Children's Room Browsing Appointment

Children's Room browsing appointments will be twenty minutes long, and are for ONE family at a time. You must register for a time slot. All members of your family except for children under two years old must be wearing a mask. If any member of your family can not wear a mask for any reason, we ask that they do not join you in the Children's Room for your browsing appointment - we will be happy to offer you curbside pickup of your books instead. Please note that for the time being there will be no toys, puzzles, coloring, or computer available for patron use. Children's room staff will be available to assist and will be present for your entire appointment. If you are interested in a longer appointment, you may book two in a row, if they are available at time of booking. Please call or email to cancel a browsing appointment.

Your children’s browsing appointment guarantees your time in the children’s room only. If you wish to browse the main library as well, please check at the greeter desk again, as we are only allowing twenty five patrons at a time in the main library.

Fierce Females: Women in Art
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, May 15th from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. for a Zoom presentation on "Fierce Females: Women in Art", featuring guest speaker Jane Oneail.  Women have long been the subject of art, often depicted as nothing more than objects of desire. How do images of women change when women become the creators? This program examines the history of women in art in brief and then explores the lives, careers and works of several major women artists from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt.

Bio:

Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England.  Jane holds a master’s degree in Art History from Boston University and a M.Ed. from Harvard University.  A New Hampshire native, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator.  Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University.

Advance Registration is Required.  A Zoom link will be sent to participants 24 hours prior to the event.

Contemporary Book Group
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us via Zoom Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?”

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place. Breeding Season Backyard Birds
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, June 19 from 2 - 3:00 p.m. for "Breeding Season Backyard Birds."  In this Zoom presentation, Steve Hale follows an interactive, bird-quiz format that enables the audience to test their own knowledge and ask their own on-line follow-up questions. This is an engaging and interactive presentation featuring common and not-so-common breeding season birds common to any backyard in New England.  This presentation offers ID tips, including learning a few birds by their song.  Tips on feeding birds to attract the most diversity are also provided.   Advance registration is required.  A zoom link will be sent to all registrants 24 hours prior to the program.

Bio:

Steve Hale, holds university degrees in marine biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology.  He has lived in New Hampshire over 20 years and has explored most of the state.  An avid hiker, birder, and experienced naturalist, Steve loves to share his experience and knowledge with others. In the mid-1990s, Steve moved to NH from Baton Rouge, LA and worked as a bird observer in the White Mountain National Forest.  This experience honed his skills for birding by ear. Steve converted this experience into a doctoral dissertation at the University of New Hampshire, where he studied the habitat associations of the endemic Bicknell's Thrush using satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems.  The project was also Steve's introduction to the world of hiking in the Whites.  Steve hikes and backpacks over 200 miles every year and has observed many wonderful things.
