Mason Square Jazz Fest
5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This Thursday the Mason Square Branch will transform from quiet library to concert hall. There will be music, amplified, so put down your paperback and join us for some live jazz!

5:30 p.m.: Reception. Local music legend and educator, Billy Arnold, will present his new book, "So, You Want to Be A Musician?"

6:00 p.m.: The Billy Arnold Trio, featuring Billy Arnold on drums, Chris Bakriges on piano, and Jimmy Daggs on bass

7:00 p.m.: The Khalif Neville Trio, featuring Khalif Neville on keyboard, Ian Haus on drums, and Hiroyuki Shido on bass

William E. Arnold, Jr. was born into a family of six in South Bend, Indiana. He started playing bongo drums at the age of 15 and became known as “Bongo Bill.” At 16, he started playing the drums and became known as “Mr. Clean” when he started his career playing with Motown recording artist “Junior Walker and the All Stars.” Billy credits his experiences in the U.S. Army Band as being his “college-conservatory” training. Billy has played with such Jazz greats as Teddy Wilson and Charlie Ventura.

Khalif's musical heritage runs deep; born into the first family of New Orleans music, the Nevilles have long been recognized as ambassadors for the city’s distinctive style of funk, soul and R&B. Khalif spent the first few years of his life steeping in the Crescent City's cultural gumbo, then moved to Western Massachusetts where he began voraciously studying music with his father, Charles Neville. Now in his early twenties, Khalif has earned his stripes as an accomplished pianist, composer, lyricist, and torch bearer of the New Orleans tradition.

Refreshments will be provided at the reception.

Catching the Sun Film Screening
2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

This is not a library-sponsored event.

Through the stories of workers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China, the documentary film "Catching the Sun" captures the global race to lead the clean energy future.  Over the course of a solar jobs training program, the film follows unemployed American workers seeking jobs in the solar industry.  With countries like China investing in innovative technologies and capitalizing on this trillion-dollar opportunity.  "Catching the Sun" tells the story of the global energy transition from the perspective of workers and entrepreneurs building solutions to income inequality and climate change with their own hands.

"Catching the Sun" premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was named a 2016 New York Times Critics' Pick.  It's also part of American Film Showcase, shown at U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions around the world.  The film released globally on Netflix with Executive Producer Leonard DiCaprio on Earth Day 2016.  The film was nominated by the Environmental Media Association for the 2016 EMA Award for Best Documentary.

The Springfield Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby invites you to join us for a viewing of the documentary followed by a discussion.  All are welcome.

Come and join us!  Newcomers are welcome to come early (6 pm) for an introduction to what Citizens' Climate Lobby is and what we do.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Our consistently respectful, non-partisan approach to climate education is designed to create a broad, sustainable foundation for climate action across all geographic regions and political inclinations. By building upon shared values rather than partisan divides, and empowering our supporters to work in keeping with the concerns of their local communities, we work towards the adoption of fair, effective, and sustainable climate change solutions. In order to generate the political will necessary for passage of our Crbon Fee and Dividend proposal we train and support volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community.

Projects, such as drawing from sound, drawing with rubbings, creating an alternate artist identity, and more, emphasize the importance of creation, imagination, and creativity over the need to create a finished product.

Participants are welcome to come over with their parent or guardian right after school. We'll serve snacks from 3:30 to 4:00
