Keuka Compass Book Club: SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Read and discuss Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, the best-selling modern coming-of-age novel and basis for the recent hit film Love, Simon!  “Sixteen-year-old Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical.  But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight.  Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: If he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business.  Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing with, will be jeopardized.”  Open to folks aged 18 and older to participate with open minds and hearts; copies are available through the library or at Long’s at a special book club rate.  Sign up for the discussion by calling (315) 536-6114 or by clicking the button below.  Co-sponsored by Keuka Compass. Blockbuster Film Night: A Beloved LGBT Classic
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

LGBT Pride Month continues!  “Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein re-creates his role as the unsinkable Arnold Beckoff in this film adaptation of the smash Broadway play TORCH SONG TRILOGY. A very personal story that is both funny and poignant, TORCH SONG TRILOGY chronicles a New Yorker's search for love, respect and tradition in a world that seems not especially made for him. From Arnold's hilarious steps toward domestic bliss with a reluctant school teacher, to his first truly promising love affair with a young fashion model, Arnold's greatest challenge remains his complicated relationship with his mother. But armed with a keenly developed sense of humor and oftentimes piercing wit, Arnold continues to test the commonly accepted terms of endearment--and endurance--in a universally affecting story that confirms that happiness is well worth carrying a torch for” (IMDb).  Also starring Anne Bancroft and Matthew Broderick.  2 hours; rated R.  Free and open to the public; all adults are welcome to bring their open minds and hearts.

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Celebrate the kickoff of another summer of fun at Penn Yan Public Library with Books & Bikes Fest 2018! While you're here, get a free book just for signing up for our summer reading program. Need a bike helmet? We're giving those away for free, too, while supplies last. Penn Yan Police officers will be here to make sure helmets fit the way they are supposed to, plus you can check out their cool police bikes! There will be balloon animals, face painting, and snacks, and it's all free! Save the date and spread the word! Thanks to our community partners at Lyons National Bank, Penn Yan Rotary, Friends of Penn Yan Public Library, Penn Yan Central School District, and the Penn Yan Police Department for helping make this event possible.

Revisiting the Founding Era: Dispelling Myths and Misconceptions
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

As our country celebrates another anniversary this month, come together to examine and discuss the founding themes of our great experiment in democracy.  In this session, explore the ways in which American political culture draws on Founding era myths, and review recent scholarship that challenges the way that most contemporary Americans understand our constitutional foundations.   Discussion will be facilitated by Angela Narasimhan, associate professor of political science at Keuka College.  Participants will have access to a curated reader of primary resources that illustrate the era’s themes.  Sign up to reserve a copy by calling 315-536-6114 or by clicking the link below, then come by the library to pick it up to peruse ahead of the session.

Revisiting the Founding Era is a three-year national initiative of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, presented in partnership with the American Library Association and the National Constitution Center, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant provides 100 public libraries across the country the opportunity to use historical documents to spark public conversations about the Founding Era’s enduring ideas and themes and how they continue to influence our lives today. Visit www.foundingera.org for more information on this national program, and visit your library to take part in this timely conversation!  Watch for related events in the coming months.

Geology of the Finger Lakes
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The Finger Lakes region contains some of New York’s most distinctive and beautiful landscapes. What clues about New York’s recent and more ancient geological past can we read from the landforms and rocks we encounter every day? Glaciers produced much of what we see, but rocks underneath the glacial features tell an even older story about ancient tropical seas, volcanoes and mountains on the horizon, armored fish, the very first forests, strange amphibians, and more.  About the presenter: “By geological standards of time, David Kendrick was born and grew up in Indiana, earned a B.S. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from Harvard, studied rocks and fossils in places like Utah, Montana, Jamaica, the Bahamas, New York, Australia, Sweden, and the Netherlands, and became an Associate Professor of Geoscience at Hobart & Wm Smith Colleges, all in the blink of an eye.”
