That's right - every month, book enthusiasts in grades 6-8 are invited to join us and share favorite books, whether they be all-time favorites or recent reads. This is your chance to share what you like reading in a supportive atmosphere and learn about new books... or find other fans of titles you love! EPIC Book Club for middleschoolers typically meets the last Tuesday of each month from 5-6 PM, with some exceptions for holidays.

Fall EPIC Book Club Dates
  • September 28, 5-6 PM
  • October 26, 5-6 PM
  • November 30, 5-6 PM
  • December 21, 5-6 PM
How It Works

Registration opens at the beginning of each month, and is requested for each session. However, drop-ins can sign up at the door. After attendees introduce themselves, we will all get a chance to share a favorite book (or what we are currently reading). You can say a little or a lot. There is no requirement for how you share your book, only that everyone gets a chance to share who wants to.

First time participants will get to make a custom name badge. Returning participants are encouraged to bring theirs! Additionally, all participants will have the option to share their picks on our Teen Picks Blog. There will be light snacks.

Contemporary Book Group
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us via Zoom Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Under a Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan

The passionate and turbulent story of Robert Louis Stevenson and his tempestuous American wife, Fanny.

At the age of thirty-five, Fanny van de Grift Osbourne leaves her philandering husband in San Francisco and sets sail for Belgium to study art, with her three children and a nanny in tow. Not long after her arrival, however, tragedy strikes, and Fanny and her brood repair to a quiet artists' colony in France where she can recuperate. There she meets Robert Louis Stevenson, ten years her junior, who is instantly smitten with the earthy, independent and opinionated belle Americaine.

A woman ahead of her time, Fanny does not immediately take to the young lawyer who longs to devote his life to literature, and who would eventually write such classics as Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In time, though, she succumbs to Stevenson's charms. The two begin a fierce love affair, marked by intense joy and harrowing darkness, which spans decades as they travel the world for the sake of his health. Eventually they settled in Samoa, where Robert Louis Stevenson is buried underneath the epitaph:

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

(Requiem, Robert Louis Stevenson)  (goodreads summary)

Thanksgiving Traditions
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Thursday Night Lecture: VML Cultural Series

Local historian Regina Porter will speak on “Thanksgiving Traditions.” Based on the English secular celebration Harvest Home, Regina will address the roots of our American Thanksgiving Holiday. First as a “Holy Day”, then we travel “over the river and through the woods” examining the role women have played not only in the kitchens but within the walls of the White House. Finally we truss together our story and see how our past has shaped our current traditions of football, turkey and Homecoming.

In her capacity as a Museum Teacher, Regina enjoyed working for the Interpretation and Education Departments at Plimoth Plantation. She is a previous Director at the Historic Winslow House where she currently serves on the Board of Governor’s and oversees their seasonal Public Programs. Not quite a native of Marshfield, she came to live here at age 6, attended our public schools and later studied at Bridgewater State College. Her passion lies in researching and relaying early colonial history with special attention to Marshfield’s history.
