The Community Voting Project
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

This is not a library-sponsored event.

WHAT: Why Voting Matters

WHO: People who haven’t voted ever or in the last 4 years

We are the Community Voting Project and are providing a 1.5 hour free workshop to educate US citizenswho have never voted before or whom haven’t voted in the last 4 years on their voting rights, the voting process and basic information about all the candidates.

The Community Voting Project does not endorse any political candidates; we focus on educating people about their voting rights and helping them become active members of the democratic process.

All US citizens have the right to participate in the voting process and we aim to make this simple by removing educational and logistical barriers which sometimes affect people’s ability to vote.

This project is sponsored by the Sojourner Truth School, which promotes civic engagement.

In this presentation we will provide the following:

  1. A hot nutritious meal prior to the presentation starting.
  2. Child Care for participants who have small children.
  3. Information sheets on who and what’s on the ballot
  4. Transportation to the voting polls on November 6th 2018 (election day)
  5. A $50 stipend for each person who voted (this will be verified)
  • People must register for this workshop by calling 413-225-1210 or by sending an email to: TheCommunityVotingProject@gmail.com
  • Please include your name and your phone number in the voicemail or email.

We look forward to helping you vote.

Ever wish you could go back to the days when school meant drawing pictures, and playing with toys? Kindergärtners just don't know how good they have it! Don't worry! Unwind by coming to the library and reliving those days for a little while. Play with Play-dough. Draw pictures. Color. Finger Paint. Build with Legos. Have some fun, and let go of your worries for a little bit.

Ages 18 and up

Have you ever wanted to learn high-tech skills but thought you couldn't? In today's world, e-mail, web browsing, and spreadsheets are just the tip of the iceberg, and more complex skills are increasingly useful even outside of tech careers. If you've ever wanted to make your own website, build your own app, or secure your smartphone against unwanted prying, join us! Our coding club for women is for all women, ages 18 to 98, who want to learn and experiment in a low-pressure, highly collaborative environment.

We can't promise you'll be a "leet hacker", but if you ever wanted to give beyond-the-basic computer skills a try, bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and ideas about what you want to learn, and we'll all teach each other! This is a club for those who enjoy self-directed learning.

Club meets monthly, light snacks provided, please pre-register.

Is It A Good Match? Learning How to Approach and Write to the Right Funders for Your Project
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Many grant proposals are rejected because they are not a good match with the grantmaker. Participants will learn how to identify the good match indicators and how to determine a funder’s problem-solving approach, underlying beliefs, and political ideology. Because this information affects what is presented and emphasized in a proposal, grantseekers will discover how to read between the lines and find the “hook” – the connection between one’s project and a prospective funder – and how to write their proposals in a way that the funder can hear.

An offering of the Sojourner Truth School for Social Change Leadership and the Springfield City Library's Foundation Center Funding Information Network, this class is led by trainer Deborah Koch, Author of How to Say It: Grantwriting: Write ProposalsThat Grantmakers Want to Fund. Deborah Koch is an accomplished trainer, writer, and grantseeker, raising millions of dollars for higher education and community nonprofits, and teaching hundreds of people how to do the same.

"I have to sing. I have to play. The music is...it's not just in me! It is me. When life gets me down, I play my guitar. The rest of the world may follow the rules, but I must follow my heart. You know that feeling, like there's a song in the air and it's playing just for you? A feeling so close you will reach out and touch it? I never knew I could want something so much, but it's true. Never underestimate the power of music!" - Ernesto de la Cruz in Coco

What-Ifs & Fix-Its: A Fanfiction Club for Teens
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month | For teens ages 11-18.

Are you disappointed about the way The Hunger Games ended? Do you think your favorite classic novel would be better if it had dragons? Do you honestly think you can write a better love story than Twilight? Then join us at the East Forest Park Library on the third Wednesday of every month, where pop-culture fans of every kind can explore their favorite characters and create stories of their own, through the marvelous world of fanfiction. We’ll have advice sessions for beginning authors and writing prompts to inspire new ideas—you’ll even have an opportunity to submit your work to the library’s blog!
