This evening there will be a virtual talk via Zoom with historian Bob Begin, who will tell us the wrenching story about the loss of the Indianapolis in the Pacific during World War II. She had delivered the Atomic Bomb to an island air base and was en route to the Phillippines when she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Over 900 men went into the water. They would spend four and one half days before being spotted by a recon plane. They would face numerous challenges and danger such as dehydration, exposure, hypothermia, dementia, and a complete breakdown of rank and discipline, and a most primal enemy....sharks! When the rescue efforts were over, only 317 men were alive. When the public learned of this tragedy, there was a huge uproar. This is a story of some very brave men and their courage, loss of hope, and a cover-up. Please join us for a fascinating historical program with a very knowledgeable speaker. A question and answer period will follow the talk.
Mr. Begin is an avid history fan and devotes his research to interesting and inspiring topics from American chronology. People really enjoy his acessible and enthusiastic programs!
Please register in advance for this program here and once signed up, a Zoom link will be Emailed to you. For questions, please Email jhlady@ocln.org.
This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.
