A presentation on Soul Music's history in pop culture focusing on a "Study of the Soul Music Environment" by Harvard Business School for CBS/Columbia Records in 1972. "The Harvard Report" has contributed to a powerful era, musically, while controversially contributing to the demise of Stax Records in the mid-1970s and Motown being sold to Boston Ventures/MCA Records in the 1980s, enriching corporate America's distribution-control of Black Music.
Schuyler Traughber has worked as a road musician, arranger, producer and label executive for We Produce/Stax Records, CBS Records, Motown Records as well as U.S. Business Rep for King Records/MCA, Tokyo. After fifteen years as a Music Business/Management faculty member at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Sky currently resides in Gloucester and is co-author of an upcoming book: "POWER 101, The Harvard Report, Soul Music, & The American Dream."

Join maritime researcher, Jon Johansen for an evening discussion on Shipwrecks of New Englad.
The only easy mode of transportation back in the 1800s and up until the advent of the automobile and truck was sailing and steam vessels that plied the coast and oceans of the world. Traveling at that time could be dangerous as many of these vessels came to grief along the shores of New England, New York and the Canadian Maritimes. This lecture will cover some of the major disasters starting with the loss of SPARROWHAWK at Orleans, MA in 1626 right up to the loss of the submarine U.S.S. THRESHER off Cape Cod in 1963. Some of the others include: ROYAL TAR (1836), LEXINGTON (1840), ARCTIC (1854), ATLANTIC (1873), CITY OF COLUMBUS (1884), PORTLAND (1898), GENERAL SLOCUM (1904), LARCHMONT (1907), EMPRESS OF IRELAND (1914), and MONT BLANC (1917).

Nicholas Sullivan is an author and senior research fellow at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. His recent book, The Blue Revolution presents a new way of thinking about fish, food, and oceans by profiling the people and policies transforming this industry into one that is “post-industrial”—fueled by “sea-foodies” and locavores interested in sustainable, traceable, quality seafood.

There is something about islands. Their remoteness generates a certain mystique. Even islands inhabited by people have an aura of “away-ness,” and uninhabited ones stimulate visions of hidden treasures of one kind or another. There is also an ecological significance to islands: their plants and animal communities are often different from those of even nearby mainlands; their isolation from other populations promote evolutionary change; and they may act as refuges for certain species because they are hard to reach by predators.
The coastal waters of Essex County from Nahant Bay to Cape Ann are dotted with more than 50 islands ranging in size from small rocky “skerries” which are nearly submerged at high tide to the well-wooded 83 acre Great Misery Island. In 2002 these were formally designated as the Essex County Coastal Birds Islands Important Bird Area, due to their breeding populations of water birds that rarely nest on the mainland, including a number of rare or uncommon species.
Chris Leahy’s illustrated talk will showcase the diverse natural (and cultural) history of the islands.
