Tween Book Bunch: Guts
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Meet up online with Mrs. Sternklar and some of your friends to discuss the newest graphic novel memoir by Raina Telgemeier, Guts. Pick up an emoji craft kit from the library and assemble it while we chat! Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach, it's probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she's dealing with the usual highs and lows: friends, not-friends, and classmates who think the school year is just one long gross-out session. It soon becomes clear that Raina's tummy trouble isn't going away... and it coincides with her worries about food, school, and changing friendships. What's going on?

Fairy Gardens & Fairy Houses
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Make a Fairy Garden or Fairy HouseHave you ever wanted to design and create your own fairy house or fairy garden? A Fairy Garden is a miniature garden complete with tiny living spaces, interesting objects, including those from the natural world, structures, and perhaps some actual living plants.

Local artist and teacher, Megan Viscio, who is a talented miniature artist, will be offering a video recorded lesson about how to create your own fairy house to put in a fairy garden scene. Those who register will receive a bag of special items, including a dish or tray as a base, to use in creating a fairy house and garden all your own! You can also use materials that you have at home or in your backyard. These Take & Make Bags can be picked up at the library during operating hours starting July 10th.

How do you imagine your fairy garden? Something scary, whimsical, silly, or fun? What story does your fairy scene tell onlookers?

Megan's instructional video will be posted to the library's YouTube channel on 7/10. The link will be posted here on the calendar as well.

https://www.youtube.com/user/VoorheesvilleLibrary

We want you to show off your creativity! Take a photo of your fairy house/fairy garden and send it to Gail Brown at gail.brown@voorpl.org . These photos will be made into a virtual art show that will be posted on our website and YouTube channel. The deadline for photo submission is July 31.

It is hoped that we can have some of these masterpieces temporarily displayed along the rail trail. More details about this to follow.

For grade 2 - adult. Please register no later than July 3rd, so that your special bag can be ready for you!

Nighttime Nursery Rhyme & Fairytale Musical Storytime
6:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Nightime Nursery Rhyme & Fairytale Musical StorytimeEarly childhood music educator, Lisa Russo, from Miss Lisa's Musikids, has always been a favorite visiting presenter at the Voorheesville Public Library!

Wear your pajamas and join Miss Lisa and Mrs. Brown for a musical celebration of nursery rhymes and fairytales. We will sing, dance, and shake out the stresses of the day.

Here are some items that you will need from home: something to shake, two things to tap (using both hands...food storage containers work well, as do hard-cover books and empty coffee cans), something to roll between hands (markers, paper towel roll, water bottle...), and something to use as a scarf.  These items are easily found in our everyday items and, if you can't find them all, do not worry!

Please register. For children ages 18 months-5 years with caregivers. This will be an engaging Zoom virtual session. The link will be sent prior to the class to those who register.

Family Book Discussion with Virtual Author Visit
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Family Book Discussion of the book, Becuase of Mr. TeruptBecause of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

Join us for an evening of great conversation of the widely popular and award-winning Because of Mr. Terupt. It’s the start of a new year at Snow Hill School, and seven students, with different backgrounds and situations, find themselves thrown together in Mr. Terupt’s fifth grade class. They don’t have much in common and they’ve never gotten along, not until an extraordinary new teacher arrives and helps them to find strength inside themselves and in each other. But when Mr. Terupt suffers a terrible accident, will his students be able to remember the lessons he taught them or will their lives go back to the way they were before fifth grade and before Mr. Terupt? These seven students are about to have their lives changed by one amazing teacher!  The author will be joining us via Go to Meeting! For grades 4-9 with parent/caregiver.

Paperback copies can be picked up at the library (please email Gail Brown) or digital books or audiobooks can be downloaded through the library's Overdrive.

The book discussion will be held via Go to Meeting. A Go to Meeting participation link will be emailed before the event to those who register.

Parent Book Discussion
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Parent Book Discussion Groups Discusses: Under PressureUnder Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls by Lisa Damour, Ph.D.

Are you concerned about stress and anxiety in your daughter? Though anxiety has risen among young people overall, studies confirm that it has skyrocketed in girls. Research finds that the number of girls who said that they often felt nervous, worried, or fearful jumped 55% from 2009 to 2014, while the comparable number for adolescent boys has remained unchanged. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with girls, Lisa Damour, Ph.D., has witnessed this rising tide of stress and anxiety in her own research, in private practice, and in the all-girls’ school where she consults.

Join us for a virtual book discussion of Dr. Damour's NY Times best-selling research-based book. This discussion will be facilitated by Diane Blinn, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Adolescent Specialist, who has 30 years experience working as a social worker in a local high school.

Paperback copies can be picked up at the library (please email Gail Brown) or digital books or audiobooks can be downloaded through the library's Overdrive. Extra copies have been ordered for the digital collection.

The book discussion will be held via Go to Meeting. A Go to Meeting participation link will be emailed before the event to those who register.

Nonfiction Book Discussion

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

Date / Time:

Monday Sep 14, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson

A remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror. Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Talk&Taste Cookbook Club
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Calling all Foodies!  This month, we will talk and taste our way through Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon.  Get the book, try out the recipes, and (best part!) bring a dish for everyone to sample on discussion night. Books are available to purchase for $5 or you can check out a library copy.  Registration required.

Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits

Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said that a combination of beauty and strength made southern women “whiskey in a teacup.” We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside we’re strong and fiery.  Reese loves sharing Dorothea’s most delicious recipes as well as her favorite southern traditions, from midnight barn parties to backyard bridal showers, magical Christmas mornings to rollicking honky-tonks. It’s easy to bring a little bit of Reese’s world into your home, no matter where you live. After all, there’s a southern side to every place in the world, right?

Thanks to the Friends of the Library for subsidizing book purchases for this program.

Date / Time:

Monday Nov 9, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation by Rich Cohen

Albert Hicks was a feared, shadowy figure of the New York underworld in the mid-1800s. Handsome and charismatic, he was known to frequent the dive bars and gin joints of the Five Points, the most dangerous neighborhood in maritime Manhattan. For years, he operated out of the public eye, rambling from crime to crime, working on the water, in ships, sleeping in the nickel-a-night flops, drinking in barrooms where rat-baiting and bear-baiting were great entertainments.

Long fascinated by gangster legends, Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure for the first time, from his humble origins to his incarnation as a demon who terrorized the Five Points and became the gangster most feared by other gangsters, at a time when pirates anchored off of 14th street.   Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.
