Revolution. The stories of people who lived in Princeton, or who spent time there because of the Revolution, helps us better understand the hitherto untold importance of this town beyond the one, well-known, day of battle. This case study of a small New Jersey town located at the crossroads of the Revolution reveals the very human consequences, costs, and benefits of the war experienced by “ordinary” people.

Presented by Larry Kidder, a retired history teacher who taught for 40 years, including 32 years at The Hun School of Princeton. Larry has been a volunteer historian and historical interpreter for the Howell Living History Farm in Hopewell for over 30 years and is a member of the board of the Princeton Battlefield Society. The author of two books on rural New Jersey history and three on aspects of the American Revolution in Mercer County, Larry is a frequent speaker throughout New Jersey.

Co-sponsored with Hopewell Valley Historical Society and The Hopewell Museum.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Abandoned Ruins on Public Lands in New Jersey: Forgotten and Unknown Pasts
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Scattered throughout New Jersey are remnants of history that are being reclaimed by nature or destroyed by vandals. In this program, author and photographer, Kathleen Butler, will take you on a journey back through time to rediscover the little-known history of these forgotten places. Most are deep in the woods of New Jersey; one is only known to the author.

Discover ruins from iron-making industries, mills, the railroad, and more. Some of the ruins are from industries that were at their peak, but fell hard when the market was no longer in their favor. They ultimately abandoned their businesses, or they rediscovered another market and moved elsewhere. Some companies tried to establish themselves only to find that the area was not suitable, leaving their failed community behind, or simply went bankrupt. Now, nature is taking over, and soon, these abandoned ruins will disappear forever. Here's your chance to learn about them before they are gone!

Monday Morning Book Club: I'll Take You There by Wally Lamb
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

This month's title is I'll Take You There by Wally Lamb.

"Lamb's previous work has been quite sensitive to women, painting endearing portraits of female characters who have been ignored, shamed and often mistreated. He builds on that tradition in I'll Take You There, a love letter to feminism and to trailblazing women-real and imagined-who have graced the silver screen or stood behind the camera." ~ Book Page

Understanding Social Security
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Social Security is the single most common element of most Americans' retirement plans. But it's also one of the least understood. Contrary to popular belief, it is not as simple as hitting a magic age and having checks arrive in the mail. (For example, did you know that there are 567 ways for a couple to claim Social Security?) It is important to plan ahead. This workshop provided by William M. Greenfield of Wealth Bridge Advisory, LLC, will review how the program works and how and when you should utilize your benefits. Claiming strategies, spousal benefits, survivor benefits, and more will be reviewed.

The Irish in the Civil War
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The American Civil War is Ireland's forgotten conflict. In 1860, about 1.5 million Irish were living in the United States. During the American Civil War, some 150,000 Irish men fought in the Union Army and about 20,000 joined and fought with the Confederacy. Although there is no exact figure for the Irish fatalities, it is presumed to be in the thousands. Sadly, the contributions and experiences of the great number of Irish soldiers remain relatively unknown. Join historical reenactor and lecturer Michael Jesberger for a presentation on these "Sons of Erin" who played a major role in the American Civil War.

Cunard Steamships and the Quest for the Perfect Coal
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

At the turn of the 20th century, North Atlantic steamers were prodigious consumers of coal, and not just any coal would do. Dennis Waters tells the story of the search for the perfect coal and how it powered the fleet of the fabled Cunard Line during the Gilded Age.
