3D Printer Orientation at Central
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Learn the basics of 3d printing, including how to prepare a 3D design file for printing, as well as how to properly and safely use the 3D printer to print your own 3D object. Patrons must attend an orientation workshop before using the 3D printer.
 
To get the most out of this workshop, registrants should already be comfortable with basic computer functions, like browsing the internet, and downloading files. 

Participants must be in grade 7 or older and have a Whitby Public Library card in good standing to attend this workshop and use the 3D printer.

Youth in grades 7-12 are invited to join us on the third Wednesday of every month as we get creative at the Rossland Branch. This month, we will be making unique votive holders using our favourite quotes and photos. Keep them for yourself, or give as a gift. All supplies will be provided, but you are welcome to bring small photographs to personalize your craft. Registration is required. The Whitby Public Library is looking for members for its Teen Advisory Group (TAG). As a TAG member, you will be able to have a say about what goes on at your library, assist with special events and programs, develop leadership skills, and earn community service hours. Join us this month for a fun holiday social, and to learn about what TAG has planned in 2018.

Interested youth in grades 7-12 are encouraged to attend a TAG meeting to see what it’s all about. The Brooklin TAG meets on the fourth Friday of every month (September through May).

Knit'B'Cause at Central

Knit'B'Cause is an intergenerational knitting program for children in grades 3-8. We teach the basics - how to cast on, how to knit, how to purl and how to cast off - while making items for various charity groups. We have made red scarves for AIDS, comfort dolls for an international aid organization and lap blankets for seniors, among other items. If you are in grades 3-8 and are interested in joining, please email ask@whitbylibrary.ca, providing your contact information, grade and name. The wool is provided but participants are expected to bring their own pair of 6mm needles.

The John Howard Society of Durham Region has partnered with the Whitby Public Library to provide personalized 1:1 employment services. Individualized job search or retention related programing can support and assist you on your path to successful employment. We can help with resume development, interview skills and job searching techniques.

This is a drop-in program and there is no need to register, just drop by between 1-5 p.m. for assistance. Help will be available on the first floor of the library behind the information desk.

The Whitby Public Library is looking for members for its Teen Advisory Group (TAG). As a TAG member, you will be able to have a say about what goes on at your library, assist with special events and programs, develop leadership skills, and earn community service hours. 

Interested youth in grades 7-12 are encouraged to attend a TAG meeting to see what it’s all about. TAG meets on the second Wednesday of every month (September through May). No registration required.

Drop-in Employment Help with John Howard Society

The John Howard Society of Durham Region has partnered with the Whitby Public Library to provide personalized 1:1 employment services. Individualized job search or retention related programing can support and assist you on your path to successful employment. We can help with resume development, interview skills and job searching techniques.

This is a drop-in program and there is no need to register, just drop by between 1-5 p.m. for assistance. Help will be available on the first floor of the library behind the information desk.

Online registration begins today for the winter session of Reading Buddies. Reading Buddies is a program for children in grades 1-3, who require reading assistance. We match the younger children on a one-to-one basis with teen volunteers, who help them practice their reading and play literacy-based games with them. Children are expected to attend all 8 dates in their session, barring illness. The winter session runs from February 6/7, 2018 until April 3/4, 2018, with one week off at March Break.

The Durham Infant Hearing Screening Clinic is hosted by the Tri-Regional Infant Hearing Program in partnership with the Whitby Public Library. If your child is under three months of age and has not had a hearing screening, please book one online or call 1-888-703-5437 x4 to speak to the booking clerk.

Toddler Time at Brooklin

Toddler Time is a fun-filled half hour with active songs, stories and felt boards for children 19 months - 35 months of age and their caregivers.

The session begins the week of January 15th until the week of February 20th.

Storytimes are designed to meet your child's developmental stage. Please ensure your child is the required age at the time of registration.
Because of space restrictions you may only register for one storytime program.

Registration for this program begins on Wednesday, January 10 at 10:00 a.m.

French Reading Buddies/Copains de lecture at Central Session A

French Reading Buddies/Copains de Lecture is a program for children in grades 2 and 3 enrolled in a French language or French immersion school who require additional reading support. Bienvenue copains! Joignez-nous pour pratiquer votre lecture en français.

Children meet weekly on a one-to-one basis with a teen volunteer to practice their French reading and also play literacy-based games. This 8 week program begins February 8th, 2018 and ends April 5th with one week off at March Break.

 

At Central:  Two 40 minute sessions every Thursday Session A  4:00-4:40pm and Session B  4:50-5:30pm. 

Registration for French Reading Buddies begins online on Saturday, February 3rd at 9:00 a.m.  Click on the session you prefer (in blue), fill out the form and submit.  You may only register your child for one session.

English Conversation Circle at Central

Do you want to practice your English language skills? We can help! Conversation Circles give Newcomers an opportunity to practice their English conversation skills in a welcoming environment and to learn about Canadian culture, with the help of volunteers from the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD).  Participants from all over the world, with a variety of language abilities, come together to discuss topics, have questions answered, share stories, learn about library resources, and so much more!

The Whitby Central Library Evening Fiction Book Club meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7 pm in the Children's Program Room.

There will be a copy of each month's selection available for the first 12 registrants. Waitlisted registrants who have read the book are welcome to attend the meeting.

This workshop will cover the basic functions of tinkercad.com, a free web-based 3D design platform. Learn the tools and navigation necessary to get started designing your own 3D creations, printable on the Library’s 3D printer.

This is a fast-paced workshop. To get the most out of this workshop, participants should have very strong basic computer skills.
