A Civil War Christmas

This presentation, accompanied by a slideshow, discusses the experiences of the Civil War soldier during the Christmas seasons of 1861 - 1865. Away from home, soldiers celebrated the season in different ways together in camp on the march and on the battlefield. The program will also discuss how Christmas was celebrated in the Civil War period on the home-front and the many differences in relation to how the holiday is celebrated today. Come join historical reenactor, lecturer and tour guide Michael Jesberger for a discussion on one of our favorite holidays and traditions.

Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Branch, Friends of the West Windsor Branch, Friends of the Hopewell Branch, Friends of the Hickory Corner Branch, and the Hightstown Library Association.

Practicing mindfulness- experiencing the present moment without judgment – can help you manage stress and improve your quality of life. Join Carolyn Schindewolf, Health Educator with Penn Medicine Princeton Health Community Wellness, for a discussion and practice on using mindfulness to stop brain chatter and habitual reactions, improve mood and energy, increase focus and mental clarity, and deepen your enjoyment and appreciation of life.

Side Effects of Cancer Therapies: Chemotherapy, Hormonal Therapy, and Immunotherapy

Drs. Maqsood Amjad and Philip A. Pancari, from Astera Cancer Care, address the toxicities and side effects of cancer therapies, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, target treatments, and oral cancer drugs. Participants will learn what to look for with these therapies and how to lessen these toxicities.

Quilting Through the Centuries: Women’s Life and History in America

Quilting is one of the oldest forms of women’s crafting. Discover how the history of quilting in the United States mirrors the history of women from colonial times to today. Learn about Liberty Hall’s women and view some of Liberty Hall’s oldest quilts. This program will be presented by Hannah Gaston, a Coordinator of School Programs at Kean University's Liberty Hall Museum.

Determine if you are eligible to become a U.S. citizen, learn about the Form N-400 and what you will need to apply for Naturalization, and practice for the reading, writing, and civics tests you will need to pass during your interview.

The pagan Scandinavian and Germanic people of northern Europe celebrated a twelve-day "midwinter" (winter solstice) holiday called Yule (also called Jul, Julblot, jólablót, midvinterblot, julofferfest). Join Jeff Kampf from Lifelong Cognition, as he enthusiastically teaches attendees about the evolution of Christmas and winter holiday traditions through history, music, and travel.

Join this one-hour virtual session to learn about the history of the medical marijuana program in New Jersey, the summary of the rules and regulations that were released by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, and what residents can expects when/with legal adult cannabis use in the State.

Presenter Sarah Trent practiced law as a public defender working at the Legal Aid Society before founding Valley Wellness - a company that applied for a medical dispensary permit in the August, 2019 Request for Application from the New Jersey Department of State. In 2020, Sarah founded New Jersey Cannabis Certified - a NJ specific cannabis education and job training program through a partnership with Raritan Valley and Mercer County and Atlantic Cape Community Colleges. She is the Secretary of the New Jersey State Bar Association's Cannabis Law Committee, is a NORML Legal Committee Member, and a member of the International Cannabis Bar Association. She graduated from the University of Miami, Florida, obtaining both her B.A. and J.D. She grew up in West Windsor, NJ, and currently lives in Morris County.

Plant-based Diets Save Hearts and Homes: Small Actions, Big Changes

The effects of eating more plant-based foods far exceed the well-known nutritional benefits on one’s health. Research shows that eating a more plant-based diet can also lower carbon footprint and global warming. The aim of this session is to discuss why and how we can eat more plant-based foods.

Presented by Het Desai-Shah, who completed her bachelors and graduate school at Rutgers University. She majored in Nutritional Sciences with a focus in dietetics during her undergraduate years. She completed her doctorate work in Nutrition Nutritional Sciences, focusing on increasing community education on healthy eating and physical activity behaviors, especially among those with limited resources.

The Revolutionary World of a Free Black Man: Jacob Francis, 1754-1836 (VIRTUAL)

Born in Amwell Township to a free Black mother, Jacob Francis lived his 82-year life in a world of revolutionary change. He became caught up in the rising tide of revolution in the 1760s and 70s and served in the Continental Army, including at the Battle of Trenton, and then the New Jersey militia. Establishing himself as a farmer, he married an enslaved woman named Mary, freed her and they raised their eight children in the vicinity of Flemington during a period of rising interest in abolition. The story of Jacob Francis and his family provides us with an inside view of life in New Jersey in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the revolutionary changes affecting the lives of both free and enslaved Black people. Co-sponsored with The Hopewell Museum and the Hopewell Valley Historical Society.

Never before had so many people of all backgrounds read the thoughts of African Americans and embraced the black community’s productions, expressions, and style in art, literature, music, dance, and theater. This talk will introduce you to many of the inspired artists who produced astonishing and ground-breaking works.
