Date / Time:

Monday Jan 13, 2020

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.   Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle, Nonfiction Kindle Fire and Overdrive.  Large print and Audiobook versions may also available for checkout.

Family Book Discussion with Author Skype Visit
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Saving Marty by Paul Griffin.

Eleven-year-old Lorenzo Ventura knows heroes are rare—like his father, who died in the war, or his friend Paloma Lee, who fearlessly pursues her dream of being a famous musician. Renzo would never describe himself as a hero, but his chance comes when he adopts Marty, a runt piglet.
Marty is extraordinary—he thinks he’s a dog and acts like one too—and his bond with Renzo is truly one of a kind. At first, the family farm seems like the perfect home for Marty, but as he approaches 350 pounds, it becomes harder for Renzo to convince his mom that a giant pig makes a good pet. So when Marty causes a dangerous (and expensive) accident, Renzo knows Marty’s time is up. He’d do anything and everything for his best friend, but will everything be enough to save Marty?

The evening will begin with a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided by the Library. We are excited that the author will join us via Skype at 6:30! Join other families for an exciting evening of food and discussion.  For children grades 4-8 with parent or caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk.

Thumbnail Code Name Lise: The Story of the Woman who Became WWII's Most Highly Decorated Spy by Larry Loftis

In Code Name: Lise, Larry Loftis paints a portrait of true courage, patriotism, and love—of two incredibly heroic people who endured unimaginable horrors and degradations. He seamlessly weaves together the touching romance between Odette and Peter and the thrilling cat and mouse game between them and Sergeant Bleicher. With this amazing testament to the human spirit, Loftis proves once again that he is adept at writing “nonfiction that reads like a page-turning novel” (Parade).  Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

The Friendship War by Andrew Clements.

Grace and Ellie have been best friends since second grade. Ellie's always right in the center of everything--and Grace is usually happy to be Ellie's sidekick. But what happens when everything changes? This time it's Grace who suddenly has everyone's attention when she accidentally starts a new fad at school. It's a fad that has first her class, then her grade, and then the entire school collecting and trading and even fighting over . . . buttons?! A fad that might also get her in major trouble and could even be the end of Grace and Ellie's friendship. Because Ellie's not used to being one-upped by anybody. There's only one thing for Grace to do. With the help of Hank--the biggest button collector in the sixth grade--she will have to figure out a way to end the fad once and for all. But once a fad starts, can it be stopped?

The Library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 4 -5, please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book.

Fiction Book Discussion
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The fiction book discussion group meets each month to carefully analyze the current selection in a warm and welcoming setting. To join one or all monthly meetings, paperback copies of the book are available at the reference desk for $5, or you can borrow a library copy. This program is funded by the Friends of the Library.

Varina by Charles Frazier:

Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions.

The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.”

Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.
