2019 Kick-Off Concert: Blues, Ballads, and Bebop

2019 Kick-off Concert,  “Blues, Ballads and Bebop.”  Performed by The Bloom/Funkhouser Duo.

Free and open to public; no tickets. Library Plaza door will be open. Light refreshments served at a post-concert social hour.

The stellar jazz duo of Peter H. Bloom, flute, and John Funkhouser, piano, will perform an exuberant show of Blues, Ballads and Bebop – a captivating mix of beguiling ballads, high-energy blues, and sizzling bebop numbers, by great tunesmiths like Hoagy Carmichael, George Shearing, Mercer Ellington, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, and others. Peter and John have performed together for more than 20 years, winning praise for their stellar musicianship and entertaining concerts. Both are veterans of the legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (46th season).  Peter Bloom has shared the stage with jazz luminaries Charles Neville, Geri Allen, Sheila Jordan, Jaki Byard and others.  Praised for “amazing versatility” (Arts Fuse) and “hip, jazzy flute work” (AllAboutJazz), Bloom performs in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia, and appears on 45 CDs. John Funkhouser has appeared with notables like Luciana Souza, Tierney Sutton, Ran Blake, Herb Pomeroy, Laszlo Gardony, Stan Strickland, and piano savant Matt Savage.  He has performed at Birdland, Blue Note, Dizzy’s in New York, the Kennedy Center, and other top venues from Kansas City and New Orleans to Paris, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He teaches at Berklee College of Music.

Yeongdo, Korea 1911. In a small fishing village on the banks of the East Sea, a club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a fifteen-year-old girl. The couple have one child, their beloved daughter Sunja. When Sunja falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But then Isak, a Christian minister, offers her a chance of salvation: a new life in Japan as his wife.

Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country in which she has no friends, no home, and whose language she cannot speak, Sunja’s salvation is just the beginning of her story.

Through eight decades and four generations, Pachinko is an epic tale of family, identity, love, death and survival.

Please join us Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman

The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman

The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives.

In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions.  From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives.

Please join us Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Bastard out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison

Allison's remarkable country voice emerges in a first novel spiked with pungent characters ranging from the slatternly to the grotesque, and saturated with sense of place--Greenville, S.C. Ruth Anne Boatwright, 13, got the nickname Bone at birth, when she was tiny as a knucklebone, and the tag acquires painful derivatives, like ``Bonehead.'' While her mother, Annie, a waitress, tries vainly to get the word ``illegitimate'' scrubbed from Bone's birth certificate, her tobacco-spitting granny reminds her she's a bastard. The identity of her real father, whom granny drove away, is kept from her. Surrounded by loving aunts and uncles, Bone still endures ridicule (she's homely, she has no voice for gospel singing) and--from vicious Daddy Glen, her mother's new husband--beatings and sexual abuse. Bone takes refuge in petty crime, like breaking into Woolworth's, and finds her truest friend in unmarried Aunt Raylene, who once had a great love for another woman. Annie gently defends Daddy Glen, blaming her daughter, until the tale's inevitably brutal climax. Mental and physical cruelty to women forms a main theme, illuminated by the subplot of pathetic albino Shannon Pearls, her story rife with Southern gothic overtones. Allison, author of the well-received short story collection Trash , doesn't condescend to her ``white trash'' characters; she portrays them with understanding and love.

VML Classic Book Group
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

The Ventress Memorial Library in Marshfield  hosts an ongoing book discussion group that seeks to delve into classic literature and find fresh insights while considering modern-day perspectives. We read only the classics or "soon-to-be" classics!  We usually meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 4:30-6, but sometimes vary our meeting dates/times for special book group events (movie potlucks, holiday party). Sign up in advance to reserve a seat, or just come on the day to listen. The group is free and open to the public. New members are always welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Contact Assistant Director Chris Woods for more information and if you need a copy of the book. We look forward to welcoming you!
