Art Central: Breathing In, Monotypes by Doris Madsen

All Ages | During Open Hours

Doris Madsen, a retired Springfield City Librarian, displays her new art show, Breathing In, for the months of March and April. Her one-of-a-kind contemporary prints include shapes and subjects in various arrangements and from a variety of vantage points to to create a unique blend of color and ideas. Meet the artist on Sunday, March 3rd for the free opening reception.

This program is supported by a grant from the Springfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, and the Friends of the Library.

'King in the Wilderness' a Documentary

Ages 15 and up

Reverend Martin Luther King traveled to Memphis Tennessee to lead a non-violent march in support of sanitation workers quest for a living wage and humane working conditions. On April 4, 1968 Rev. King was murdered on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel. Join us for a free showing of the remarkable 2018 HBO documentary King in the Wilderness.  According the film’s producer the documentary “Chronicles the final chapters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, revealing a conflicted leader who faced an onslaught of criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Dr. King’s unyielding belief in peaceful protest became a testing point for a nation on the brink of chaos.” This event is in partnership with the East Springfield Neighborhood Council, and receives funding from the Friends of the Library.

Note: This film is being shown at the East Springfield Neighborhood Council Building directly behind the Pottenger School at 1476 Carew St. Springfield.

Personal Finance for Teens

Learning about finances can be fun!  Teens will be engaged through a variety of hands-on activities.

  • Teens receive Occupation Cards and observe how different jobs provide different monthly salaries. Based on those monthly salaries, students evaluate the opportunity cost when making budget decisions.
  • Savvy Shopper Students examine how consumers pay for goods and services. They discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using debit and credit cards.

This program is intended for ages 14-18.

Tai Chi for Everyone

April's Tai Chi for Everyone is CANCELLED. The program will resume in May 2019.

Meets on the 1st Saturday of every month | Ages 10 and up

Tai Chi is a slow motion, low impact form of exercise suitable for people of any age. It is often referred to as “moving meditation” and has been practiced in the Far East for thousands of years. Enjoy its graceful flow, and experience the benefits it can bring to balance, coordination, focus, and calm. Class will be instructed by Certified Tai Chi Instructor Dr. Emanuel Brown.

Read to Cadence the Dog

Read to Cadence - Megan Marshall, a volunteer from Bright Spot Reading Buddies, will bring her dog Cadence to the library to have children read to her. She will be at the library the first Saturday of each month, starting January 5, from 11:30am-12:20pm.

Kids ages 4-10 will sign up for a 10 minute slot to read to her friendly, furry companion. Bring a favorite picture book or a chapter book to read to Cadence. This program is designed to help kids gain confidence and reduce anxiety about reading.

Genealogy for Beginners

Do you want to know more about your family's history, but don't know where to begin? This four week series is the perfect starting point and includes Introduction to Genealogy on April 9, and three other classes focusing on census records (April 16); immigration and migration (April 23); and military, wills, probate, and DNA (April 30). Attend one workshop or all four. Led by genealogist Hillary Schau, this series is perfect for the beginner and is geared toward adults age 60+ and their caregivers.

This project is funded through Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc., the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs and the Federal Administration for Community Living.

Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga is a yoga style that adapts yoga positions and poses while incorporating the use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat, and becomes an extension of the body. The student is able to warm-up the body safely, and perform yoga poses with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair, or the chair is used for support during  poses, bends, extensions, balances, and stretches. Chair yoga is suitable for all fitness levels and physical conditions. Led by Nicole Ferraro, a certified yoga instructor.

Traveling during the warm weather in a 1947 DeSoto, the retirees visited public libraries in 112 Massachusetts communities for their exciting new book “Public Libraries in Western Massachusetts: A Photographic Essay” due out this fall. The Heiligmann’s believe that “Public libraries serve as important threads in the tapestry of community life.”

