7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us via Zoom Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Apeirogon by Colum McCann

                                                                                     Olive Again

Colum McCann's most ambitious work to date, Apeirogon--named for a shape with a countably infinite number of sides--is a tour de force concerning friendship, love, loss, and belonging. Bassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their daily lives, from the roads they are allowed to drive on, to the schools their daughters, Abir and Smadar, each attend, to the checkpoints, both physical and emotional, they must negotiate. Their worlds shift irreparably after ten-year-old Abir is killed by a rubber bullet and thirteen-year-old Smadar becomes the victim of suicide bombers. When Bassam and Rami learn of each other's stories, they recognize the loss that connects them and they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace.

McCann crafts Apeirogon out of a universe of fictional and nonfictional material. He crosses centuries and continents, stitching together time, art, history, nature, and politics in a tale both heartbreaking and hopeful. Musical, cinematic, muscular, delicate, and soaring, Apeirogon is a novel for our time. (goodreads review)

Community Read & Discussion - Hey Kiddo - Teens Ages 12-17
5:30 PM - 6:15 PM

*Teen Book Discussion. Register here if you are age 12-17. If you are an adult, please register for the discussion at 6:30 PM.*

Join us as we explore themes of family, addiction, art, and personal growth through a community read of this award-winning graphic memoir, Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett Krosoczka. Two virtual discussions will be held on Monday, December 7: 5:30 PM for teens and 6:30 PM for adults. Before the discussion takes place, sign up for the Beanstack Challenge to watch exclusive interviews with the author and more.

"In kindergarten, Jarrett's teacher asks him to draw his family, but Jarrett's family is complicated. His mom is an addict, and Jarrett doesn't even know the name of his father. So Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people. Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his life as normal as possible and finding a way to express himself through drawing. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father. Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive." -adapted from Google Books

You can check out copies of the book at the library during our in-person hours or via curbside pickup - call the library during open hours at 781-834-5535 to reserve a copy today! A select number of e-books and audiobooks are also available on Overdrive and Hoopla. The Boys and Girls Club also has copies of the books available.
