Reading & Discussion Series: American Politics and Community Today
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Why is our country so divided today?  How can we start to bridge the gaps between us?  This July and August, take a small step toward understanding.  Penn Yan Public Library and the Civic Dialogues Group are pleased to present a series of facilitated discussions about Talking to Strangers: Anxieties of Citizenship since Brown v. Board of Education by Danielle Allen.  Each week, read a portion of the book and meet at the library to share your reactions and ideas, guided by Dr. Henry Thomas, professor emeritus of political science at the University of North Florida.  This program is made possible by Humanities New York’s Adult Reading & Discussion grant program, which also makes copies of the text available to borrow.  Please call 315-536-6114 to register for this free program and to reserve a copy of the book; they are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and are expected to be returned at the end of the series.

This session will cover the remainder of part one, "Loss," chapters 2-4.  If this will be your first time joining us, feel free to also read the prologue and chapter 1.

About the book: “’Don't talk to strangers’ is the advice long given to children by parents of all classes and races. Today it has blossomed into a fundamental precept of civic education, reflecting interracial distrust, personal and political alienation, and a profound suspicion of others. In this powerful and eloquent essay, Danielle Allen, a 2002 MacArthur Fellow, takes this maxim back to Little Rock, rooting out the seeds of distrust to replace them with ‘a citizenship of political friendship.’”

Classics in Religion: Contemporary Muslim Issues
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Starting next Monday, our friends at Cobblestone Springs begin a special summer installment of their ongoing Classics in Religion series here at the library, with three lectures and discussions that will address contemporary issues in Islam. A special attention will be given to whether Qur’anic values lay groundwork for addressing contemporary issues, such as hatred and violence towards others, mutual understanding and collaborative work, as well as concerns for justice and environmental issues.

The facilitator, Shalahudin Kafrawi, is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He teaches “The West and the Qur’an,” “Negotiating Islam,” “Jihad,” “Imagining American Religion,” “Creation Stories,” “Religion, Peace, and Conflict,” and other courses in religious studies. He is the author of “Methodology of Qur’anic Interpretation: Fakhr al-Din al-Razi’s Exegetic Principles” and others.

Come explore a tapestry of rich topics with deeply spiritual threads.  Everyone in invited to attend one or many sessions.  The series is sponsored by Cobblestone Springs (www.cobblestone-springs.org).  Check our calendar at www.pypl.org for each week’s topic and presenter.

This session will cover part two of the book, "Why We Have Bad Habits," chapters 5-7.  If this will be your first time joining us, feel free to also read the prologue and part 1.

This session will cover part three of the book, "New Democratic Vistas," chapters 8-11.  If this will be your first time joining us, feel free to also read the prologue, part 1 and part 2.

Clothing and Psychology
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Grab at seat at a repeat presentation of one of our most popular programs!  What does your choice of clothing say about you – your background, your political beliefs, your occupation – your hobbies and interests? What do your plaid slacks reveal about your mindset? This informal talk will give you a chance to learn about what image you may be projecting through the clothes you wear every day – and will help you decipher the code behind other people’s clothing choices.  Will this be a stuffy lecture? Do bears wear shorts? Will you learn something useful? Does the First Lady plan what to wear to state occasions?  These questions and others might be answered at this talk. Presenting information about the meaning of clothing will be Stephanie Olsen, who has a master’s degree in English and psychology, and who has been interested in clothing choices since her diaper days.

Opioid Education and Naloxone Informational Session for Library Staff
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

As we are all aware, the severity of opioid-related overdoses is quickly on the rise across our nation and especially in NY State. One of the key methods of fighting this opioid epidemic is providing education and information about opioids and overdoses. Please join us as Mr. Michael Pirozzolo, Executive Director, and his staff from Southern Tier Regional Emergency Medical Services, Inc. provide an Opioid and Naloxone Education Workshop.

Public overdoses are occurring in many spaces and some libraries are choosing to educate their staff about overdoses and Naloxone (Narcan) in preparation for such events. This workshop will provide an education about the dangers of opioids, the signs of overdoses, and how to administer Naloxone. Libraries will then be able to later make educated decisions on whether they wish to have the overdose antidote Naxolone on hand in their libraries. Attending this workshop is for educational purposes only and will not require you and your library to have the antidote. We want to provide an informational session to help in the organization of assistance of those in our communities who need it.

Graphic Novel Book Club: THE SCULPTOR
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

This month, read and discuss THE SCULPTOR by Scott McCloud, in which an artist makes a bargain with Death to bring anything he imagines into being—but he only gets 200 more days to live.  McCloud, a creator and literary theorist who literally wrote the book on comics, has contributed a sensitive and moving work to the graphic canon with this piece.  Closely related to comic books, graphic novels are a uniquely American mode of storytelling known for an incredible range of expression thanks to their union of words and pictures.  This group is intended for adults aged 18 or older.  No need to be a comic fan—give this unique medium a try!  And please consider supporting our gracious host site by purchasing one of their fine products during our visit.  Please call (315) 536-6114 or visit our events calendar at www.pypl.org to register for this free event.

Cooperative Fee-Based Services Discussion
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Historically, STLS has provided member libraries with services beyond what is required in Education Law or allotted through NYS Aid. Some of these services have included print shop, acquisitions, physical processing of materials and varying IT support.

STLS, as a cooperative system, has offered these services through some type of fee structure because they are essential to our membership and provide significant cost savings to the local library.
During our 2016 Plan of Service Focus Groups and Cost Share Discussions, member libraries asked STLS to facilitate some type of conversation around current “fee-based services”.  Both Processing and IT Support are our only fee-based services.

On Wednesday, August 30 from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm, we invite member libraries to participate in this information gathering session. At this meeting, STLS staff will talk about how these services are currently provided, their costs, what other systems are doing and offer suggestions as to how we can keep services cost effective while improving customer service.

Member libraries are asked to be present and share their experiences relative to these two “fee-based services”. This is your cooperative library system and we need to hear from you. The information gathered at this session will assist STLS with key decision-making to provide the most beneficial services to our members.

Thank you for your consideration and ongoing support.
