The Buzz about Honey Bees
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

The Buzz About Honey Bees

Curious about bees?

Thinking of becoming a beekeeper?

Wondering how you can help them?

Join us for an informative talk to learn all about bees and beekeeping. Learn about the honey bee lifecycle, bees as pollinators, honey production and products of the hive, what it takes to keep bees alive today, planting for bees and other ways you can help them.

Plus try some raw local honey fresh from a hive!

One of My Foundationless Nucs Photo by Eric Roth

Anita Deeleyis a beekeeper and founder of Beverly Bees, a beekeeping company that rescues and relocates wild bee hives. An expert on honey bee disease and maladies, Anita has years of experience working to fix these issues for other beekeepers. She created an educational website for beekeepers called BeverlyBees.com. Anita maintains 30 hives, with her own stock of bees, she developed from her rescued feral colonies and select mite resistance genetics. Anita was recently featured in the September 2016 issue of American Beekeeping Journal and is on the Board of Directors for Massachusetts Beekeepers Association, a member of Essex County, Worcester County and Plymouth County Beekeepers Associations, Eastern Apicultural Society, American Beekeeping Federation and American Apitherapy Society. Anita and her husband, Brian, capture honey bee swarms and remove live bee hives from houses and structures. These bee colonies are then safely relocated to one of their apiaries with bees, hive, and brood intact. They also provide a pesticide free wasp removal service. In addition, Beverly Bees sells raw local honey from their “wild” hives, beeswax candles, lotion and lip balms at farmer’s markets and stores across Massachusetts.

The 33 1/3 Club

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Remember scouring over the artwork on the cover of your new vinyl LP and hoping the lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve.  Now is your chance to spin some vinyl on the turntable in a group setting and immerse yourself in the music.  The 33 1/2 club at the Townsend Public Library will meet and listen to classic LP's.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Movie Matinee:  Me Before You

Summary:  Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of color. And neither of them knows they're going to change each other for all time.

Bus Trip: Peabody Essex Museum

In addition to their lovely ongoing collections, they are featuring several special exhibitions including:

  1. LUNAR ATTRACTION:  As Earth's closest celestial body and only natural satellite, the moon has engaged our curiosity and imagination over millennia and across cultures. Contemporary artists use the moon as both a source of inspiration and investigation. Lunar Attraction features artworks and interactives that explore our longstanding fascination and connection with the moon, ranging from myths about the connection between werewolves and the full moon to the gravitational pull that controls Earth's tides to the 21st-century international race to build a base on the moon.  Lunar Attraction features works by Michael Benson, Adam David Brown, Craig Dorety, Fred Espenak, Foster + Partners, Sharon Harper, Beth Hoeckel, Mike Libby, Scott Listfield, Vera Lutter, Greg Mort, Takashi Murakami, Young Sook Park, Adrien Segal, Reel Water Productions, Sputniko!, Peter C. Stone, Brian Thomas, Philip Weber and Joseph Wheelwright.
  2. WORLD OF WEARABLE ART:  For the last 25 years, New Zealand has hosted an annual design competition that challenges sculptors, costume designers, textile artists and makers of all stripes to explore the boundary between fashion and art, and to "get art off the walls and onto the body." The WOW® World of WearableArtTM competition is the country's largest art event and each year it culminates in a live runway show for winners in front of an audience of 50,000.  WOW® World of WearableArtTM — the exhibition — presents 32 ensembles the competition's most unique, spectacular and outlandish wearable artworks. Expertly crafted in a range of materials, from wood and aluminum to fiberglass and taxidermy, these creations celebrate lavish creativity and push the limits of wearability. PEM is the exclusive U.S. east coast venue for this interactive and theatrical exhibition.
  3. MEGA-CITY: INDIA'S CULTURE OF THE STREETS: In the early 20th century, Indian artists viewed the village as the true locus for India's identity, distinct from that of the British colonial cities of Calcutta, Bombay and New Delhi. By mid-century, India had gained independence and its cities were replenished with all kinds of people fulfilling their dreams. In the cities, the drive toward modernity co-existed with the enduring presence of the spiritual in unexpected ways.  This installation includes paintings from PEM's Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection. Images of confrontation, hope, fracture and change traverse shifting grounds rich with contradictions.

The 33 1/3 Club
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Hall of Presidents Book Club: John Quincy Adams by Harlow Giles Unger
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

John Quincy Adams by Harlow Giles Unger

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

Bark: Get to Know Your Trees
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Bark: Get to Know Your Trees

The traits typically used to describe trees—leaves, twigs, and buds—are often hard to see or seasonally absent. Join Michael for an exploration of bark, which is always visible, in any season. As you hone your perceptive abilities you will learn about a system for identifying tree species by their bark, and discover why such a variety of bark characteristics exist. Why do some species have smooth bark, while on others it is thick and broken? Why does bark peel?

Ages 10+

We will be going outside for a portion of this program.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring bug repellant as needed.

Michael will be available to sign copies of his books,

Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast and

Drawing Trees and Leaves: Observing and Sketching the Natural World.
