Family Book Discussion with Potluck and Author Skype Visit
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart

In all the ways that matter, Mark is a normal kid. He's got a dog named Beau and a best friend, Jessie. He likes to take photos and write haiku poems in his notebook. He dreams of climbing a mountain one day. But in one important way, Mark is not like other kids at all. Mark is sick. The kind of sick that means hospitals and treatments. The kind of sick some people never get better from. So Mark runs away. He leaves home with his camera, his notebook, his dog, and a plan to reach the top of Mount Rainier even if it's the last thing he ever does. The Honest Truth is a rare and extraordinary novel about big questions, small moments, and one incredible journey.

The evening will begin with a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided by the Library. We are excited that the author will join us via Skype at 6:45! Join other families for an exciting evening of food and discussion.  For children grades 4-8 with parent or caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk.

Healthy You, Healthy Earth
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Maia Boswell-Penc, Ph.D.

Daily, we witness Planet Earth growing increasingly warm and increasingly foreign to us. Interspersed with erratic weather patterns, raging forest fires, stultifying drought, violent hurricanes, melting glaciers and flooding, acidifying oceans, we feel the plight of environmental refugees, roaming seas of people fleeing unspeakable upheaval. We sense the suffering of myriad animals teetering at the brink of extinction and we know in our bones that waning biodiversity and the 6th  mass extinction portend growing dis-ease. Many of us feel anxious, depressed, or caught, unsure what we, as individual, can do. Bringing together research about climate change with research about physical & mental health and well-being, this talk offers a doorway into a win/win solution

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Duo Tim O'Shea with Pádraig Timoney Irish Folk Music will present a variety of Irish songs and tunes on guitar, vocal, fiddle and Irish Drum (Bodhrán).

TIM O’SHEA is from Killarney in the south west of Ireland.  He has worked as a professional musician and producer for over twenty five years, solo, in duos and in several bands, since the 1980’s. Pádraig Timoney is a singer, guitarist and fiddle player from Dublin. Currently is based in Saratoga County in Upstate New York. Amina's Voice by Hena Khan

Amina has never been comfortable in the spotlight. She is happy just hanging out with her best friend, Soojin. Now that she’s in middle school, everything feels different. Soojin is suddenly hanging out with Emily, one of the “cool” girls, and even talking about changing her name to something more “American.” Does Amina need to start changing, too, or hiding who she is to fit in? While Amina grapples with these questions, she is devastated when her local mosque is vandalized. This is a poignant book about a Pakistani-American Muslim girl who struggles to stay true to her family’s vibrant culture while simultaneously blending in at school after tragedy strikes her community. The Library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 4 -5, please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book.

Remember the Holocaust - An Evening with Teacher/Author Matthew Rozell
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

A Train Near Magdeburg: A Teacher’s Journey into the Holocaust and the Reuniting of the Survivors and Liberators, 70 Years On

Maybe you've seen the photograph before. It has been used by Holocaust museums and memorials all over the world, in books, magazines, and documentaries. It’s all over social media platforms.  But no one ever saw it publicly until Matthew Rozell sat down to interview the World War II veterans who were present when it was taken. They were there. They saw what happened. And they acted in the middle of a shooting war. More importantly, Rozell has chronicled the whole story behind what it really means and helped to reunite the soldiers with the people that they saved six decades after that fateful spring morning in 1945.

Award-winning teacher and historian, Matthew Rozell will give a presentation about the extraordinary story behind an iconic 1945 photograph, which records the whole incredible story about Holocaust survivors left to die on a train in Nazi Germany and the America soldiers that liberated them.

Matthew Rozell is an award-winning history teacher, author, speaker and blogger on the topic of the most cataclysmic events in the history of mankind including World War II and the Holocaust. Mr. Rozell has been featured as the “ABC World News Person of the Week” and has had his work as a teacher filmed for the CBS Evening News, NBC Learn, the Israeli Broadcast Authority, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the New York State United Teachers.

Matthew Rozell’s books will be available for purchase and signing. For more on Matthew Rozell, visit his web site at www.matthewrozell.com .

Trouble the Water by Frances O'Roark Dowell

11-year-old Callie is fearless, stubborn, and a little nosy, so when she sees an old dog wandering around town, she’s going to figure out who he belongs to. When her sleuthing leads her to cross paths with a white boy named Wendell who wants to help, the segregated town doesn’t take too kindly to their budding friendship. Meanwhile, a nearly invisible boy named Jim is stuck in a cabin in the woods. He’s lost his dog, but can’t remember exactly when. When his companion, a little boy named Thomas, who’s been invisible much longer than he, explains that they are ghosts, the two must figure out why they can’t seem to cross the river to the other side.  Trouble the Water is a story that spans lifetimes, showing that history never truly disappears, and that the past will haunt us until we step up to change the present and stand together for what is right.

Nonfiction Book Discussion*
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

At stake is nothing less than who we are, and what we will become. There have been monopolists in the past but today's corporate giants have far more nefarious aims. They’re monopolists who want access to every facet of our identities and influence over every corner of our decision-making. Until now few have grasped the sheer scale of the threat. Foer explains not just the looming existential crisis but the imperative of resistance.

Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Nonfiction Book Discussion*
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In 1955, white men in the Mississippi Delta lynched a fourteen-year-old from Chicago named Emmett Till. His murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional. Only weeks later, Rosa Parks thought about young Emmett as she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Five years later, Black students who called themselves “the Emmett Till generation” launched sit-in campaigns that turned the struggle for civil rights into a mass movement. Till’s lynching became the most notorious hate crime in American history.

Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.
