Read It Forward!

For the sixth year, we’ll be releasing free books into the community.  This year’s selection is Miles Morales: Spider-Man by Jason Reynolds. Miles Morales is just your average teenager. Dinner every Sunday with his parents, chilling out playing old-school video games with his best friend, Ganke, crushing on brainy, beautiful poet Alicia. He's even got a scholarship spot at the prestigious Brooklyn Visions Academy. Oh yeah, and he's Spider Man.

If you get a copy, read it, comment on it, and pass it on to another teen – there are no due dates or late fees. Respond to a brief online survey for a chance to win a prize pack.  Details are inside the paperbacks. If you need help passing a copy forward, drop it off at the Library. You can also read the title on one of the YA eReaders or request a library copy. Grades 6 and up.

Nonfiction Book Discussion*
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

At stake is nothing less than who we are, and what we will become. There have been monopolists in the past but today's corporate giants have far more nefarious aims. They’re monopolists who want access to every facet of our identities and influence over every corner of our decision-making. Until now few have grasped the sheer scale of the threat. Foer explains not just the looming existential crisis but the imperative of resistance.

Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Family Book Discussion with Potluck Dinner: Moon Lecture and Author Visit
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Team Moon: How 400,000 People Landed Apollo 11 on the Moon by Catherine Thimmesh

This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! Dr. Valerie Rapson, Astrophysicist and Astronomer from MiSci, will be presenting an exciting talk about the moon. In addition, we are excited to have award-winning author, Catherine Thimmesh, visit us virtually via Skype! She will be joining us after the potluck dinner. A local student will be bringing in her telescope to share her love of astronomy. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. For students entering grades 5-9 w/caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book.

Team Moon offers a rare perspective on a story we only thought we knew. Apollo 11, the first moon landing, is a story that belongs to many, not just the few and famous. It belongs to the seamstress who put together twenty-two layers of fabric for each space suit, to the engineers who created a special heat shield to protect the capsule during its fiery reentry, to the flight directors, camera designers, software experts, suit testers, telescope crew, aerospace technicians, photo developers, engineers, and navigators. Gathering direct quotes from some of these folks who worked behind the scenes, Thimmesh reveals their very human worries and concerns. Culling NASA transcripts, national archives, and stunning NASA photos from Apollo 11, she captures not only the sheer magnitude of this feat but also the dedication, ingenuity, and perseverance of the greatest team ever that worked to first put man on that great gray rock in the sky.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In 1955, white men in the Mississippi Delta lynched a fourteen-year-old from Chicago named Emmett Till. His murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional. Only weeks later, Rosa Parks thought about young Emmett as she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Five years later, Black students who called themselves “the Emmett Till generation” launched sit-in campaigns that turned the struggle for civil rights into a mass movement. Till’s lynching became the most notorious hate crime in American history.

Varina by Charles Frazier:

Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions.

The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.”

Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.
