Unraveling The Oldest Mystery of the Great Lakes
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Countless shipwreck and treasure hunters have searched for the resting place of famed French explorer, Robert La Salle’s 1679 lost ship, Le Griffon. These intrepid adventurers for more than 340 years continue to search in Lakes, Erie, Huron and Michigan, La Salle himself being the first.

Steven and Kathie Libert, author of Le Griffon and the Huron Islands 1679, will discuss the 55-years quest in solving the exact spot Le Griffon met her demise. The first most important hurdle was to determine where the Huron Islands lay as it was among these islands a historical account noted her final resting place. Our quest will offer 8-clues depicting precise detail while ferreting out the location.

If time permits, we shall briefly share the differences with images and illustrations between a 17th century French ship’s bow sprit and an 1850’s fishing pound net stake.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

A Year in Bloom -- Through a Pollinator's Eyes
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Primarily an “idea” talk for those desiring to plant for pollinators, but not knowing where to begin or how to select plants that best meet pollinators’ needs throughout the year. Questions explored in this talk include - How do seasonal bloom patterns provide just what pollinators need at critical stages throughout the year? Where do bees get the protein necessary to ensure successful early spring brood growth? What role do fall blooming wildflowers play in aiding Monarch migration and pollinator over-wintering success? Are all flowering plants the same; and what advantages do native species provide for the pollinator gardener? The above questions and more are answered in this visually rich and information packed presentation by Vince Ste. Marie of Windy Rock Farm and Nursery (Manchester, MI).

Vince and his family practice environmentally responsible farming at their home, Windy Rock Farm and Nursery in Manchester, MI, and were chemical-free beekeepers for ten years. In 2016 they opened an on-farm retail specialty nursery offering primarily Michigan native flowering trees, flowering shrubs, and perennial wildflowers of benefit to pollinators. They have hosted numerous Michigan Master Gardener and Michigan Garden Club meetings, field trips, tours, and educational days at their farm and Vince has been an invited speaker on pollinators and the plants they need at various gardening and beekeeping related conferences, club meetings, and community educational events. They also make their plants available at select conferences and community events across Michigan.

In addition to his presentation, Vince will bring a selection of pollinator-friendly plants for sale. Pre-orders are highly encouraged and can be placed by e-mail at windyrocknursery@outlook.com or by phone call/text to (734) 358-8260. Our current full color catalog PDF is available for download or printing from our website -- www.windyrocknursery.com.

Lisbon, Portugal: A Photographic Journey
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Take a photographic journey to Lisbon, Portugal, with Tecumseh resident and world traveler Anne Flora, owner of FloraWorks.

Anne’s careers have given her a unique perspective on her current work. With a Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa, Anne moved to New York City and worked independently as an intaglio printmaker at the Printmaking Workshop and MOK Studio. She participated in many curated exhibits in the US and internationally.

The next sixteen years Anne devoted herself to social services work in New York City. A life-long learner, she went back to school to earn her culinary degree and used it to provide great meals for senior citizens in Manhattan. From 1983 to 1986, Anne divided her time between her duties as chef, supervisor and manager at the University of Michigan and her Bed and Breakfast venture in Barmouth, Wales, U.K. In 2003, Anne retired from her University of Michigan duties as the Director of University Unions Food Services – to continue and expand her next career as a fiber artist.

Teen Book Club
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Hey Tecumseh Teens! We are starting a new book club for teens starting this month! Join us for conversation and snacks as we discuss this month's title.
This month's pick is Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell. "Seasonal best friends" Josiah and Deja have worked at the same pumpkin patch each autumn all through high school. This Halloween night is their last night together, and Deja is determined to keep Josiah from feeling melancholy and do ALL the things. See all the sights! Eat all the snacks! And maybe get Josiah to FINALLY talk to his crush before the night ends. What if they made their last night an adventure to remember?
This book is the perfect fall read--come and join us! We will have copies ready to check out the first week of September. We will also discuss how the club format will look going forward, so bring your ideas and let us know what you would like to see in your book club. Questions? The Kit & Kaboodle on Kit Homes: Aladdin to Sears
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The early part of the 20th Century saw an American phenomenon in housing made possible by a confluence of events. The automobile assembly line process in manufacture was extended to home building. Never before in history was there such a choice in housing for the average person. From the planned communities to mail order houses, families could achieve the American dream. Many of the houses we admire today are the result of kit homes and mail order houses. Find out with Ron Campbell, Oakland County Economic Development Department, how to identify a kit home and regardless we’ll leave a light on for you.

Primers, Chalk and Bells; The History of One-Room Schools in Michigan
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

In the rapidly changing world of education today, it is comforting to look back on the “good old days” of the one-room school. Michigan has more one-room schools than nearly any other state. Some of them are still functioning. We will look at the architecture, curricula, rules for students and teachers and the role the school played in the life of the community. We will focus especially on the Geddes Townhall School. In 1987, the Townhall School was moved from its original site on Morgan Road in Pittsfield Township to the campus of Eastern Michigan University. Our presenter, Rochelle Balkam, will guide us on the school’s journey as it made its way, foot by foot, to its present site. Attendees will be encouraged to share personal stories and memories of one-room schools.

