Thrivers: Parent Book Discussion and Workshop with author, Michele Borba
8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Thrivers

Join nationally recognized teacher, author, and educational consultant, Dr. Michele Borba, as we read and discuss her new book, Thrivers. Have you ever wondered why some thrive while others may not? According to Dr. Borba, thrivers are different. They flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Why? Dr. Borba combed scientific studies on resilience, spoke to dozens of researchers/experts in the field, and interviewed more than 100 young people from all walks of life, and she found something surprising: the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down not to grades or test scores, but to seven character traits that set Thrivers apart. These thriver traits--confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism-- allow kids to roll with the punches and succeed in life and can be taught to children at any age. In Thrivers, Dr. Borba offers practical, actionable ways to develop these traits in children from preschool through high school, showing how to teach kids how to cope today so they can thrive tomorrow! For parents of all ages, educators, and anyone interested in learning more.  Registration required. Hardcover books will be available for purchase for $5.00 or can be borrowed through the library system’s print and digital collections. Arrangements will be made for those who register to pick up the book.  The Zoom link will be emailed to registrants prior to the meeting date. To learn more about Dr. Borba, visit her website at https://www.micheleborba.com/

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This program is funded by the Friends of the Library. A limited number of copies will be available in print for $5.00. There will also be library copies available as well as digital formats. Please Register

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it's the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she's twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she's pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend. The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

Becoming.  by Michelle Obama

Becoming by [Michelle Obama]In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same. (Amazon)

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

This program is funded by the Friends of the Library. A limited number of copies will be available in print for $5.00. There will also be library copies available as well as digital formats. Please Register.

The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Ten years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins. As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise"
