War and Remembrance on the Alabama Gulf Coast

On Display at the West Regional Branch.

Created by the Center for the Study of War and Memory at the University of South Alabama, "War and Remembrance on the Alabama Gulf Coast" tells the story of local war memorials, including those that hide in plain sight.

One section of the display introduces the topic of war remembrance and equips viewers with a set of questions to ask whenever they encounter examples of public commemoration. The rest of the exhibit examines specific memorials, including those at Fort Blakeley, Fort Mims, and the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.

Many of the photographs featured in the display come from the vast Gulf Coast history collections housed in the USA McCall Library.

Meet the Author - Miriam C. Davis
    6:30 PM

    True Crime in New Orleans

From 1910 to 1919, New Orleans suffered at the hands of its very own Jack the Ripper-style killer. The story has been the subject of websites, short stories, novels, a graphic novel, and most recently the FX television series American Horror Story.

Come meet Miriam C. Davis as she introduces her latest work, The Axeman of New Orleans: The True Story. It's the true story of a serial killer who targeted Italian grocers in the second decade of the twentieth century, and of two men who were wrongly convicted of one of the murders by corrupt officials with coerced testimony.

Recently, the book received a favorable mention in the New York Times Book Review. Booklist gave it a starred review and called it “a riveting story of a serial killer investigation long before … the term ‘serial killer’ was invented.”

Miriam C. Davis has a PhD in history and is the author of Dame Kathleen Kenyon, a biography of the most important female archeologist of the twentieth century. She lectures for Smithsonian Journeys and lives in Montgomery, Alabama.

There will be a book signing following the presentation. For more information, please call 251-208-7097.

Extravagant Readers - Adult Book Club
    3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

This month's topic of discussion is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.

Summary: On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy.
