Irish Songs and Stories with Kate Chadbourne
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

C:\Users\Kate\Pictures\Harp Aug 2013\sunny smile.JPG

In the spirit of Irish hospitality, all are welcome to attend this

festive, fun, and beautiful celebration of Irish Culture!

Kate Chadbourne is an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard, and a beloved performer at venues throughout New England.

She has been honored as a “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College, and her music has been featured on NPR’s programs, “Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered.”

She has released four solo CD’s, three collections of poetry, and has collaborated on recordings and live performances with Tim Janis, Lauren Passarelli, The Chanticleers, The Celtic Kates, and many others.  Kate’s newest CD is Songs of the Poets, a gathering of beloved poems she set to music for voice, piano, and harp.

Named as one of “The Most Fascinating People” in Central Massachusetts by the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper, Kate is also the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for great-hearted people learning and growing at the crossroads of art and magic.  She brings to her audiences the sounds of the harp, piano, tin whistle, Irish flute, and melodeon, a deep love and knowledge of traditional Irish story, a warm and welcoming presence, and a voice often described as “the voice of an angel.”

James Madison: by Richard Brookhiser

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

Primitive Survival Skills - Modern Survival

Primitive Survival - Modern Tools

Did you know that some ordinary objects you carry with you every day can save your life?!

Come learn how to combine primitive skills with our modern tools!!!
We will talk about survival kits, modern shelter making, and clothing selection.

Don't make the mistake of thinking a survival situation can't happen to you... Be prepared with knowledge and skills!
Please note: this class will be held outside, dress accordingly.

Tim brings his "camp store" to each class and donations are greatly appreciated!

About Tim:

Ever since I can remember, being one with nature has been my passion and my purpose. As a child, I was often found outside looking for bugs, singing to birds, and hanging out in the high branches of trees. I have been learning and practicing primitive skills for over 15 years and have developed a strong desire to share my knowledge with others. This is because I wish to see a world in which humans can live with the natural world in harmony and peace. Come hang out with me for a fun, engaging, and informative experience in the woods! My teaching style accommodates children, teens, and adults because of my playful and light-hearted excitement, along with informative and in depth explanations of the natural world.

Wicked Pissed - New England’s Most Famous Feuds

New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls

and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far! For instance, did you know

that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is

still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era, through early

aviation (CT claims the Wright Bros. are wrong), to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day

food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who’s really “Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why.

Books will be available at the event for purchase and signing.

About the author:

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and

America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition,

he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly

opinion column. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is also the

author of New England Notebook.

Middle Grade Book Club
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

This month we are reading Secrets of Selkie Bay by Shelley Moore Thomas

About the book:

In their present-day tourist trap of an Irish seaside town, famed for its supposed involvement with selkies in the past, three sisters are faced with the sudden disappearance of their mother. Crushed by the loss, their father is struggling to carry on. To make matters worse, there are rumors afloat in the village that their mother herself is a selkie who has now shed her human form and gone back to sea. As Cordie Sullivan, the oldest daughter, tries to learn more about her mother's vanishing, she must find the strength to help her family move ahead, even as she discovers an increasing number of clues that point to a hidden island off the coast—a mythical kingdom of the selkies.

From Shelley Moore Thomas, the author of The Seven Tales of Trinket, a Kirkus Reviews Best Children’s Book of the Year, The Secrets of Selkie Bay is a powerful story about magic, family, grief, and hope.

“Explores grief and loss, as well as the comforting power of stories and belief in magic that can chase away sadness. . . . The fanciful folktales interspersed throughout the novel add plenty of charm.” -Booklist

"Especially endearing are the multitude of little pixie seals that come swimming to the island. . . . Here all elusive threads are woven into a satisfying ending and the recognition that an endangered species has renewed itself near the island." -Children's Literature

Sunday Brunch Book Group - Read Across Europe
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Read Across Europe Book Discussion Group

Join us on Sunday afternnoons this winter - we will have coffee tea and light snacks as we discuss a book written by a popular European author.

This month's pick will be "Dear Mr. M" by Dutch author Herman Koch.

      28186095

The tour-de-force, hair-raising new novel from Herman Koch, New York Times bestselling author of The Dinner and Summer House with Swimming Pool

Once a celebrated writer, M's greatest success came with a suspense novel based on a real-life disappearance. The book was called The Reckoning, and it told the story of Jan Landzaat, a history teacher who went missing one winter after his brief affair with Laura, his stunning pupil. Jan was last seen at the holiday cottage where Laura was staying with her new boyfriend. Upon publication, M.'s novel was a bestseller, one that marked his international breakthrough.  That was years ago, and now M.'s career is almost over as he fades increasingly into obscurity. But not when it comes to his bizarre, seemingly timid neighbor who keeps a close eye on him. Why?

From various perspectives, Herman Koch tells the dark tale of a writer in decline, a teenage couple in love, a missing teacher, and a single book that entwines all of their fates. Thanks to The Reckoning, supposedly a work of fiction, everyone seems to be linked forever, until something unexpected spins the "story" off its rails. With racing tension, sardonic wit, and a world-renowned sharp eye for human failings, Herman Koch once again spares nothing and no one in his gripping new novel, a barbed tour de force suspending readers in the mysterious literary gray space between fact and fiction, promising to keep them awake at night, and justly paranoid in the merciless morning.

About the book:

Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild.

At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.

Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own.

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Remember scouring over the artwork on the cover of your new vinyl LP and hoping the lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve.  Now is your chance to spin some vinyl on the turntable in a group setting and immerse yourself in the music.  The 33 1/2 club at the Townsend Public Library will meet and listen to classic LP's.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Hall of Presidents Book Club: The Last Founding Father: James Monroe by Harlow Giles Unger
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The Last Founding Father: James Monroe and a Nation's Call to Greatness by Harlow Giles Unger
