Embroidery Circle: Stitching Clinic

Bring in a piece of fabric, and learn to make basic as well as advanced stitches, including: straight, back, split, stem, chain, blanket, fill, and French knot.

The clinic is designed for beginners who would like to learn basic embroidery stitches or brush up on their stitching.

Please bring light-colored cotton fabric, size 8½ x 11 inches or larger. Feel free to bring your own embroidery hoops, embroidery floss thread, and stitching needles if you have them. Embroidery hoops, 6-strand cotton floss thread, and stitching needles are provided by the Friends of the Hickory Corner Library.

Black History Month Presentation: The Life and Legacy of Jack Sherrod

PTSD Support & Meditation

Marvlyn Vincent endured a childhood of abuse. After years of struggling to put her past behind her, Marvlyn finally found a combination of methods to alleviate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She then started The Harmony Place, a non-profit organization dedicated to offering PTSD healing to others who suffer from the effects of trauma and PTSD. The weekly sessions provide peer support and meditation in a group setting, offering strength, a shoulder, and an ear.

Marvlyn Vincent endured a childhood of abuse. After years of struggling to put her past behind her, Marvlyn finally found a combination of methods to alleviate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She then started The Harmony Place, a non-profit organization dedicated to offering PTSD healing to others who suffer from the effects of trauma and PTSD. The weekly sessions provide peer support and meditation in a group setting, offering strength, a shoulder, and an ear.

Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey’s Central Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage

Carol Levin will portray Lillian Feickert, who was president of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association from 1912-1920, and will explore the overlooked role of New Jersey in the long, frustrating fight for women’s suffrage. Hear stories of suffrage advocates Lucy Stone and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul and how Dr. Florence Spearing Randolph brought black women into the movement. Participants will learn that women were not “given” the vote, but fought for it for generations.
This program is subsidized by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

1980: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, James Brown. Rated R; 135 minutes. After Jake Blues is release from prison, he and brother Elwood go to visit the old home where they were raised by nuns. They learn the church is no longer supporting the institution and will sell the place to the education authority. The only way to keep the place open is if the $5000 tax on the property is paid within the next 11 days. The brothers want to help and decide to put their blues band back together and raise the the money by staging a big show. As they set off on their "mission from god" they seem to make more enemies than friends along the way.

Poetry Circle: Edna St. Vincent Millay

Edna St. Vincent Millay (1882-1950) was an American lyrical poet, playwright and feminist. Millay was one of the most skillful writers of sonnets in the twentieth century. She was able to combine modernist attitudes with traditional forms creating a unique American poetry. Millay was also known for her riveting readings and performances, her progressive political stances, and her embodiment and description of new kinds of female experience and expression. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923 for "The Ballad of the Harp Weaver". Her 1920 collection "A Few Figs From Thistles" drew controversy for its exploration of female sexuality and feminism. Registration is suggested.

You may have heard about the spotted lanternfly, an invasive and destructive insect that has been popping up in Mercer County and around the state. Join Mercer County Park Commission Senior Land Steward, Jillian Stark, to investigate the spotted lanternfly's life history and impact, exploring the latest information from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Insect Lab. Learn what is being done to mitigate the damage done by this pest and what you can do in your own backyard to defend against it. Marvlyn Vincent endured a childhood of abuse. After years of struggling to put her past behind her, Marvlyn finally found a combination of methods to alleviate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She then started The Harmony Place, a non-profit organization dedicated to offering PTSD healing to others who suffer from the effects of trauma and PTSD. Stop the Bleed

The Stop the Bleed initiative was created after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings by the American College of Surgeons, and others.  This 1-hour class will teach you how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and intervene effectively.  No matter how fast the arrival of a first responder, whether to an accident scene, a mass shooting, or other act of violence, bystanders will always be first on the scene.  A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, so it’s important to know how to quickly STOP THE BLEED.  Registration is required.  Class size is limited.