Rochelle Balkam taught U.S. state and local history and college prep government at Ypsilanti High School for 36 years. She taught Michigan history at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) for 22 years. She holds an M.A. degree in history and an M.S. in historic preservation from EMU, and served as Chair of the Friends of the Townhall School on the EMU campus. She now serves as president of the Michigan One-room School Association.

Aztec and Mayan Culture in Mexico
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Travel with George Jabol as he leads us on a 12-day journey he took in September, 2022, through Mexico. The primary purpose of this trip was to explore ancient Aztec and Mayan sites extending from Mexico City to the Yucatan, but along the way there was also much to enjoy and learn about modern day Mexican culture. Visits to Aztec temples at Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan were highlights of the time spent in Mexico City. This was followed by a day touring the charming Colonial town of Puebla. While in Veracruz, a museum visit featured the famous colossal basalt heads of Olmec leaders. This was followed by a tour of the partially restored ruins at Palenque, one of the most beautiful Mayan city-states in Mesoamerica. Next, the Mayan site at Uxmal near Merida provoked wonder because of the many intricate carvings preserved on the stone temples. The tour concluded with a tour of Chichen Itza, the principal ceremonial center of the Yucatan, and finally a relaxing stay at a resort hotel in Cancun.

George Jabol received his B.A. degree from Ohio’s Muskingum University, and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan. Fully retired now from a career with the federal government, He creates photographic slide shows as a way to remember his travels and share them with others.

Under The Radar Michigan: How It All Started
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Ever wonder how two regular guys ended up with a popular PBS TV show and book that feature the cool people, places and things that make Michigan a great place to be. Well, if you’d like to find out how it all happened, join us on November 2nd as the men of Under the Radar Michigan make their way to Tecumseh. Join Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman for an inspirational story of reinvention and discovery. They’ll tell you how they do it  ... why they do it ... and share great stories from their travels around Michigan. Be sure to bring your questions, your sense of adventure and your sense of humor, because when Tom and Jim start talking ... it’s a wild and crazy ride.

Book signing immediately to follow. The First 50, Next 50, and Yet Another 50 will all be available for purchase.

Tom Daldin is an Emmy award winning producer, actor and writer, who has created programs that have aired across Michigan and around the U.S. on PBS. He has also won a number of “best actor” awards in both commercial television and industrial films. Growing up in Birmingham, Michigan, Tom has always been a fan of travel. At the age of 12 he joined the World Adventure Series Club at the Detroit Institute of Arts where his mother would drop him off to watch travel log films. After graduation from Oakland University with a degree in journalism, Tom, his wife Cathy and their children have turned Michigan into their vacation playground, exploring its many wonders and attractions. Tom loves people and loves where he lives.

Jim Edelman’s path to television producer took him from Radio Talk Show Producer to Radio Promotion Director to Radio Sales Manager to National Radio Sales (Jim loved radio). Jim’s attention to detail, idea generation and the sales chops to keep the show funding flowing, help complete the circle of skills for Under the Radar (UTR) Michigan. UTR fulfills a lifelong mission to combine the best of his sales skills with the creative guy that’s always been lurking in the shadows. His love of storytelling and searching or off-beat, little known stories really makes his day. Jim attended many colleges but learned more working for the Detroit Pistons, as a Ski Instructor, Cycle Racing Producer, Tomato Picker and Bakers Assistant. He lives in Salem, Michigan and insists that he’s quite normal despite owning three cats. He’s also typing in the third person right now.

Under the Radar Michigan is an Emmy Award winning PBS television program that features the cool people, places and things that make Michigan a great place to be. It's fun ... fast paced ... and we talk to real Michigan people, and tell real Michigan success stories. We pack a ton of positive information and energy into every program.

This special event is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of TDL.

College Football: The Michigan-Ohio Rivalry
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

With a history that stretches over a century, the Michigan–Ohio State rivalry is one of the oldest in college football. The two teams claim a combined 19 national championships, hundreds of All-Americans, and 10 Heisman Trophies. Each year, millions of Buckeye and Wolverine fans watch the two teams battle for an opportunity to win the Big Ten championship in a contest simply known as “the Game.”

Ken Magee and Jon Stevens have written the history of this great rivalry in a book entitled The Game, The Michigan-Ohio State Rivalry. For this event, they will share highlights of their book as well as interesting facts about the famous “feud.” From Yost to Schembechler to Harbaugh — come hear about this century old annual tradition!

Ken Magee is an expert in Wolverine football history. He is a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, former chief of police for the University of Michigan, and a retired federal agent.

Jon M. Stevens was born in Powell, Ohio, and grew up in the shadow of Ohio Stadium. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 2004 and is currently a designer for an architecture firm in Ann Arbor.

This event will include a book signing and books will be for sale.

Great British Baking Tour: Holiday Edition on Zoom & In-Person
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Come on board for a Zoom cooking adventure. Join UK travel/relocation consultant and former UK resident Claire Evans for a delightful culinary tour of the UK inspired by “The Great British Baking Show” television series, aired on PBS. Learn about making a proper cup of tea, regional specialties, their origins, and the particular parts of the UK they hail from. As it’s the holidays, she’ll focus on festive baking in particular. She’ll translate the trickiest parts of British recipes for Americans so you can try them in your own kitchen. Pick up a few useful travel tips as well, just in case you’d like to create your own tour!

