Reading Together - Rainbow Weaver with Author Visit
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Rainbow Weaver by Linda Elovitz Marshall with author visit. For grade K-3 with parents/caregivers.

Ixchel, a Mayan girl in Guatemala, wants to weave like her mother, grandmother, and most Mayan women have done for more than two thousand years. She also wants to help pay for her school and books. As Ixchel walks around her village, she finds it littered with colorful plastic bags, so Ixchel has an idea! She collects and washes the plastic bags, cuts each bag into thin strips, and weaves the plastic strips into a colorful fabric that looks like a beautiful rainbow while she helps to clean up the environment. Children in grades K-3 with caregivers are invited to join the discussion as we read Rainbow Weaver by local author, Linda Marshall, who will be joining us. Ms. Marshall - whose book was inspired by the talented Mayan people and Mayan Hands, fair trade handmade gifts from Guatemala - will delight us with a reading, Q & A, and a simple art project modeled after weavings created by Mayan Hands. Each family will receive a copy of the book through the generosity of the Friends. Please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk. For grades K-3 with caregiver.
