Grief Support Group
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Benefits of a Grief Support Group (excerpted from HelloGrief.com):

After the loss of a loved one, we experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions. The ever-changing emotions we experience with grief can catch us off guard, causing us to  act out of character, or differently than our typical personality and demeanor.

We all need a support system to help us as we move through our grief journey. While family and friends are vital, unless they have experienced a close personal loss, they most likely don’t fully “get it.” That is where support groups can become a valuable resource. In a support group, you will find 10 or so new comrades also living life after loss.

Grief support groups offer companionship and understanding from others who have experienced a similar loss, and are experiencing the similar challenges that living with grief brings.

In a culture that often avoids talking about loss, support groups give you the opportunity to share your story openly and guilt-free. You also have the opportunity to hear the stories of others and talk about coping day-to-day, as well as on the most difficult days of our grief journeys.

If you are looking for a support system in your grief journey, you should consider support groups. You will likely find the following things there:
•Emotional and physical support in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
•Support and understanding from others who have experienced a similar loss.
•The opportunity to begin the healing process through sharing your own story and hearing the stories of others.
•Coping skills to help you through the most difficult days of your grief journey.
•Hope through companionship with people who “get it” and understand first-hand what you’re going through.
•The opportunity to discover new traditions and ideas to keep loved ones present in your hearts and in your memories.
•Increased understanding of how children and other family members react to loss.
•Permission to grieve and permission to live a happy productive life.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Synopsis: "Elsa and Fred" is the story of two people who at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Elsa has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene in 'La Dolce Vita' at the Fontana di Trevi. Fred has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends meets Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into his life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live -- be it more or less -- is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases. Fred surrenders to Elsa's frenzy, to her youth, to her boldness, to her beautiful madness. And this is how Fred learns how to live.

Hall of Presidents Book Club: William Henry Harrison
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

John Tyler by Gary May

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

Bus Trip: Georgia O'Keefe at Peabody Essex Museum
9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Georgia O'Keeffe: Art, Image, Style is the first exhibition to explore the art, image and personal style of one of America’s most iconic artists. O’Keeffe’s understated and carefully designed garments, many never before exhibited, are presented alongside photographs and her paintings, illuminating O’Keeffe’s unified modernist aesthetic and distinctive self-styling. For more than 70 years, O’Keeffe shaped her public persona, defied labels and carved out a truly progressive, independent life in order to create her art. Her aesthetic legacy — compact masses, organic silhouettes, minimal ornamentation, and restrained color palettes — continues to capture the popular imagination and inspire leading designers and tastemakers of our day.

Cost: $18.00 (includes discounted ticket & RoadRunner).  Bus will leave the senior center at 9:30am and return late afternoon.

Japanese Flower Arranging
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Introduction to Ikebana: A Slideshow and Demonstration by Holly O. Harris

Learn about the Japanese aesthetic and how to add natural elegance to your floral arrangements.

Holly Harris has more than fifteen years of experience studying, arranging, exhibiting and lecturing on Ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging.

She will explain the finer points of Ikebana in a presentation including a brief description of its history and philosophy, followed by a demonstration of an Ikebana arrangement using local materials.

Holly O. Harris has been creating floral arrangements since she was a young girl. Her formal training began 18 years ago with teacher Ritsuko Chojin at the Kittery Point Ikebana Ikenobo chapter. Holly has participated in Ikebana Ikenobo symposia, shown her arrangements in the Wentworth Coolidge Mansion, and in several exhibits at the Portsmouth Library. For 10 years Holly exhibited weekly flower arrangements at UNH’s Murkland Hall. She has lectured, taught, and demonstrated Ikebana throughout New England.

She performed with Zirkus Knie in Switzerland, Circus Krone in Germany and with countless other touring shows in Italy, Holland, France, South Africa, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia. She came to the United States in 2000 with Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus and toured all over the US for two years. She has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and is a regular performer for the NBA & WNBA half-time shows and a featured performer on Princess Cruise Lines.

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Remember scouring over the artwork on the cover of your new vinyl LP and hoping the lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve.  Now is your chance to spin some vinyl on the turntable in a group setting and immerse yourself in the music.  The 33 1/2 club at the Townsend Public Library will meet and listen to classic LP's.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!
