Hall of Presidents Book Club:Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce by Michael F. Holt

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Got Vinyl?

Bring in your own stack of vinyl records and share your favorites with other music enthusiasts.  If you can’t bring your own, check out the collection at the Townsend Public Library.  No matter what your taste in music, members of the Townsend Library 33 1/3 Club are enamored to spin and listen to those old familiar tunes to the most esoteric melodies.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Irish Genealogy Before 1800

Image result for genealogy
This program is about ancient Irish genealogists and the method of connecting the information in their chronicles with modern records.
It contains video, animation and sound and is designed to be entertaining as well as informative.
This presentation is especially valuable for researchers who have ancestors who came to the U.S. before 1800 and for those who have traced their ancestors to the 19th century but could not go back further.

Thomas M. Toohey
Bio

Tom Toohey is a modern day seanchaí (Irish storyteller) who has traveled to Ireland 16 times and collected hundreds of stories. While there, he met many local historians and learned a great deal about early Irish genealogists. He comes to this tradition naturally as his parents were great storytellers. In the last few years Tom has recorded his family stories in a four volume book called Images of Other Lives

For 40 years Tom was a teacher. He taught all levels from elementary school through graduate school as a public school teacher, adjunct professor and educational consultant. Tom has a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, a M.M. from the University of Hartford and 65 additional graduate credits in learning theory. From these experiences Tom developed presentation methods that are unique and effective. In retirement Tom has shared his knowledge and skills with genealogical organizations and historical societies.

Chinese Empresses: Bus Trip to Peabody Essex Museum
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Chinese Empresses of the Forbidden City

This exhibition is the first to explore the role of empresses in shaping China’s last dynasty- the Qing dynasty - from 1644 to 1912. Nearly 200 spectacular objects from the Palace Museum tell the little-known stories of how imperial women influenced court politics, art and religion.

Timed to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of U.S.-China diplomatic relations, Empresses of China's Forbidden City is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum; the Smithsonian's Freer|Sackler, Washington, D.C.; and the Palace Museum, Beijing.

Explore sumptuous treasures from the Palace Museum that tell the little-known stories of empresses whose contributions had remained largely silent — until now.

Cost: $22.00 per person (Includes discounted ticket and transportation).  Please call the Senior Center to sign up.

Nature Journaling

Youth Arts Collaborative Sessions

Guest Naturalist of the Week: Stacey Chilcoat from the Nashua River Watershed Association

will be helping us learn from wildlife specimens, and the basics of collecting your own!

What's YAC?  The Youth Arts Collaborative is a place for young artists to make, share, and celebrate their work! This Fall, YAC will focus on creating nature journals through exploring the local wildlife around the TPL, in collaboration with guest naturalists from the Nashua River Watershed Association. Learn about native flora/fauna while practicing observational drawing, painting, and mixed media specimen collection.  In these eight weekly afterschool sessions artists can get outside, learn about the connections between art and nature, and create beautiful journals of their own!

Meet at the Library afterschool at 3:50 to walk to Squannacook trails.

Ages: 11+, Register for the first session (Oct. 2) to register for all sessions.

The Burden - Movie and Discussion
10:30 AM - 1:30 PM

The local chapter is of Citizen's Climate Education is hosting a free showing of the film "The Burden"

The_Burden_One_Sheet.jpg

This event is brought to you by: The Citizens' Climate of North Central MA

Image may contain: text

Press Release (see comments below):

“The Burden,” is a documentary about the enormous risks the military faces because of U.S. dependence on fossil fuels and the steps defense leaders are taking to transition to clean energy.

"Until I saw The Burden, I didn't realize that so many of our casualties in war zones happen with military convoys transporting fuel in conflict areas,” said Carolyn Sellars, co-leader of Citizens' Climate of North Central MA. “Generating power from renewable sources like solar would eliminate much of that risk.”
Additionally, the U.S. military is increasingly responding to catastrophes and conflicts that have been exacerbated by climate change. Defense Department reports have referred to climate change as a “threat multiplier,” a situation that will escalate unless we reduce the heat-trapping emissions from fossil fuels that drive climate change.

“As the title of the film implies, the burden of our dependence on oil is costly in both lives and money, and that’s why the military is leading the way on the clean energy transition,” said Sellars.
