1000 Books Before Kindergarten
10:00 AM

Introducing a new free early literacy program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she begins kindergarten!

The program entails reading any book to your newborn, infant and/or toddler before they start kindergarten.  It may sound hard to do, but it really is not! If you read just one book a night together, you will have read 365 books in a year!  That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years!  There are no restrictions as to which book you read or how many times you read it!  It can include books read to your child by a teacher, a sibling, or during Story Time.  Each experience counts as a book read!

The League of Women Voters (LWV) Tecumseh/Lenawee County is pleased to inform our community of the Vote411.org process. In 2006, the LWVUS introduced Vote411.org to voters of our nation. Vote411.org has been a useful tool designed to help voters find different pieces of information based on their local and national interests and needs. This website provides users information/links to easily find their national, state, and local candidates. Vote411.org has questions for each group of candidates who are asked to respond. This allows voters a chance to know more about the candidates and their opinions.

Travels in the Holy Land on Zoom (Registration Required)
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

In September 2017, Russell and Lonnie Haines joined a guided tour of Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. Their first destination was Jordan, where they visited the capital, Amman, and then Jerash, the best-preserved Roman city in the Middle East. Next was Mount Nebo, where Moses saw the "Promised Land.” From there they went to Madaba, with its mosaic maps which had extraordinarily detailed directions to early Jerusalem. Finally, they walked the path through the canyon to Petra. On the Mediterranean coast they learned about the historical importance of Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Caesarea, Haifa, and Akko, and explored the Golan Heights and Kfar Haruv, one of the many Kibbutzim overlooking the Sea of Galilee. They then toured the town of Nazareth, the Church of Annunciation, the Church of the Visitation, and finally, Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity. Other days were spent retracing Jesus's life at sites such as Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, Jacob's Well, Lazarus's Tomb, and Jerusalem. Their final excursion was spent visiting Jericho, Masada, and the site of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Russell Haines holds an M.A. in education administration from the University of Michigan and spent more than 30 years teaching in a variety of fields. Lonnie Haines received her B.S. degree in mathematics and science from the University of Detroit Mercy, and her M.S. in the teaching of science from the University of Michigan. She is an accomplished artist in watercolor and acrylic painting.

Journey to Los Angeles and New Zealand (and back again)
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

This travelogue with world traveler George Jabol begins with a four-night layover in the City of Angels, Los Angeles (LA), prior to departure for our target destination of New Zealand – giving us time to explore an American city we had heard so much about but had never visited. Using our downtown hotel as a base, we played our role as tourists in Hollywood, on Mexican-themed Olvera Street, along Rodeo Drive, and at Universal Studios, where we rubbed shoulders with several movie stars. Nearby our hotel we visited architectural treasures like the stunning Walt Disney Concert Hall and the glamorous Millennium Biltmore Hotel, built in the star-studded past of 1923. Reluctantly leaving LA, we began our 12-hour flight for New Zealand, arriving in the large but very walkable city of Auckland. We had time for several hours of sightseeing in and around Auckland before boarding our small cruise ship, the Discovery, which served as our home for the next ten days as we navigated around New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Our first port of call took us to a down-under sheep farm where we saw sheep-shearing and a sheep dog trial. We also visited a thermal reserve, reminding us how seismically active New Zealand is, and the New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, where we learned about the native Maori culture which pervades so much of New Zealand life. At the seacoast city of Napier we saw a city destroyed in 1931 by an earthquake but rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Deco architectural style. Passing through Cook Strait, which separates the North and South Islands, we proceeded down the Tasman Sea side of the South Island, where the scenery around the fjords is majestic. Milford Sound especially impressed us with its misty, craggy mountains. On the southeastern coast we visited the city of Dunedin, whose name is the old Gaelic word for Edinburgh in Scotland. We had a panoramic view of the city of Christchurch before stopping at New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. Our cruise ship returned us full circle to Auckland, where we enjoyed nearly a full day of additional sightseeing before beginning our very long aerial journey back home again.

Jabol received his B.A. degree from Ohio’s Muskingum University, and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan. Fully retired now from a career with the federal government, George creates photographic slide shows as a way to remember his travels and share them with others.

Michigan Haunts: Public Places, Eerie Spaces on Zoom
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join co-authors Jon Milan and Gail Offen as they take a road trip to “the other side,” exploring countless hauntings, ghost towns and bizarre tales of murder and mayhem, drawing from more than 300 years of Michigan’s modern history. They will discuss many of the more baffling and noteworthy, including the poisonings at Cass Corridor’s Alhambra; the Purple Gang’s haunted Clare hotel hideout, hauntings in the Irish Hills, and the strange phenomenon of the Paulding Lights near Watersmeet – a mystery that Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” once offered $100,000 to anyone able to solve!  And why do people still see soldiers at Detroit’s historic Fort Wayne.?

In addition, the pair will explore some of Michigan’s “most haunted” eateries like Detroit’s Whitney, Cadieux Cafe and Two-Way Inn. Also, Houdini (who considered Detroit his second home) died in Detroit after his last performance on Oct. 24, 1926.

Michigan Haunts: Public Places, Eerie Spaces is the only book of public places in Michigan with haunted stories and legends. So you can visit all these haunts and decide for yourself. Throw it in your glove compartment. It's a great way to discover Michigan!

Managing Digital Images on Zoom
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Seems that everyone is a photographer these days. We use our smartphones, our tablets, and even some people even use cameras. With the ease of taking pictures, we find ourselves with a new concern. How do we manage, save and share these pictures? This virtual presentation with photographer Corey Seeman will introduce you to photo sharing services that are available from companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook and flickr (among others) and how to organize them for easy retrieval. We will look at ways organize, backup and share pictures with friends and family. We will also explore how images are found by others (using tags or search terms), if you want to share more broadly. This could be the perfect session if you want to do something with all those pictures on your phone or clogging up your SD card!

Corey Seeman is the director of Kresge Library Services (Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), a position he has held since 2006.  He is also an avid photographer whose work has been shared via flickr.  In particular, he is an avid photographer of the campus squirrels at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor He is married with two adult children. While he has written a great deal about libraries, he is trying a variety of fun fiction and nonfiction writing.

Climate Change as of 2023: Simple. Serious, Solvable on Zoom
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This virtual event with broadcast and digital meteorologist Chris Edwards will be a fact-based look at the scientific state of the issues and impacts involved in climate change, localized in many ways to Michigan. We will explore, in a hopeful way, a range of ideas to address the significant challenges we face, including what each of us can do.

Chris Edwards began his career as a forecaster in the U.S. Air Force. He was then one of the first meteorologists with The Weather Channel in Atlanta, before moving on to forecast at WISN-TV in Milwaukee, and KYW-TV in Philadelphia. He began carefully studying and reporting on “global warming” in 1987.

Edwards was Chief Meteorologist at WJBK-FOX2 for 15 years and a broadcast and digital meteorologist at WXYZ-TV for over 10 years.

He was honored with 3 Emmy awards, for environmental reporting and weathercasting, as well as recognition from the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for Best Weathercast in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

As a retired TV meteorologist, he now enjoys part-time work at the University of Michigan, where he recently collaborated with Professor Richard Rood to produce a video on climate change. Edwards also serves as the Climate Change Specialist for the city of Detroit, and regularly gives climate change presentations to libraries and professional organizations.
