Afternoon Classics: Banned Books Week
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Banned Books Week continues with a classic film adaptation of a literary masterpiece that stands as one of the great parables in defense of intellectual freedom.  “Guy Montag is a firefighter who lives in a lonely, isolated society where books have been outlawed by a government fearing an independent-thinking public. It is the duty of firefighters to burn any books on sight… After Montag falls in love with book-hoarding Clarisse, he begins to read confiscated books. It is through this relationship that he begins to question the government's motives behind book-burning” (IMDb).  Adapted from the beloved Ray Bradbury novel.  Directed by François Truffaut and starring Oskar Werner, Julie Christie and Cyril Cusack.  1966; 112 minutes; not rated.  Feel free to bring snacks!

The presentation includes many low-cost ideas that require minimal staff time. You’ll also have the chance to engage in conversation and Q&A with Amy.

After participating in this event, you will:

  • Gain at least 40 program ideas for adults.
  • Be ready for each month with a few program ideas for each.
  • Receive an outline of the themes and ideas plus an organized list of programs audience members add in typed chat.

Alfred University Art Education students will be holding a Cultural Unity Tape Mural program.  Cultural unity is an important and relevant topic in today's society.  Culture can be found within everyone's identity and should be celebrated.  Using creative ways to express our cultures can help promote unity.  The mural will depict a scene, story, quote or figure that represents people of different cultures coming together.  Using tape to create the mural, students must work together to lay down tape in carefully thought out ways.  While the mural may only be temporary, what students learn while creating it is everlasting.

Civics 101: New York State Constitutional Convention
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Do you want to know more about the topics and issues you see in the news, as well as the civic institutions and traditions that govern them?  The library and its partners want to be your source for information and answers.  This ongoing program will provide refreshers on key topics you may recall from your high school government classes, as well as deep-dive explorations of issues pulled from current events.  With a fact-based approach, the program will seek to answer the questions that participants in American society need to know in order to be the best citizens possible.  This month, village trustee and retired educator Rich Stewart will present on the New York State Constitutional Convention vote that’s been making headlines: what is involved in the process?  What are the pros and cons associated with holding a convention and voting to amend the constitution?  What alternatives to constitutional amendments exist to alter the way things are done in our state?  Stewart will also open a dialogue for attendees to discuss what kinds of amendments the average citizen would like to see proposed.

Graphic Novel Book Club: Fables & Reflections
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Close out the Halloween season with an exploration of beloved author Neil Gaiman’s Sandman mythology.  In this volume, Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, flits between a collection of short pieces loosely linked by a meditation on the nature of storytelling.  Moody imagery and atmospheric storytelling make this a subtle and thought-provoking autumn read.  Closely related to comic books, graphic novels are a uniquely American mode of storytelling known for an incredible range of expression thanks to their union of words and pictures.  This group is intended for adults aged 18 or older.  No need to be a comic fan—give this unique medium a try!  Please call (315) 536-6114 or click below to register for this free event.

Classics in Religion: Sufism
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Come explore a tapestry of rich topics with deeply spiritual threads.  Everyone in invited to attend one or many sessions.

"Mystics cherish an individual, unique relationship with whatever and whomever they experience as the Divine.

The Inyati Order is a particular branch of Sufism which is independent of any one religion and follows the thread of Divine Truth which weaves its way through known and even unknown religions and traditions.  Its founder, Inayat Khan, was an Indian mystic and musician who was the first to bring any form of organized Sufism to the West.  He realized and taught the universality of Divine Truth and opened this path to all interested seekers irrespective of religion (including no religion), race, gender or other discriminating characteristics.  Our common humanity and connection is all that matters. The present head of The Inayati Order (called the Pir) is Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Inayat Khan’s grandson who will be visiting Rochester, NY Oct. 13-15 (visit website listed below).

This four session introduction (Sept. 11 and Nov. 6, 13 & 20) will be experiential and include samples of Inayati Order activities, including spiritual practices, worship, group healing services and others.  There is ample time for discussion, questions and exploration of areas of interest, Sufi concepts and the history of the Order.  All are welcome."

Rev. Henry Cretella, M.D. is a senior teacher in The Inayati Order and the associated Sufi Healing Order, a minister (Cherag) of the Universal Worship, a spiritual guide as well as individual and group retreat guide and a leader of Dances of Universal Peace.  He is one of several local leaders of the Sufi Order of Rochester, a local chapter of The Inayati Order in Rochester, NY (sufiorderofrochester.org).  He offers many seminars and retreats and is especially interested in connecting Sufi teachings with modern concepts in psychology, psychiatry, philosophy and science.  He has worked professionally as a general, child and adolescent psychiatrist in many areas of Western NY.

Libraries Out Loud - a video series worth talking about

In August 2016, a collection of curious trustees got together to discuss Expect More! by R. David Lankes. Since then, we've discussed nearly every angle of libraries - including cats! Now, as a Club, we're ready to return to content on what libraries are doing, when they're doing it right.

For our November 14th meeting, we'll be watching the video series Libraries Out Loud, produced by Kansas City Public Television, in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library. Check out the series here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9h7ml3UjW0&list=PLBN6h95YYx6fFa4OjeF2rLq2eXJDOuDoZ

Join the conversation! We'll be meeting up at The Cellar, Market Street, in Corning at 4:30 pm to chat - we'll provide the snacks!

We will be making a reservation for our group, so please register for participation at the meeting by November 7th.

The series is sponsored by Cobblestone Springs, www.cobblestone-springs.org.

Facilities Planning for Buildings over 50 Years Old

This workshop will be divided into two one hour segments. One for facilities planning without construction: how to improve accessibility and service with the space you have. The other for facilities planning that requires construction, and so, State Historic Preservation Office approval. Someone from SHPO will join us - either by phone or in person - to give tips and tricks to help you design approvable projects everyone can live with. Remember that for most things where state approval is required, starting early is key.

These workshops will immediately follow the Allegany County Public Library Directors' Association (ACPLDA) meeting.
