How to Talk so Little Kids Will Listen: Parent Book Discussion with Julie King
9:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Family Book DiscussionIt's one thing to read the book, and it's another to put the tools and strategies into practice with your actual children. Bring all your "But what about when...?" and "What can I do if..." questions to an evening with co-author Julie King, nationally recognized parent expert and speaker. No question is too weird, silly or small or you can just come and listen and get inspired by other parents' questions (and relieved to know you're not the only one!). Part of the discussion will highlight the unusual challenges of parenting during the pandemic. The later start time was selected especially for parents of young children so that you can put your little ones to bed to be able to fully participate uninterrupted in the discussion.

Registrants will receive a copy of the book to read prior to the discussion. Please register so that we can make sure that you receive a copy of the book. Arrangements will be made for pick-up. For parents of children 18 months - 7.5 years.

The Zoom link will be sent to registrants a few days before the session.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant--and that her lover is married--she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters--strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis--survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

The Gift of Failure: Parent Book Discussion and Workshop with author, Jessica Lahey
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey

Modern parenting is often defined by an unprecedented level of overprotectiveness: parents who rush to school at the whim of a phone call to deliver forgotten assignments, who challenge teachers on report card disappointments, mastermind children’s friendships, and interfere on the playing field. As teacher and writer Jessica Lahey explains, even though these parents see themselves as being highly responsive to their children’s well being, they aren’t giving them the chance to experience failure or the opportunity to learn to solve their own problems, which is the key to growth and becoming the best person you can be.

Join us for a live Zoom session with nationally recognized author, teacher, and speaker, Jesica Lahey. Registrants will receive a copy of the book to read prior to the discussion. Please regsiter so that we can make sure that you receive a copy of the book. Arrangements will be made for pick-up. For parents of children ages 0-17.

The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation by Rich Cohen

Albert Hicks was a feared, shadowy figure of the New York underworld in the mid-1800s. Handsome and charismatic, he was known to frequent the dive bars and gin joints of the Five Points, the most dangerous neighborhood in maritime Manhattan. For years, he operated out of the public eye, rambling from crime to crime, working on the water, in ships, sleeping in the nickel-a-night flops, drinking in barrooms where rat-baiting and bear-baiting were great entertainments.

Long fascinated by gangster legends, Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure for the first time, from his humble origins to his incarnation as a demon who terrorized the Five Points and became the gangster most feared by other gangsters, at a time when pirates anchored off of 14th street.   Please register to receive the GoToMeeting virtual meeting link.

Limited copies of the book are available compliments of the Friends of the Library . Library copies will also be available for checkout and downloadable ebook and audiobook versions are on Overdrive.

One Day in December by Josie Silver
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic... and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be. What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness
