Family Book Discussion with Potluck Dinner: Moon Lecture and Author Visit
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Team Moon: How 400,000 People Landed Apollo 11 on the Moon by Catherine Thimmesh

This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! Dr. Valerie Rapson, Astrophysicist and Astronomer from MiSci, will be presenting an exciting talk about the moon. In addition, we are excited to have award-winning author, Catherine Thimmesh, visit us virtually via Skype! She will be joining us after the potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. For students entering grades 5-9 w/caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book.

Team Moon offers a rare perspective on a story we only thought we knew. Apollo 11, the first moon landing, is a story that belongs to many, not just the few and famous. It belongs to the seamstress who put together twenty-two layers of fabric for each space suit, to the engineers who created a special heat shield to protect the capsule during its fiery reentry, to the flight directors, camera designers, software experts, suit testers, telescope crew, aerospace technicians, photo developers, engineers, and navigators. Gathering direct quotes from some of these folks who worked behind the scenes, Thimmesh reveals their very human worries and concerns. Culling NASA transcripts, national archives, and stunning NASA photos from Apollo 11, she captures not only the sheer magnitude of this feat but also the dedication, ingenuity, and perseverance of the greatest team ever that worked to first put man on that great gray rock in the sky.

Nonfiction Book Discussion*
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In 1955, white men in the Mississippi Delta lynched a fourteen-year-old from Chicago named Emmett Till. His murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional. Only weeks later, Rosa Parks thought about young Emmett as she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Five years later, Black students who called themselves “the Emmett Till generation” launched sit-in campaigns that turned the struggle for civil rights into a mass movement. Till’s lynching became the most notorious hate crime in American history.

Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Family Book Discussion: The Night Diary
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Please join us to discuss the Newbery Honor-winning book for middle grade readers, The Night Diary. We are excited to host the author, Veera Hiranandani who will visit us via Skype to tell us more about her book.  For grades 5-8 with a caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book.

The Night Diary tells the story of Nisha and Amil, twins who are half Hindu, half Muslim who are trying to make sense of their place in a country literally divided during the India Partition in 1947. The British rule over India is ending, and political leaders have decided that the country will be divided in two: India for the Hindus and a new country -- Pakistan -- for the Muslims. Unfortunately, Nisha and Amil's home is in the new country, but their father is Hindu, so they must leave everything they've ever known. Nisha writes about the dangerous journey in her diary every night.

Neglected by her mother, Gloria, who won’t allow her to have a dog, C.J. is going through some tough times. Molly’s job is to stay hidden in C.J.’s room, cuddle up to her at night, and protect her from bad people. And no matter what Gloria does to separate them, nothing will keep Molly away from the girl that she loves. The Library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families.
