Family Book Discussion with Author Skype Visit
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Saving Marty by Paul Griffin.

Eleven-year-old Lorenzo Ventura knows heroes are rare—like his father, who died in the war, or his friend Paloma Lee, who fearlessly pursues her dream of being a famous musician. Renzo would never describe himself as a hero, but his chance comes when he adopts Marty, a runt piglet.
Marty is extraordinary—he thinks he’s a dog and acts like one too—and his bond with Renzo is truly one of a kind. At first, the family farm seems like the perfect home for Marty, but as he approaches 350 pounds, it becomes harder for Renzo to convince his mom that a giant pig makes a good pet. So when Marty causes a dangerous (and expensive) accident, Renzo knows Marty’s time is up. He’d do anything and everything for his best friend, but will everything be enough to save Marty?

The evening will begin with a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided by the Library. We are excited that the author will join us via Skype at 6:30! Join other families for an exciting evening of food and discussion.  For children grades 4-8 with parent or caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk.

In Code Name: Lise, Larry Loftis paints a portrait of true courage, patriotism, and love—of two incredibly heroic people who endured unimaginable horrors and degradations. He seamlessly weaves together the touching romance between Odette and Peter and the thrilling cat and mouse game between them and Sergeant Bleicher. With this amazing testament to the human spirit, Loftis proves once again that he is adept at writing “nonfiction that reads like a page-turning novel” (Parade).  Please register at the Information Desk.

The Friendship War by Andrew Clements.

Grace and Ellie have been best friends since second grade. Ellie's always right in the center of everything--and Grace is usually happy to be Ellie's sidekick. But what happens when everything changes? This time it's Grace who suddenly has everyone's attention when she accidentally starts a new fad at school. It's a fad that has first her class, then her grade, and then the entire school collecting and trading and even fighting over . . . buttons?! A fad that might also get her in major trouble and could even be the end of Grace and Ellie's friendship. Because Ellie's not used to being one-upped by anybody. There's only one thing for Grace to do. With the help of Hank--the biggest button collector in the sixth grade--she will have to figure out a way to end the fad once and for all. But once a fad starts, can it be stopped?

The Library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 4 -5, please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book.

Talk &Taste Cookbook Club

Talk & Taste Cookbook Club

Calling all Foodies!  This month, we will talk and taste our way through Cook Like a Pro by Ina Garten.  Get the book, try out the recipes, and (best part!) bring a dish for everyone to sample on discussion night. A limited number of books are available to purchase for $5 or you can check out a library copy.  Registration required.

Cook Like a Pro by Ina Garten

Beginner and advanced cooks alike will love Ina's delectable recipes, and if you have questions along the way, don't worry--Ina's practical cooking advice talks you through every detail, as though she were right there by your side. With beautiful photos and a treasury of pro tips that span prepping, making, and serving, as Ina says, "You don't have to be a pro to cook like one!”

Thanks to the Friends of the Library for subsidizing book purchases for this program.

*This book choice is a change from the one listed on some Talk&Taste early printed bookmarks.  We decided that the Official Downton Abbey Cookbook, while beautiful and definitely worth a read, was not an ideal choice for our discussion.

Fiction Book Discussion
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The fiction book discussion group meets each month to carefully analyze the current selection in a warm and welcoming setting. To join one or all monthly meetings, paperback copies of the book are available at the reference desk for $5, or you can borrow a library copy. This program is funded by the Friends of the Library.

Varina by Charles Frazier:

Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions.

The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.”

Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.

Peer Led Family Book Discussion with Author Skype Visit & Pizza Dinner
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

Eighth graders, Marleigh Delisle and Julia Kito with the help of their parents will facilitate a peer-led family book discussion of one of their special book selections, the widely popular and award-winning Because of Mr. Terupt. It’s the start of a new year at Snow Hill School, and seven students, with different backgrounds and situations, find themselves thrown together in Mr. Terupt’s fifth grade class. They don’t have much in common and they’ve never gotten along, not until an extraordinary new teacher arrives and helps them to find strength inside themselves and in each other. But when Mr. Terupt suffers a terrible accident, will his students be able to remember the lessons he taught them or will their lives go back to the way they were before fifth grade and before Mr. Terupt? These seven students are about to have their lives changed by one amazing teacher! The evening will begin with a pizza dinner (pizza, salad, beverages and dessert provided by the Library). The author will join us via Skype at 6:30! Join Marleigh and Julia for an exciting evening of food and discussion.  For grades 4-8 with parent/caregiver.  Please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk.

Varina by Charles Frazier: Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions. The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.” Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.

Parent Book Discussion of Disconnected: How to Reconnect Our Digitally Distracted Kids
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Disconnected: How to Reconnect Our Digitally Distracted Kids by Dr. Thomas Kersting

We see it everywhere – kids connected to hand held devices and disconnected from the real world around them. According to the latest research, the average 13-year-old spends 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, glued to a screen! Most troubling, all this screen time is having deleterious effects on their physical, social, and mental health. As a parent, are you concerned about what your child is experiencing in the virtual world? Are you battling with setting screen limits? Is your child showing signs of screen addictive behavior? Are you alarmed by the impact electronic devices have on children’s brains? Are you looking for tips and solutions to this pervasive problem?

In his well-researched book, and with his years of experience working with adolescents, psychotherapist, school counselor, and nationally recognized expert, Dr. Thomas Kersting, provides simple strategies to help reduce screen-time so that you can reconnect with your kids.

Gail Brown will facilitate a parent book discussion of Disconnected: How to Reconnect Our Digitally Distracted Kids. Parents will have the opportunity to openly share their thoughts, reflections, and personal struggles as they reflect on what they learned from reading the book and in preparation for Dr. Kersting’s in-person parent/child workshop on April 30.

For parents/caregivers of children grades 4 and up. Books are provided by the library. Please register and pick up a copy of the book. Please register.

Digitally Distracted with Dr. Thomas Kersting
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Digitally Distracted with Dr. Thomas Kersting at the Voorheesville Central School District’s Lydia C. Tobler Performing Arts Center

We see it everywhere: at the park, in restaurants, and inside our homes and cars – children and teens connected to handheld devices and disconnected from the real world around them. According to the latest research, the average 13-year-old spends 8 hours per day, 7 days a week, glued to a screen. This is problematic, but for every problem, there is a solution.

Join Dr. Thomas Kersting, psychotherapist, nationally recognized speaker, author, and school counselor for an interactive workshop where he will explore the research about the device-dependent world our children live in and how it is affecting their physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. According to this research, there is a war going on for the attention of our children, but it is not too late to make the necessary positive changes. Dr. Kersting will provide strategies for families to work together to reduce screen time and reset their digital diet in order to reconnect.

For adults, professionals, parents of any age child, and for students in grades 5 and up with their parent/caregiver.

This program is made possible by the generous contributions from the Voorheesville Public Library through “Bullet Aid” from Senator George Amedore, Voorheesville Friends of the Library, Voorheesville PTA, and St. Matthew’s Church.
