Fairy Gardens & Fairy Houses
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Have you ever wanted to design and create your own fairy house or fairy garden? A Fairy Garden is a miniature garden complete with tiny living spaces, interesting objects, including those from the natural world, structures, and perhaps some actual living plants.

Local artist and teacher, Megan Viscio, who is a talented miniature artist, will be offering a video recorded lesson about how to create your own fairy house to put in a fairy garden scene. Those who register will receive a bag of special items, including a dish or tray as a base, to use in creating a fairy house and garden all your own! You can also use materials that you have at home or in your backyard. These Take & Make Bags can be picked up at the library during operating hours starting July 10th.

How do you imagine your fairy garden? Something scary, whimsical, silly, or fun? What story does your fairy scene tell onlookers?

Megan's instructional video will be posted to the library's YouTube channel on 7/10. The link will be posted here on the calendar as well.

https://www.youtube.com/user/VoorheesvilleLibrary

We want you to show off your creativity! Take a photo of your fairy house/fairy garden and send it to Gail Brown at gail.brown@voorpl.org . These photos will be made into a virtual art show that will be posted on our website and YouTube channel. The deadline for photo submission is July 31.

It is hoped that we can have some of these masterpieces temporarily displayed along the rail trail. More details about this to follow.

For grade 2 - adult. Please register no later than July 3rd, so that your special bag can be ready for you!

The Magic Years Parenting Workshop
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

The Magic Years is a four-part, researched-based parent education program for parents/caregivers of children from birth – 4-years-old. Topics include strategies on how to manage parent and child stress, understand the stages of child development, and how to best support these stages. We will discuss how to set up (or better manage) routines surrounding bedtime, bathing, family meals and toilet training. We will also better understand parenting styles, and learn strategies for positive discipline tools that really work. Join us to discuss parenting strategies that are positive, supportive, and provide you with valuable information on best practices for you and your children. This program will also include resources and information relevant to the potential impact of COVID-19 on parenting and children.

The sessions will be conducted by Maria Delucia-Evans, an educator from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County. Parents/caregivers may attend one, two, three, or all four of the workshop sessions. Participants who attend all four sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

These virtual sessions will be held via Zoom and are for parents/caregivers of children ages 0-4. Your little ones are welcome to attend (virtually) if childcare is a concern. Please regsiter for each session you would like to attend. A Zoom meeting link will be emailed to those who register prior to each session.

Date / Time:

Monday Sep 14, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson

A remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror. Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Talk&Taste Cookbook Club
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Calling all Foodies!  This month, we will talk and taste our way through Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon.  Get the book, try out the recipes, and (best part!) bring a dish for everyone to sample on discussion night. Books are available to purchase for $5 or you can check out a library copy.  Registration required.

Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits

Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said that a combination of beauty and strength made southern women “whiskey in a teacup.” We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside we’re strong and fiery.  Reese loves sharing Dorothea’s most delicious recipes as well as her favorite southern traditions, from midnight barn parties to backyard bridal showers, magical Christmas mornings to rollicking honky-tonks. It’s easy to bring a little bit of Reese’s world into your home, no matter where you live. After all, there’s a southern side to every place in the world, right?

Thanks to the Friends of the Library for subsidizing book purchases for this program.

Date / Time:

Monday Nov 9, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation by Rich Cohen

Albert Hicks was a feared, shadowy figure of the New York underworld in the mid-1800s. Handsome and charismatic, he was known to frequent the dive bars and gin joints of the Five Points, the most dangerous neighborhood in maritime Manhattan. For years, he operated out of the public eye, rambling from crime to crime, working on the water, in ships, sleeping in the nickel-a-night flops, drinking in barrooms where rat-baiting and bear-baiting were great entertainments.

Long fascinated by gangster legends, Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure for the first time, from his humble origins to his incarnation as a demon who terrorized the Five Points and became the gangster most feared by other gangsters, at a time when pirates anchored off of 14th street.   Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.
