Teen MakerLAB: Mousebots
6:15 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for a special session taught by parts and crafts makers: Make Your Own Mousebot! Make a sensing bot with motors and switches!  This workshop will walk you through a simple circuit, building a simple machine that can explore, change direction, and respond to basic stimuli. Build one and take it home!

Art In Spring: Oil Pastels inspired by Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall - Scene de Cirque (1958)Join us for Marc Chagall inspired drawing with oil pastels & watercolor resist.

Known for dreamlike subject matter in rich colors, Chagall composed his images based on emotional and poetic associations, rather than on rules of pictorial logic. Artist Emily Pechet will discuss Chagall’s influences and style while instructing participants in creating their own Chagall-inspired works of art.

Greg Hopkins Sextet + 1: 20th Anniversary Celebration

Greg Hopkins Sextet + 1This concert will celebrate the great American music of Duke Ellington and his long time musical alter-ego Billy Strayhorn. Greg Hopkins has arranged 12 classic and obscure pieces of Ellington and Strayhorn for the Sextet + 1. The Greg Hopkins Sextet + 1 is an all-star jazz ensemble made up of truly world class musicians who have played nationally and internationally and now live in the New England area.

The band members include:

  • Greg Hopkins - trumpet, Flugelhorn, and arrangements
  • Shannon LeClarie - Alto sax, Flute
  • Arnie Krakowski - Tenor Sax
  • Jeff Galindo - Trombone
  • Tim Ray - Piano
  • Paul Del Nero - Bass
  • Yoron Israel - Drums

These musicians have traveled the world with luminaries such as Buddy Rich, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Horace Silver, Amad Jamal, Lonny Smith, Herb Pomeroy, Phil Woods, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others.

Over There! WWI Centennial Celebration
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

On April 6, 1917, Natick and the rest of the United States entered the Great War to “make the world safe for democracy.” Come to this special early release day event to find out more about the war, and the town’s part in it.

  • Special Xbox games get you into the battlefields of “the war to end all wars.” (Rated M for mature – junior high and older, please).
  • Learn more about the honor roll that commemorates those from Natick who served in WWI.
  • See the “Legacy of Service” photos featuring WWI veterans, posters, and other items from the period.

The event is free, and refreshments will be served.

9th Annual Poetry Slam

Morse Institute Library poetry slam

Join The Morse Institute Library for an evening of fast-paced competitive poetry! Presented by Geof Hewitt, this annual event invites local poets to the stage to share their original work for a chance to win prizes and take the title for their age category. 

What is a slam?

A slam is a competitive event where poets perform their own work and are judged by the audience.

Who can slam?

If you’re ready to stand in front of an audience and read your original work, you can slam.

What are the rules? 

  • Poets must arrive at 6:45 pm to register. Poets should bring two original poems that can be performed in 3 minutes or less.
  • This program is for all ages with two age levels of competition: Dr. Seuss, age 14 and under, The Dickenson, ages 15 and older.
  • Poems must be appropriate for all ages.
  • No registration required for audience participation.

Will there be prizes?

A 1st place prize will be awarded for each age category. Every participant will receive a certificate of participation.

Geof HewittAbout the Presenter

Geof Hewitt started publishing poems in 1966. He became Vermont's Poetry Slam Champion in 2004 (winning by one-tenth of a point). A Vermont championship has not been held since, so he tirelessly boasts that he is "Vermont's Reigning Slam Champ." Geof served for 21 years as Writing Consultant for the Vermont Department of Education, and now offers writing workshops for teachers and students throughout New England. He also teaches for Union Institute & University's undergraduate B.A. program. His recent books include Hewitt's Guide to Slam Poetry and Poetry Slam (Discover Writing Press, 2005), which won the Mom's Choice Award in 2008, and The Perfect Heart: Selected and New Poems (2010).

Henri Matisse 2D Collage Art
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Henri Matisse - Apollo (1953)

Make your own cut paper collage inspired by the French artist Henri Matisse. We will look at some of the famous cut-outs created by Matisse and his contemporaries when he lived in France. This workshop will begin with oil pastel drawing and finish with cutting paper and gluing designs. Each student will get to choose the size of their composition and have a beautiful cut-out finished by the end of the workshop to take home and frame!

Let's create and have fun together! All materials included in the workshop. All ages are welcome although children must be accompanied by an adult.  All experience levels welcome.

WWI at 100 Movie: All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western FrontFirst released in 1930, All Quiet on the Western Front is a realistic look at life and death in the trenches during World War I and remains one of the greatest war films ever made.

Watercolor en Plein Air

Tree watercolor

Get inspired by the trees and flowers in bloom in this watercolor workshop. If the weather is nice enough we will head out to the front lawn to paint and experience the colors of nature.
