A Nation's Founding from an Indigenous Perspective

"A Nation's Founding from an Indigenous Perspective"
SmokeSygnals Steven Peters' virtual talk about the exhibit "Our" Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History

History is often portrayed as having clean lines - absolute start and end dates, clear sides of good and bad, and a line of civility and savagery. When it comes to the foundation of this country, history books tend to focus on the Mayflower arrival in 1620 and the Harvest Festival that came to be known as Thanksgiving in 1621. The myths that have surrounded these events have shaped the world that we know, but the actual events were far different. What became the beginning of one people also marked the tragic downfall of another. We will explore these events and the events that preceded them to gain a better understanding of our shared history and how the clean lines in the history books avoided a far blurrier past.
