Community Read & Discussion - Hey Kiddo - Teens Ages 12-17
5:30 PM - 6:15 PM

*Teen Book Discussion. Register here if you are age 12-17. If you are an adult, please register for the discussion at 6:30 PM.*

Join us as we explore themes of family, addiction, art, and personal growth through a community read of this award-winning graphic memoir, Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett Krosoczka. Two virtual discussions will be held on Monday, December 7: 5:30 PM for teens and 6:30 PM for adults. Before the discussion takes place, sign up for the Beanstack Challenge to watch exclusive interviews with the author and more.

"In kindergarten, Jarrett's teacher asks him to draw his family, but Jarrett's family is complicated. His mom is an addict, and Jarrett doesn't even know the name of his father. So Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people. Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his life as normal as possible and finding a way to express himself through drawing. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father. Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive." -adapted from Google Books

You can check out copies of the book at the library during our in-person hours or via curbside pickup - call the library during open hours at 781-834-5535 to reserve a copy today! A select number of e-books and audiobooks are also available on Overdrive and Hoopla. The Boys and Girls Club also has copies of the books available.

Contemporary Book Group
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us via Zoom Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing When All Is Said by Anne Griffin

                                                                                     When All Is Said

A tale of a single night. The story of a lifetime.

If you had to pick five people to sum up your life, who would they be? If you were to raise a glass to each of them, what would you say? And what would you learn about yourself, when all is said and done?
This is the story of Maurice Hannigan, who, over the course of a Saturday night in June, orders five different drinks at the Rainford House Hotel. With each he toasts a person vital to him: his doomed older brother, his troubled sister-in-law, his daughter of fifteen minutes, his son far off in America, and his late, lamented wife. And through these people, the ones who left him behind, he tells the story of his own life, with all its regrets and feuds, loves and triumphs.

Beautifully written, powerfully felt, When All Is Said promises to be the next great Irish novel. . (goodreads review)

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us via Zoom Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson.

                                                                                     When All Is Said

In 1936, tucked deep into the woods of Troublesome Creek, KY, lives blue-skinned 19-year-old Cussy Carter, the last living female of the rare Blue People ancestry.

The lonely young Appalachian woman joins the historical Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and becomes a librarian, riding across slippery creek beds and up treacherous mountains on her faithful mule to deliver books and other reading material to the impoverished hill people of Eastern Kentucky.

Along her dangerous route, Cussy, known to the mountain folk as Bluet, confronts those suspicious of her damselfly-blue skin and the government's new book program. She befriends hardscrabble and complex fellow Kentuckians, and is fiercely determined to bring comfort and joy, instill literacy, and give to those who have nothing, a bookly respite, a fleeting retreat to faraway lands.