Claire Evans is a former journalist, attorney, and college lecturer who started her love of most things British as she and her mother watched countless Britcoms on PBS.  She went on to study abroad in London and, against the odds, she married a Brit she met in Peoria, Illinois.  They moved to England, where they lived for a number of years.  Outside of her work for a legal advice charity, Claire became a student of historical sights, pub dining, and tea shops.  Her business, Tea with Claire, grew from friends asking for travel and relocation advice.

TDL will be hosting a special viewing party from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. where guests will have the opportunity to frost and decorate holiday cutout cookies with Edward Jones financial advisor Frank Zanger and Community Relations Manager Kara Dominique of Lenawee Medical Care Facility.

The Game That Almost Broke Me on Zoom
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

An up-close portrait of one of the most prolific defensive players in NCAA history and a life almost unraveled by football- a memoir of true inspiration. The Game That Almost Broke Me is the inspirational story of Tavarski Wallace, an ambitious player in the game of achieving a spot in the NFL, and a resilient player in the turbulent, challenging, and sometimes unfair game of life. The intriguing evolution of Wallace is remarkable in this book-long journey, which is marked by milestones of overcoming adversity - from resolving struggles academically, supporting his hard-working single mother, to ultimately managing the unforgiving politics of professional football, Wallace's story is uplifting and inspiring.

From modest beginnings in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Tavarski documents a series of key relationships which shaped him as an individual and helped fuel his dreams of becoming a linebacker in the NFL. With unrelenting persistence every step of the way, the experiences, failures, and surprising successes of Tavarski in The Game That Almost Broke Me prove how the American Dream can dramatically transform with time and may even become something entirely different in the end.

Meet Tavarski Wallace

Tavarski Wallace's journey is an extraordinary testament to the power of resilience and determination. Growing up he faced numerous challenges and had to navigate life's obstacles on his own.

During his formative years, Tavarski found himself grappling with confusion, frequently getting suspended from school, and displaying disobedience towards his teachers. However, a significant turning point arrived when his football coach imparted words of wisdom that continue to fuel his motivation to this day.

These words served as transformative keys that shattered the chains holding him back and propelled him towards greatness. Wallace is not only the proud owner of TW Consulting, but also a passionate advocate for struggling students within school districts. Through his expertise and guidance, he empowers educational institutions to cultivate an environment where individuals can thrive, enabling them to reach their fullest potential and attain extraordinary accomplishments.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Tavarski has penned an inspiring autobiography titled The Game that Almost Broke Me. Within its pages, he candidly shares the ups and downs of his life, recounting the pursuit of his dream to play in the NFL. Through his compelling narrative, he uplifts readers, illustrating the importance of perseverance and unwavering faith in oneself.

Tavarski Wallace's story serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing adversity, demonstrating that one's circumstances do not define their potential. His relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth serves as an inspiration to all those striving to overcome their own challenges and make a positive impact in the world.

Take Charge of Aging
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

The reality is, if you do not take charge of your aging, someone else will. When you look into the future, say 15 years, do you sometimes feel a little nervous? You have a great many things planned, but there may be some “what ifs.” In this class, Sarah Batzer, will walk members through an individual, realistic workbook, provided, that will create a plan for the future and the “what ifs.” If the need arises you will be able to find the solutions you have already chosen—not the ones chosen for you. This is not a financial class. We cover housing, transportation, meals, medications, bill paying and how to share your plan with family or a loved one

Sarah Batzer earned a master’s in gerontology from The University of Missouri, St. Louis, and has been active in the field of aging for more than 25 years, through teaching, consulting and design.

The cost of the workbook is $5. Click here to register for the seminar.

A Life Well Spent Walking in the Woods and Sleeping on the Ground
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

After several years working as a sports editor in Juneau, Alaska, Jim DuFresne spent the winter of 1981 in New Zealand backpacking and wrote his first book, Tramping in New Zealand, for Lonely Planet.  He followed up with Lonely Planet’s Alaska travel guidebook and then returned to Michigan to write Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails & Water Routes.

That guide to the wilderness areas of Isle Royale, known at the park as the “backpacker’s bible,” is in its 40th year of continuous publication in various editions.

Having reached that amazing milestone, DuFresne decided to wrap up his career, with a presentation entitled "The End of the Trail: A Life Well Spent Walking in the Woods and Sleeping on the Ground." The hour-long PowerPoint presentation highlights the best wilderness adventures of his long career, taking the audience into the wilds of New Zealand, Alaska, and of course Isle Royale

Among DuFresne’s more than 20 published titles are Backpacking in Michigan and 12 Classic Trout Streams in Michigan: A Handbook for Fly Anglers (University of Michigan Press), The Trails of M-22 and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (MichiganTrailMaps.com) and 50 Hikes In Michigan (Backcountry Publications).

Copies of the books will be available for purchase and signing.
