Candy Corn Count

See contemporary Cuba through the eyes of photographer Diane Savioli-Chase. Recent trips to the island nation gave her a bevy of beautiful photographs depicting the lives, culture, and traditions of modern day Cuba. Full color photographs of farmers, musicians, school children, urban scenes, and the famous Santiago de Cuba harbor offer a view of the Caribbean’s largest country all in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life -- just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save Sonny's mom and foil Slappy's plan.

Hungry for Books: Early Literacy Workshops for Caregivers

Read to Cadence the Dog

Read to Cadence - Megan Marshall, a volunteer from Bright Spot Reading Buddies, will bring her dog Cadence to the library to have children read to her. She will be at the library the first Saturday of each month from 11:30am-12:20pm.

Kids ages 4-10 will sign up for a 10 minute slot to read to her friendly, furry companion. Bring a favorite picture book or a chapter book to read to Cadence. This program is designed to help kids gain confidence and reduce anxiety about reading.

Art Central Presents Color and Light

Artists of Springfield MA presents "Color and Light", a show of original works by four artists living, working, or contributing to the arts community in Springfield.  Participating artists include illustrator Mary Blaxland, painters Ellen Pollock and José Gamaliel Crespo Rosado, and photographer Wanda Dávila. Included in the display will be the original artwork used to produce Springfield artist notecards, a continuous project that serves to raise the visibility of Springfield artists and promote Springfield’s artist community to the rest of the region. Meet the artists at the free public reception on Sunday, November 3rd from 2-4 p.m.

A Double Dose of Art

Celebrate the art and artists of two newly commissioned art projects in this free public reception. The Springfield Cultural District will reveal the winners of Uplifting, their exciting elevator art project, and Art Central will unveil Color and Light, a new collection of art works created by Artists of Springfield MA.  Representatives from both groups will offer brief presentations of their inspired work, and the featured artists will be on hand to meet the public. Free refreshments are available to all who stay for the unveiling. 

The artists of Color and Light are Mary Blaxland, Ellen Pollock, Jose Gamaliel Crespo Rosado, and Wanda Davila; and the winning artists for Uplifting are Joy Smith, Mariela Chavez, and Ryan Murray.

Chair yoga is a unique form or exercise as it adapts yoga positions while incorporating the use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body while being used to help with both balance and support. The student is able to warm-up the body safely, and perform yoga poses with support and stability. Chair yoga is suitable for all fitness levels and physical conditions. Led by Nicole Ferraro, a certified yoga instructor.

Learn the basics of hand sewing and design through the creation of a small handbag or tote bag. A variety of fabrics and embellishments will be provided to create your customized project. A review and discussion of the evolution of sewing is included. For this beginner sewing program no prior sewing experience is expected or required. This is a recurring monthly program to be held on the fourth Tuesday of September, October, and November.  The program is for adults age 18+

Author Talk: The Arts and Crafts Houses of Massachusetts

Heli Meltsner's new book, The Arts and Crafts Houses of Massachusetts, focuses on the state’s Arts and Crafts architecture. Her talk identifies qualities of this difficult-to-describe movement, and includes discussion of examples found in the Forest Park neighborhood in Springfield.

Heli Meltsner, a historic preservation expert, has served on the Cambridge Historical Society Council and was the Society's Curator. She has also written the book The Poorhouses of Massachusetts: A Cultural and Architectural History

Copies of her new book will be available for purchase following the program.  Adults and Teens 13+.

Stacey "The Bear Lady" Schmeidel, staff at Smith College and volunteer ranger at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska,  will offer an enlightening talk about how hibernation works, what to do if you meet a bear in the woods, and how to keep them out of your trash cans! Join us for a toddler art group every Tuesday morning at the Forest Park Branch Library. Every week, we'll do a new simple craft to get your toddler thinking creatively and using their basic motor skills. It's time to get messy! Ages 2-5. Siblings welcome.

Introduction to Sewing

Learn the basics of hand sewing and design through the creation of a small handbag or tote bag. A variety of fabrics and embellishments will be provided to create your customized project. A review and discussion of the evolution of sewing is included. For this beginner sewing program no prior sewing experience is expected or required. This is a recurring monthly program to be held on the fourth Tuesday of September, October, and November.  The program is for adults age 18+
