Book Buddies with Mrs B
4:30 PM - 5:15 PM

This book club is for New City/West Nyack library members in grades K & 1. Each month, we will read a book during our meeting, make a craft related to the story and have a light snack. Mrs B will read aloud and participants will follow along in their copies of the book, which are provided at the session. Children should be registered monthly for those sessions convenient for your family. Noone is pressured to read aloud or ever put on the spot and books do not need to be read beforehand. The goal of this program is to engage children with books so they enjoy reading. Hope to see you there!

This month's book is "Silly Tilly's Thanksgiving Dinner" by Lillian Hoban. We'll be making candle holder centerpieces for your table!

Share Listen Learn: Remembering the Kennedy Assassination
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

In observance of The National Day of Listening, the New City Library will present Remembering November 22, 1963: A conversation about the the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.  Brian Jennings will moderate a discussion with David Beisel and Richard Connolly about their memories of the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The discussion will focus on what, how and why we remember this tragic event.  The program will include selected transcriptions from the library’s oral history collection that highlight local residents’ memories of that day. Audience members will have opportunities to share their own recollections and add them to the library’s oral history archive.

David R. Beisel, a psychohistorian and historian of Germany, was Professor of Social Sciences at SUNY–RCC, where he taught for more than 40 years, instructing over 6,000 students and winning the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Richard Connolly is a college teacher, writer, editor, publisher and producer. For 15 years (1998-2012), he was Chair of the Communication Media Arts Program at SUNY-RCC, where he teaches courses in cultural history, media production and media history.

The National Day of Listening is an unofficial day of observance where Americans are encouraged to set aside time to record the stories of their families, friends, and local communities. The National Day of Listening was first launched by the national oral history project StoryCorps in 2008 and now recurs on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, when families are more likely to spend time together. It was proposed as an alternative to "Black Friday," a day many businesses see as a high volume pre-Christmas sale day.

Nyack Record Shop Project with Bill Batson
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Bill Batson will share highlights from the Nyack Record Shop Project, an oral history in which organizers collected oral histories from the African American community for a week. The original portion of the project was launched on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday - January 15, 2018. This winter, a new round of oral histories are being collected as the archive of oral histories continues to thrive.

The positive impact of the Nyack Record Shop project is underscored by the numbers: before this project, the Nyack Library had approximately 65 oral histories on file, and of those, only eight were of African Americans. Now there are 92 oral histories in total with 33 from the African American community. According to the 2010 census, Nyack is 23% African American.  Thus, as a result of the Nyack Record Shop project, 30% of the archived oral histories are from the African American community, a rare example of social equity skewing in favor of a marginalized group.

The oral histories collected can be heard at:  https://soundcloud.com/nyackrecordshopproject
