Art Central: Photography of the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club

On display in Art Central through April 27 are photographs of the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club including shots of their many activities and newly redeveloped docking area in the North End. Photographs of their youth lessons and rowing on the Connecticut River, including the perennially popular Dragon Boat Festival and more, give the viewer a fascinating glimpse into some of the many wonderful things they do here in Springfield and beyond.

Foundation Center: Introduction to Finding Funders

This workshop is an overview of the Foundation Center Database, a powerful tool for the nonprofit community, providing access to 90,000+ U.S. foundations, grant making public charities, and corporate givers, with links to over 7,000 grant maker and corporate websites and IRS 990-PF and 990 returns. The workshop will review tips and tricks for searching and how to best use the database’s interface. An introduction to the Grantspace website—another powerful resource for grantmakers—will also be covered. Reserved seating is limited to representatives of area nonprofit and grassroots organizations. Led by librarian Donna Goldthwaite.

Celebrate International Children’s Book Day!  Join us for a special family event featuring local author and educator Katherine Kraver.   A globetrotter who has visited Jordan, Haiti and two dozen other countries, she is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of refugees and hardships that children face across the globe.

She will be reading from her newest book, The Boy with the Red Shoes. This moving story centers on the hardships that a young boy goes through in Haiti whose home and community is destroyed by an earthquake.

The program will also include crafts, a slide show on the author’s travels and writing process, and a book signing.  $1.00 from the sale of each of her books will be donated to The Red Cross to help children.

Poems For Peace

What are the hopes and dreams that all people, everywhere, share? What wishes do you have for our planet and the people who live here? Come to any library during open hours and write a poem or note to your neighbors on earth. Decorate a cutout of a kid just like you, and pass your poem of peace on. We will have some haiku poetry examples if you need some inspiration for your writing. All artwork and notes will be collected and displayed at a special program "I'm Your Neighbor" at the Central Library on Sunday, April 30.

Literary Spotlight: Creative Readings by Local Writers

MedExpress on Boston Road in Springfield will be facilitating the Teddy Bear Clinic. MedExpress Urgent Care's Teddy Bear Clinic, a free community outreach program, teaches children about healthcare treatments and healthy habits. Their warm friendly staff will lead classes and groups of children as they observe and learn about hand washing, X-rays, splinters, and much more. No need for children to bring in their own stuffed friend, their MedExpress employee will bring their own teddy helper to the clinic.

Blackout Poetry

Drop into the library all through April Vacation and turn recycled pages into works of art. We will provide pages from old books, magazines, and other written media. We’ll provide markers. With these tools, you will create works of your own poetry by blacking out words and sentences you don’t want to use. Take your creation home, or give it to us to be displayed in the library. Come in and see an example, and we’ll get you started. But be warned: its addicting! Once you start creating, you might not be able to stop!  During all open hours.

Continuing The Artist's Way Journey

Continuing The Artist's Way Journey

This is an in-depth exploration of the book Finding Water: the Art of Perserverance, by Julia Cameron. It is a thirteen-week series where each week participants will review a chapter and respond with written and/or spoken exercises. The series extends the ideas developed in an earlier workshop series called The Artists' Way, though new and returning members are equally welcomed. The series develops new and aspiring artists by sharpening the artist-spiritual connection, and promises to be a highly personal and exciting journey. Workshops will be led by Phyllis St. George, published poet and editor, and exponent of The Artist’s Way.

Join us at the Mason Square Branch for a night of stargazing!

Alan Rifkin of the Springfield STARS Club will bring telescopes to the branch so that adults and children of all ages can get a close-up look at the craters of the moon, galaxies, satellites, and stars. Learn about telescopes and some basic astronomy! No prior experience necessary.

If it's cloudy or rainy that evening, then Alan will give a presentation in the Community Room on the Great American Solar Eclipse. The eclipse, occurring on August 21st, is the first total eclipse since 1991!

Want to get a job at the casino? MGM Springfield will conduct its hiring using an online program known as SkillSmart. 

Now you can get help setting up a SkillSmart profile in three different library locations! Kat Mangiafico, of Opportunity Services, will hold monthly Skillsmart Registration drop-in sessions at the Central Library's Rice Hall, the Mason Square Branch, and the Sixteen Acres Branch.

Once you have a profile in SkillSmart, you will automatically receive notifications on job openings, educational opportunities, and other important MGM Springfield employment updates.

The series develops new and aspiring artists by sharpening the artist-spiritual connection, and promises to be a highly personal and exciting journey. Continuing The Artist's Way Journey

It is a thirteen-week series where each week participants will review a chapter and respond with written and/or spoken exercises. The series extends the ideas developed in an earlier workshop series called The Artists' Way, though new and returning members are equally welcomed. The series develops new and aspiring artists by sharpening the artist-spiritual connection, and promises to be a highly personal and exciting journey. Workshops will be led by Phyllis St. George, published poet and editor, and exponent of The Artist’s Way.
