A 45 minute program for a two-year-old and adult working together. Learn fingerplays and songs, listen to a fun book, play the matching game, learn some sign language and enjoy a simple craft together.   Due to fire code regulations, please bring only the child who is registered for the program accompanied by one adult.  All registrants will be placed on a Waiting List.  You will receive an email confirmation when there is a space available in the program for your child.  Preference will be given to children who have not previously had an opportunity to participate in the program.

Book Trading Cards

Children in grades 2-6 are invited to join us to create "book trading cards". Come prepared with the author and title (as well as a copy of the book if possible) of several of your favorite books.  We will design the cards which will then be traded among the participants.  This is a great way for children to get book recommendations for summer reading.  Registration is limited, and begins on July 1, 2019.

On the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing, view Apollo 11 and relive one of the greatest scientific achievements of the twentieth century. The documentary is made up entirely of archival footage, including 70 mm film that was previously unreleased to the public.

Murder Mystery Party Assassination at the Superhero Assemby

Murder Mystery Party.  Registrtion required.  Registration starts Monday July 8.  Games, Pizza and a Murder Mystery.  Can you solve the crime?  Come as your favorite Superhero.  The superheroes of the Justice Confederation recieve their summons to the Annual Superhero assembly in a secret cave inside of Mount Supper to discuss how to apprehend the notorious villain Da Bomb.  However, during the evening  one of the heroes suddenly collapses and dies!  Who is the murderer?

Children and Teens reveal hidden clues, solve baffling riddles, unlock buried secrets, follow mysterious trails, and overcome challenging obstacles to recover a priceless alien treasure! 7 -15 year old Space Cadets build observation, puzzle solving, and research skills as they search for clues that lead to the lost treasure. They employ deductive reasoning, find and utilize knowledge about outer space, work cooperatively, and track down books of all different kinds - all by themselves! Everyone has their own items to find and proceeds at their own pace. So EVERYONE SUCCEEDS, and helps to uncover the alien treasure! The History of the English Language

This book is a graphic novel.  Illegal by Eoin Colfer.  Action-filled and engaging but considerate of both topic and audience, Ebo's story effectively paints a picture of a child refugee's struggle in a world crisscrossed by hostile borders.   Copies of this will be at the Circulation Counter.  This is another in the Battle of the Books series.

We'll learn how to look through binoculars to spot our many feathered friends. Make sure to apply any bug spray you need before we head out, since they are also part of our local wildlife and might want to tag along with you!

Space technology starts with an exploration of space related technologies used on Earth.  Students will help guide laser light through a maze, use principles of radar technology to find hidden mountains, and discover the importance of points of reference to depth perception.  From there, its's out into space with the launch of a satellite into orbit (at the edge of their table) and an examination of potential threats to spacecraft.  Children will leave revved up by an investigation of shuttle fuel.

In Space Phenomena, students will explore the phenomenal events that take place in the night sky such as asteroids, meteors, meteorites and comets.  Children will create they own impact craters and observe model meteors fall through a model atmosphere.  After a friendly game of satellite tag, designed to teach students about reflected light, students watch a model comet form right before their eyes.  Students will make a small telescope to take home with them.

Ellis Island: Island of Hope, Island of Tears: Part Two

Part 2 will include photos of the island’s limited access south side, the unrestored Ellis Island Immigrant General Hospital Complex and Contagious Disease Hospital, in addition to pictures of the recently opened (May 16, 2019) Statue of Liberty Museum. Hear the stories of the patients, nurses, and doctors who worked at the hospital and what they had to cope with. Lecture will also include actual immigrant pictures and stories of both sadness and joy. The lecture concludes with a short history and slides of the Statue of Liberty, both past and present.

Hike and History: Sandyfields and St. Johns in the Wilderness

Sandyfield was a settlement that was submerged when the swampy Beaver Pond was dammed to create Lake Welch in Harriman State Park by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. The historic St. John's in the Wilderness was built in 1880, and still holds services today. Learn about the families and history of Sandyfield and the people who have attended St. John's. This will be a 4-mile hike over uneven ground with changes in elevation. Registration starts Friday, September 13th at 9am. Receive additional instructions upon registering. American Sign Language for Kids

Kids in grades 3-6 may join us for this 5 week course in American Sign Language.  We'll learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, places, food and how to ask questions.  We'll practice with each other, but you'll need to practice at home too!  American Sign Language (ASL) is used by both Deaf persons and Hard-of-Hearing persons and is now counted as a "foreign language" credit in many colleges.  Come learn a fun new way to communicate!

A program designed for a three-year-old and adult working together.  We'll explore a different theme each week through a variety of fun activities including: fingerplays, songs, sign language, books, science activities, crafts and take home materials in order to reinforce the concepts learned.  We'll pull an item each week out of the "Surprise Bag" and explore the topic together.   Due to fire code regulations, please bring only the child accompanied by one adult who is registered for the program.

Hike and History: Sterling Forest

Did you know the Great Chain that was placed across the Hudson River to prevent the British from sailing upriver during the American Revolution was manufactured at Sterling Forest?  Join guide Doc Bayne for an approximately 4 mile, moderately paced hike to the site of the forge where links of the chain that saved the American colonies were made. This is a hike on uneven terrain with changes in elevation.  Registration starts Friday, September 20th at 9am. Receive additional instructions upon registering. Call 845-634-4997 x123 to register.

American Sign Language for Kids

Kids in grades 3-6 may join us for this 5 week course in American Sign Language.  We'll learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, places, food and how to ask questions.  We'll practice with each other, but you'll need to practice at home too!  American Sign Language (ASL) is used by both Deaf persons and Hard-of-Hearing persons and is now counted as a "foreign language" credit in many colleges.  Come learn a fun new way to communicate!

Come read to Buster and his friends!  Certified therapy dogs and their handlers will be on hand to help new readers, struggling readers and those children who just want to read to the dogs.  Therapy dogs don't judge how well you read, they are just happy to listen--which is great for practicing those reading skills without the judgment of a teacher or parent.  Each child is given a 15 minute time slot.
