Homegrown String Band - Diversity Day
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Saturday Concert *  October 5, 2019, 2:00 p.m. (doors open at 1:45 p.m.)  *Homegrown String Band" performs acoustic American roots music in concert. Celebrate "National Diversity Day" with library book displays and children's activities along with Marshfield Democratic Town Committee! Bring the family to join in the fun. Be part of all the "Explore Marshfield" weekend events!

The Homegrown String Band brings an American folk tradition into the twenty-first century; a family of musicians collaborating in organic fashion with a unique repertoire of original and traditional music inspired by the classic sounds of rural America. Comprised of husband and wife plus daughter, this dynamic trio utilizes an eclectic palette of instruments including guitar, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo ukulele, baritone ukulele, harmonica, jaw harp, and doumbek to add their own musical DNA to an American tradition.

The Homegrown String Band will take you on a musical journey from ancient ballads of the British Isles to blues and bluegrass of the twentieth century. We will also celebrate National Diversity Day, a day to reflect on and learn about different cultures and ideologies. Children's games will begin at 3 p.m. for post-concert fun! Free and open to the public of all ages; no tickets required. Library Plaza Program Room is handicapped accessible. 1837 Ocean St. entrance open for parking near playground. Light refreshments served at concert social hour.  This event is supported in part by a grant from the Marshfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Join author, nature enthusiast and inspirational speaker Courtney Schaad as she details her journey on the Appalachian Trail. Her book chronicles a  modern pilgrimage of passages through the heights and depths of solitude and companionship. The Appalachian Trail thru-hike is a journey into the soul as much as through the mountains. In this collection of vignettes and reflections on life through the eyes of a contemplative hiker, the sky overhead represents the limitless opportunities of life held in mysterious tension with the path of one's choices. The walk is a daily reminder of our interconnectedness to the created and uncreated realm*and the chance to see the wordless stories the world around us can tell. Free; no tickets required. Cost is $5 payable in advance by calling COA at 781-834-5581  or at the door

The book tells the story of the two one-hundred-year-old mysteries surrounding the sinking, and details the tragic story of the Steamer Portland lost in the Thanksgiving gale in 1898, with all hands. The Portland Gale is known locally as the storm that changed the course of the North River, separating Humarock from the rest of Scituate. Cost $5 @ The Ventress Library Plaza Program Room. 1837 Ocean Street entrance will be open for parking on the playground side. History of S.S. Pierce
7:30 AM

History of S.S. Pierce and Company with Anthony Sammarco on Monday, December 9 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

$5 payable in advance by calling the COA at 781-834-5581 or at the door

When Samuel Stillman Pierce opened his store in 1831 at the corner of Tremont and Court Streets in downtown Boston, he vowed "I may not make money for the next five years, but I shall make a reputation." Pierce went on to become well known as the purveyor of fancy goods and potent libations to Victorian Bostonians as well as providing provisions to the ships that sailed from Boston Harbor. Bartering with ship captains, often exchanging his provisions for the delicacies that were brought to Boston from faraway ports, his renowned store catered to the carriage trade and the company he founded would be run by four generations of the Pierce Family in its immensely successful operations. With its own coat of arms adorning a distinctive red label on canned goods with the motto “Puritas et Cura,” and the largest line of privately packed fancy foods in the world, S.S. Pierce & Company sold its wide assortment of delicacies not only at eight New England stores of its own but also through distributors across the United States and worldwide by mail order. In his upcoming book “S.S. Pierce: A Boston Tradition”, Anthony M. Sammarco will recount the memories of the past and bring together the shared tradition of how Bostonians reveled in the gourmet foods, fine wines and potent libations of a once stalwart business. After a century and a half, S.S. Pierce & Company was sold in 1967 to Laird Corporation and since 1986 has been a part of Kraft Foods Group, Inc. Cost $5 @ The Ventress Library Plaza Program Room. 1837 Ocean Street entrance will be open for parking near the playground side. Part of "Opportunities" Lifelong Learning, a joing venture of the Marshfield COA and Ventress Memorial Library.  Visit https://www.facebook.com/AnthonyMSammarco/

VML Classic Book Group
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

The Ventress Memorial Library in Marshfield  hosts an ongoing book discussion group that seeks to delve into classic literature and find fresh insights while considering modern-day perspectives. We read only the classics or "soon-to-be" classics!  We usually meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 4:30-6, but sometimes vary our meeting dates/times for special book group events (movie potlucks, holiday party). Sign up in advance to reserve a seat, or just come on the day to listen. The group is free and open to the public. New members are always welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Contact Assistant Director Chris Woods for more information and if you need a copy of the book. We look forward to welcoming you!
