Sing Sinatra!
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
VML Cultural Series - Saturday Concert Broadcast Event  February 23, 2:00 p.m. "Sing Sinatra!"
Celebrate Valentine's Month with Ol' Blue Eyes. Sing along with Sinatra on the big screen through the magic of Qello concerts.
Roses, chocolates, memories!!

First broadcast by NBC on November 24, 1965, "Frank Sinatra: A Man And His Music" was Sinatra's first annual one-hour television special. Singing directly to the camera, Frank Sinatra makes the viewer feel as if he is telling his story directly to them. Often cited as the single finest interpreter of American standards, Sinatra influenced generations of vocalists by focusing on phrasing, and for matching narrative nuance and emotional naturalism with amazing breathing control. Give yourself a treat and come listen, and sing along if you wish, to all your favorites! Sure to be fun for all!! Library and program room are handicapped accessible. Library Plaza entrance will be open on the day for parking on the playground side. All are welcome to bring a rose to the concert to give, and to receive a rose to take home! Light refreshments served.

Please join us Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman

The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman

The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives.

In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions.  From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives.

Contemporary Book Group
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Bastard out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison

Allison's remarkable country voice emerges in a first novel spiked with pungent characters ranging from the slatternly to the grotesque, and saturated with sense of place--Greenville, S.C. Ruth Anne Boatwright, 13, got the nickname Bone at birth, when she was tiny as a knucklebone, and the tag acquires painful derivatives, like ``Bonehead.'' While her mother, Annie, a waitress, tries vainly to get the word ``illegitimate'' scrubbed from Bone's birth certificate, her tobacco-spitting granny reminds her she's a bastard. The identity of her real father, whom granny drove away, is kept from her. Surrounded by loving aunts and uncles, Bone still endures ridicule (she's homely, she has no voice for gospel singing) and--from vicious Daddy Glen, her mother's new husband--beatings and sexual abuse. Bone takes refuge in petty crime, like breaking into Woolworth's, and finds her truest friend in unmarried Aunt Raylene, who once had a great love for another woman. Annie gently defends Daddy Glen, blaming her daughter, until the tale's inevitably brutal climax. Mental and physical cruelty to women forms a main theme, illuminated by the subplot of pathetic albino Shannon Pearls, her story rife with Southern gothic overtones. Allison, author of the well-received short story collection Trash , doesn't condescend to her ``white trash'' characters; she portrays them with understanding and love.

West African Kora Harp Concert
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Saturday Concert  Saturday, April 13 , 2:00 p.m. "West African Kora Harp." Performed by Sean Gaskell.

The West African kora is a 21 string harp that is native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years, although some of the music comes from the middle 13th century around the founding of the Mandinka empire. The performer has studied with master kora players Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh from the Gambia over the course of multiple visits. An adult program typically lasts 60 minutes and usually consists of 6-7  songs. Between songs, he talks about the kora, how it is built, how he was introduced to it, who typically plays it, what its cultural significance is, and what it was like to live in the Gambia while he studied. Free and open to the public; no tickets required. Light refreshments served.Funded by Friends of the Ventress Memorial Library  Visit http://www.seangaskell.com
