This month, Susanna Ernst is our guest speaker. Ernst is a fifth generation Mishawakan and resident of Hooligan Heights for 18 years. She is the founder and current president of the Northwest Chicago Historical Society. Ernst will be presenting Hooligan Heights: Mishawaka's Wild West. This far west side neighborhood of Mishawaka was colloquially dubbed “Hooligan Heights” in the 1920s due to its rough-and-tumble reputation. Hooligan Heights’ history of racially restrictive covenants, federal housing policy and subsequent urban renewal tells the tale of Mishawaka’s Wild West.
