Wells Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Wells Public Library Board of Trustees is composed of nine officials elected by the residents of Wells. The Board serves as the governing body of the library for the public to whom the library belongs. As such the Board is delegated both legal and practical responsibilities which deal with the operation of the library. These delegated duties are a public trust. It is the obligation of each Trustee, therefore, to know the library, its basic mission, its strengths, and needs, and to plan for the library’s future. The Board’s single purpose, as advocates of the library, is to meet the needs of the community. Their meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm via Zoom. Please email Cindy at cappleby@wellstown.org for your invitation to the meeting.

The Involuntary American
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

In the winter of 1650–51, one hundred fifty ragged and hungry Scottish prisoners of war arrived at Massachusetts Bay Colony, where they were sold as indentured laborers for 20 to 30 pounds each. Among them was Thomas Doughty, a common foot soldier who had survived the Battle of Dunbar, a forced marched of 100 miles without food or water, imprisonment in Durham Cathedral, and a difficult Atlantic crossing. An ordinary individual who experienced extraordinary events, Doughty was among some 420 Scottish soldiers who were captured during the War of the Three Kingdoms, transported to America, and sold between 1650 and 1651. Their experiences offer a fresh perspective on seventeenth-century life.
The Involuntary American: A Scottish Prisoner’s Journey to the New World by Carol Gardner describes Doughty’s life as a soldier, prisoner of war, exile, servant, lumberman, miller, and ultimately free landowner. The Involuntary American demonstrates how even individuals of humble circumstances were swept into the maelstrom of the First Global Age. It expands our understanding of immigration to the colonies, colonial servitude, the linkages and tensions between Europe, Massachusetts Bay, and America’s northeastern frontier, and of New England society in the early colonial period.  Join us on Zoom as Dr. Gardner discusses the life of Thomas Doughty and the prisoner's journey in early New England history.  Email Stefanie Claydon at sclaydon@wellstown.org to register and to receive a Zoom invitation.

Wishful Reading - Afternoon Bookclub
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Introducing Wishful Reading, a new fiction bookgroup that will meet on third Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 pm

The first book discussion will be on January 19th at 2:00 pm and we will be reading
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. By the time she's twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

Email Stefanie at sclaydon@wellstown.org for your Zoom invitation.

Tea in Jane Austen's Time
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Jane Austen Tea was an important part of the English (and American) way of life in the early 19th century.  Jane Austen famously was a huge fan of tea and used the pagentry of the tea service as the glue that tied many of her characters and stories together.  Joining us is Marianne Russo of Nellie's Tea Company in Portland, ME, a tea specialist, to discuss the kinds of tea available to the casual drinker in the time of Jane Austen.  So put on your fanciest hat and grab a cuppa because, as Jane once wrote, "But indeed, I would rather have nothing but tea."