Do you want to know more about your family's history, but don't know where to begin? This four week series is the perfect starting point and includes Introduction to Genealogy on April 9, and three other classes focusing on census records (April 16); immigration and migration (April 23); and military, wills, probate, and DNA (April 30). Attend one workshop or all four. Led by genealogist Hillary Schau, this series is perfect for the beginner and is geared toward adults age 60+ and their caregivers. This project is funded through Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc., the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs and the Federal Administration for Community Living.

SAT Prep Workshop

Spend your Spring Break with librarians at two of the Springfield City Library branches over Spring Break for some hands-on and FREE SAT prep! We will conduct a practice exam, go over the process of signing up, how the scoring works, what the exam means to colleges, how to break down the essay questions, tips for studying vocab, evidence-based reading challenges, and strategies for solving math problems and multiple choice questions. We will also provide some coping mechanisms for test taking anxiety and methods for boosting test confidence.

There are two sessions:

  • Wednesday, April 17 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Mason Square Branch Library in the Children's Program Room we will conduct a practice exam under timed conditions. Our librarians will analyze the results and prepare a study plan for the students on Friday. If the students are planning on doing the essay portion, they should plan to stay until 1:00. 
  • Friday, April 19th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Library Express at Pine Point we will discuss the areas students should focus on when studying, tactics for preparing for the SAT based on their practice test results, and go over coping mechanisms for test taking anxiety.

And the best part? Two lucky participants will have their fees COMPLETELY covered for the May exam, courtesy of the Mason Square C3 Group! The participants must attend both sessions from start to finish in order to qualify for the raffle. Lunch and beverages will be generously provided courtesy of the Friends of the Springfield City Library.

SAT Prep Workshop

Spend your Spring Break with librarians at two of the Springfield City Library branches over Spring Break for some hands-on and FREE SAT prep! We will go over the process of signing up, how the scoring works, what the exam means to colleges, how to break down the essay questions, tips for studying vocab, evidence-based reading challenges, and strategies for solving math problems and multiple choice questions. We will also provide some coping mechanisms for test taking anxiety and methods for boosting test confidence.

There are two sessions:

  • Wednesday, April 17 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Mason Square Branch Library we will discuss the process of signing up for the exam and the math section
  • Friday, April 19 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Library Express at Pine Point we will discuss the critical thinking and writing portions of the exam, and go over coping mechanisms for test taking anxiety.

And the best part? Two lucky participants will have their fees COMPLETELY covered for the May exam, courtesy of the Mason Square C3 Group! Lunch and beverages will be generously provided courtesy of the Friends of the Springfield City Library.

This four week series is the perfect starting point and includes Introduction to Genealogy on April 9, and three other classes focusing on census records (April 16); immigration and migration (April 23); and military, wills, probate, and DNA (April 30). Meet Your Neighbors: Bhutanese Refugees from Bhutan

From Bergen-Belsen to Springfield a Story of Holocaust Survival and Beyond

Celebrated author Hanna Perlstein Marcus shares the story of her early family history described in two gripping, multiple award-winning books Sidonia's Thread and Surviving Remnant. Hanna Perlstein Marcus was born at the Bergen Belsen displaced persons camp after World War II. At the age of two, she immigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts with her mother, Sidonia. Ms. Marcus and her mother traveled over 3,700 miles from the nightmare of Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp to eventually settle in a mid-century North End Springfield neighborhood.  The family found refuge in Springfield along with other ethnic groups looking for a better future.  Copies of her books will be available for purchase and signing. Refreshments compliments of the Friends of the Library.

Do you want to know more about your family's history, but don't know where to begin? This four week series is the perfect starting point and includes Introduction to Genealogy on April 9, and three other classes focusing on census records (April 16); immigration and migration (April 23); and military, wills, probate, and DNA (April 30). Attend one workshop or all four. Led by genealogist Hillary Schau, this series is perfect for the beginner and is geared toward adults age 60+ and their caregivers.

This project is funded through Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc., the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs and the Federal Administration for Community Living.
